Coral diseases are characterized by microbial community shifts in coral mucus and tissue, but causes and consequences of these changes are vaguely understood due to the complexity and dynamics of coral-associated bacteria. We used 16S rRNA gene microarrays to assay differences in bacterial assemblages of healthy and diseased colonies displaying White Plague Disease (WPD) signs from two closely related Caribbean coral species, Orbicella faveolata and Orbicella franksi. Analysis of differentially abundant operational taxonomic units (OTUs) revealed strong differences between healthy and diseased

In June, 2002, the government of Dominica requested assistance in evaluating the coral culture and transplantation activities being undertaken by Oceanographic Institute of Dominica (OID), a coral farm culturing both western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific corals for restoration and commercial sales. We assessed the culture facilities of OID, the condition of reefs, potential impacts of coral collection and benefits of coral transplantation. Coral reefs (9 reefs, 3-20 m depth) were characterized by 35 species of scleractinian corals and a live coral cover of 8-35%. Early colonizing, brooders such as

BACKGROUND: Palytoxin is most commonly reported after ingestion of seafood. We report a case of palytoxin poisoning from dermal absorption with local toxicity from zoanthid coral in a patient with intact skin.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old previously healthy woman handled a zoanthid coral from a home aquarium without any barrier protection. The patient manifested neurologic symptoms of perioral paresthesia and dysguesia. In addition, there was local dermatologic toxicity that persisted for several days. The patient was treated supportively with corticosteroids and a histamine antagonist.

The discharge of nutrients, phytoplankton and pathogenic bacteria through ballast water may threaten the Cayo Arcas reef system. To assess this threat, the quality of ballast water and presence of coral reef pathogenic bacteria in 30 oil tankers loaded at the PEMEX Cayo Arcas crude oil terminal were determined. The water transported in the ships originated from coastal, oceanic or riverine regions. Statistical associations among quality parameters and bacteria were tested using redundancy analysis (RDA). In contrast with coastal or oceanic water, the riverine water had high concentrations of c

The surface mucopolysaccharide layer (SML) secreted by corals is a rich environment where bacteria live and proliferate, with population levels often being several orders of magnitude higher than in the surrounding waters (at least for culturable microbes). Some studies have suggested that these communities play an important role in energy and nutrient flux in marine environments. We hypothesize that the microbial community structure of the SML also plays a role in protection against disease. This hypothesis is based on studies that have shown differences in the bacterial composition of the mu

Corals perform simultaneous mass spawning around the full moon. Most Acropora species release gamete bundles, which are a complex of eggs and sperm, into the seawater. Then, gamete bundles are separated into eggs and sperm. Eggs are fertilized when sperm and eggs come in contact with each other. However, it is still unclear how sperm meet the eggs of the same species in the presence of many eggs of different species and how eggs guard against the fertilization attempts by sperm of different species. In this study, we observed that A. digitifera, A. gemmifera and A. tenuis sperm showed motility

At the beginning of 1996 coral reefs in Morrocoy National Park, Venezuela, suffered an unprecedented mass mortality event. As a consequence, live coral cover dropped to 2-10%. One of the few reefs that kept live coral cover over 35% was Cayo Sombrero; nonetheless, the presence of some coral diseases has been detected within the past 2 years, representing a new source of coral mortality. Due to this situation, this study started a monitoring program on the incidence of coral diseases and syndromes in the reef of Cayo Sombrero. The CARICOMP protocol was used in order to evaluate reef health. Ten

Reef-building coral polyps contain multiple specialized tissue types with distinct functions, from feeding and defense to symbiosis and skeleton formation. While these cell types have been characterized microscopically and more recently via single-cell RNA sequencing, spatially resolved high-throughput gene expression profiling remains limited in corals. Here we combine Laser Capture Microdissection with RNA sequencing to characterize tissue-specific gene expression in the reef building coral Pocillopora acuta. Oral tissues, adjacent to the seawater, exhibited 1,253 upregulated genes enriched

While conventional synthetic antifouling agents (AFs) threaten coral reef ecosystems, the environmental safety profiles of naturally-derived AFs remain inadequately studied. To this end, a synthetic AF Cu2O, and 7 naturally-derived ones (7-Amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC), butenolide, ε-polylysine (EPL), camptothecin (CPT), eugenol, gramine, and BAF-1) were chosen for a comparative study to reveal the physiological responses of coral Montipora capricornis. The selected AF concentration was 50 μg/L, referenced from Cu2O bleaching-inducing concentration. After 15 days, Cu2O demonstrated the most sub

Guided by molecular networking, HSQC-based DeepSAT, and SMART analyses, a chemical investigation of the coral-derived fungus Talaromyces sp. TJ403-AL05 led to the isolation and identification of taladipyrones A-I (1-9), a series of new α-pyrone dimers with four distinct skeletons. Among these, compounds 1 and 9 represented two unprecedented classes of rearranged α-pyrone dimers, and compounds 5-7 were the first talarolactone-type dimers obtained as racemates. Extensive spectroscopic analysis, quantum chemical calculations, and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to determine their structures,

