Determinants of low fifth minute Apgar score among newborns delivered by cesarean section at Wolaita Sodo University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Southern Ethiopia: an unmatched case control study.

BACKGROUND: Apgar score is used to evaluate the neonates' overall status and response to resuscitation, as well as its prognosis beyond the neonatal period. Low fifth minute Apgar scores is more frequent and is associated with markedly increased risks of neonatal mortality and morbidity. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of birth asphyxia is high (22.52%). Birth asphyxia contributes to significant neonatal morbidities and mortalities due to severe hypoxic-ischemic multi-organ damage, mainly brain damage. Therefore, this study was aimed to identify determinants of low fifth minute Apgar score among n

Serious adverse neonatal outcomes such as 5-minute Apgar score of zero and seizures or severe neurologic dysfunction are increased in planned home births after cesarean delivery.

The United States is with 37,451 home births in 2014 the country with the largest absolute number of home births among all developed countries. The purpose of this study was to examine the occurrence and risks of a 5-minute Apgar score of zero and neonatal seizures or serious neurologic dysfunction in women with a history of prior cesarean delivery for planned home vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), compared to hospital VBAC and hospital birth cesarean deliveries for term normal weight infants in the United States from 2007-2014. We report in this study outcomes of women who had one or more

Admission cardiotocography versus intermittent auscultation of fetal heart rate: effects on neonatal Apgar score, on the rate of caesarean sections and on the rate of instrumental delivery--a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to determine whether intrapartum admission cardiotocography (CTG) in women at low obstetric risk can improve neonatal outcome (in terms of Apgar score) and whether it is associated with an increase in the incidence of instrumental delivery and caesarean section. REVIEW METHODS: The Cochrane Library, Medline (1966-November 2005), Embase (1980-November 2005) and the PubMed were searched for randomized control trials and systematic reviews of randomized control trials. Studies were assessed for quality. Outcomes considered the neonatal Apgar score at 5 min a

Fetal erythropoietin levels in growth-restricted and appropriately grown neonates with and without abnormal fetal heart rate tracings: a comparison with cord blood gases and Apgar scores.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if umbilical cord plasma erythropoietin (EPO) levels in combination with cord blood gases and Apgar scores can distinguish between subacute and chronic uteroplacental insufficiency. METHODS: A total of 184 neonates delivered between 1993 and 1997 at Tampa General Hospital were studied. Cord plasma EPO levels, cord blood gases, and Apgar scores were determined prospectively and compared in four subgroups that were defined based on the presence or absence of fetal growth restriction (FGR; chronic fetal hypoxia), abnormal fetal heart rate tracings during labor (FHR; subac

The relationship of the umbilical artery half peak systolic velocity deceleration time with postpartum APGAR scores and umbilical cord blood pH in pregnancy with fetal growth restriction.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the correlation between neonatal reactions and umbilical artery half peak systolic velocity deceleration time (UA HPSVDT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the research, participants were selected among 24-40 weeks pregnant women. While the study group consisted of those with fetal growth restriction (FGR), the control group included the rest. To determine UA HPSVDT and certain Doppler parameters, Doppler ultrasonography was used and within a week before delivery, the middle cerebral artery (MCA Doppler was obtained). Likewise, a peri-operatively taken blood sa

The Surgical Apgar Score and frailty as outcome predictors in short- and long-term evaluation of fit and frail older patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy - a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Frailty increases the risk of poor surgical outcomes in the older population. Some intraoperative factors may also influence the final result and can be evaluated. The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is a simple system predicting postoperative mortality and morbidity. However, the utility of the SAS remains unknown in fit and frail older patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy due to benign gallbladder diseases. AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of the SAS in predicting 30-day morbidity and 1-year mortality in older fit and frail patients undergoing elective laparosco

Evaluation of the fetal assessment score in pregnancies at risk for intrauterine hypoxia.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to define the diagnostic value of a new fetal assessment score that is based on each of the components of the Apgar score. STUDY DESIGN: A fetal assessment score was established to study the main fetal vital functions: (1) cardiovascular (heart rate, color of the skin in the Apgar score), now based on fetal heart rate patterns and Doppler assessment of fetal blood flow redistribution, (2) fetal respiratory (quality of breathing in the Apgar score), now based on Doppler assessment of uteroplacental perfusion, and (3) neuromuscular function (tone and reflexes in the A

[The apgar value of the newborn and its prognostic value for the course of the neonatal period].

The prognostic value of the postnatal Apgar-score to the course of the neonatal period. It is impossible to determine exactly vital functions of the infant postnatal sole with a number. However we are the opinion, that Apgar-score is valid for the first clinical classification of the neonate. We studied 6780 newborn from 6 large towns of the GDR. Two thirds of the cases were selected with risk. The Apgar-score from 1 minute postnatal was correlated to findings of clinical investigation, diagnostic and therapy during the neonatal period from 2 hours postnatal to 8 days. Interesting correlations