Human activities in tropical watersheds are increasing rates of terrestrial silt and clay deposition to nearshore environments and negatively impacting coral reef ecosystems. We sampled sediment flux across a range of coral reef environments in the US Virgin Islands, Caribbean Sea using standard sediment traps and evaluated the relationship of sediment particle size and quality (organic, carbonate, terrigenous) on coral health. We found high variability in rates of sediment deposition that corresponded temporally to storm and swell events. However, this was driven spatially by distinctions bet

Marine litter (ML), predominantly plastic, threatens oceanic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning globally. However, limited knowledge exists about its impact on India's coastal areas, particularly the Lakshadweep Islands, the nation's sole coral atolls. Within this frame of reference, the present study comprehensively investigated the distribution, abundance, typology, and ecological risks associated with ML across 28 beaches and three lagoon reef stations on Kavaratti Island. A total of 32,710 litter items, divided into 11 categories, were found with an average litter density of 0.82 ± 0.8

The coral-dinoflagellate photosymbiosis and coral calcification underpin shallow water, coral reef ecosystems. This review examines the pivotal role of pH regulation in the cell physiology of these processes. Despite simple tissue organization, photosymbiotic corals maintain a complex internal microenvironment, with distinct compartments exhibiting contrasting pH levels. For example, the acidic 'symbiosome' surrounds the algal symbionts, while the alkaline 'extracellular calcifying medium' occurs at the growing front of the skeleton. We discuss how pH regulation of these compartments is crucia

BACKGROUND: Larval propagation and seeding of scleractinian corals for restoration is a rapidly expanding field, with demonstrated applications to assist the recovery of declining populations on reefs. The process typically involves collecting coral reproductive material, facilitating in vitro fertilization (IVF), and settling and outplanting the resulting coral offspring. Optimizing IVF can reduce gamete wastage and increase larval yields for propagation, therefore improving the efficiency of this intervention.
METHODS: In this study we tested three IVF conditions in four Caribbean broadcast

Coral reef ecosystems face escalating threats from anthropogenic global climate challenges, leading to frequent bleaching events. A key issue in coral transplantation is the inability of fragments to rapidly grow to sizes that can resist environmental pressures. The observation of accelerated growth during the early stages of coral regeneration provides new insights for addressing this challenge. To investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms, we study the fast-growing stony coral Acropora muricata. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing, and high-resolution micro-computed t

Climate change poses an existential threat to coral reefs. A warmer and more acidic ocean weakens coral ecosystems and increases the intensity of hurricanes. The wind-wave-current interactions during a hurricane deeply change the ocean circulation patterns and hence potentially affect the dispersal of coral larvae and coral disease agents. Here, we modeled the impact of major hurricane Irma (September 2017) on coral larval and stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) connectivity in Florida's Coral Reef. We coupled high-resolution coastal ocean circulation and wave models to simulate the disper

Complex reef structure, built via calcium carbonate production by stony corals and other calcifying taxa, supports key ecosystem services. However, the decline in coral cover on reefs of the Florida Reef Tract (US), caused by ocean warming, disease, and other stressors, has led to erosion exceeding accretion, causing net loss of reef framework. Active coral restoration, aimed at rapidly increasing coral cover, is essential for recovering reef structure and function. Traditionally, restoration success focused on the survivorship and growth of transplanted corals. This is the first empirical stu

The chemical investigation of the South China Sea soft coral Sinularia densa has resulted in the isolation of seven new terpenoids, including two new meroterpenoids, namely sinudenoids F-G (1-2), and five new cembranes, namely sinudenoids H-L (3-7). Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated based on extensive analyses of spectroscopic data, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, comparison with the literature data, and quantum chemical calculations. Among them, sinudenoid F (1) and sinudenoid G (2) are rare meroterpenoids featuring a methyl benzoate core. Sinudenoid H (3) possess

Reef-building corals create one of the most biodiverse and economically important ecosystems on the planet. Unfortunately, global coral reef ecosystems experience threats from numerous natural stressors, which are amplified by human activities. One such threat is ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun; a genotoxic stressor that is a double-edged sword for corals as they rely on sunlight for energy. More intense UVR has been shown to have greater direct impacts on animal physiology, and these may be exacerbated by co-occurring stressors. The aim of this systematic literature review was to exa

Reef-building corals thrive in oligotrophic environments due to their possession of endosymbiotic algae. Confined to the low pH interior of the symbiosome within the cell, the algal symbiont provides the coral host with photosynthetically fixed carbon. However, it remains unknown how carbon is released from the algal symbiont for uptake by the host. Here we show, using cultured symbiotic dinoflagellate, Breviolum sp., that decreases in pH directly accelerates the release of monosaccharides, that is, glucose and galactose, into the ambient environment. Under low pH conditions, the cell surface
