Although several scoring systems have been used to differentiate simple acute appendicitis from perforated appendicitis, no particular system has been widely accepted. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate preoperative factors associated with complicated appendicitis and to develop a scoring system that distinguishes complicated appendicitis in children aged <10 years. Patients aged <10 years who underwent surgical treatment for acute appendicitis between 2011 and 2019 were included in this study, after excluding those with insufficient medical records, with other diseases that affect the

Background Patients presenting with suspected appendicitis pose a diagnostic challenge. Various scoring systems have been designed to aid in the clinical assessment of these patients. Widely applied was Alvarado score and best performed in validating studies, but was observed with few drawbacks. Appendicitis inflammatory response (AIR) score was designed to overcome the drawbacks associated with the implementation of Alvarado scoring system. Objective The main objective of this study was to evaluate the Appendicitis inflammatory Response Score and compare its performance in predicting risk of

INTRODUCTION: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment is considered effective in reducing ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the influence of this treatment and to identify determinants of antiarrhythmic response.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included patients with OSA and VAs (corresponding to grades 2-5 in the Lown classification), who underwent CPAP treatment and controls, who refused CPAP therapy. Holter electrocardiographic monitoring was performed at baseline and after 3 months of follow‑up.
RESULTS: Th

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease with significant morbidity, yet appendicitis secondary to schistosomal infestation remains rare, even in endemic regions. We report a series of five cases of acute appendicitis in adult patients, where histopathological examination revealed schistosomal appendicitis. All patients presented with classical features of acute appendicitis, underwent appendectomy, and recovered uneventfully. One case demonstrated mural calcifications on preoperative imaging, raising suspicion of schistosomiasis preoperatively. Histology confirmed the diagnosis in all

Tirzepatide is a GLP1/GIP receptor agonist that is used to treat type 2 diabetes and promote weight loss. Common side effects of Tirzepatide include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More severe side effects include pancreatitis, cholelithiasis, thyroid cancer, and cholecystitis. With the increased use of these medications, additional side effects are being discovered. Delayed gastric emptying associated with GLP1/GIP receptor agonists can increase the risk of developing appendicitis due to changes in gastrointestinal motility. There is minimal data on the risk of developing appendicitis with Ti

Appendicitis is a common condition in daily clinical practice. Appendicitis due to foreign bodies is uncommon and may result from obstruction or perforation mechanism. We present a rare case of a 43-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with perforated appendicitis due to a fish bone by imaging studies and confirmed postoperatively. Confirming the fish bone causing the perforation on images is sometimes difficult, requiring the radiologist to actively search and determine the source. In addition to appendectomy, the surgeon also needs to pay attention to removing all foreign objects and trea

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between preterm birth and infantile appendicitis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter, matched case-control study. This study included consecutive patients <1 year of age with surgery- or autopsy-confirmed appendicitis, admitted between December 2007 and May 2023. For each case, 10 healthy infants were randomly selected and matched by age. Infants were categorized as neonates (0 to 28 days) or older infants (>28 days and <1 year).
RESULTS: The study included 106 infants diagnosed with appendicitis (median age 2.4 months) and

Acute appendicitis is an infrequent condition in neonates, especially in term infants. With around 100 cases in the last century and no specific diagnostic tool, this case report is an addition to the existing literature that helps in our understanding of the disease. A preterm infant who had greenish aspirates and dilated bowel loops on abdominal x ray and was treated on the lines of necrotizing enterocolitis failed to improve. Baby had issues of abdominal distension whenever feeds were started hence exploratory laparotomy was done on the 45th day of life which showed appendicitis with adhere

Clinical presentation of acute appendicitis, the most common cause of acute abdomen, is influenced by its location. The usual clinical signs of appendicitis may be completely changed or even absent in cases of atypical appendicular positions. Incisional hernia is the most common late complication of intra-abdominal operations. Organs most likely to be localized in the hernia sac are the omentum and small and large intestines. Occasionally other organs may also herniate, for example, the appendix. Incarcerations of these organs can lead to infarsation or even to gangrene. We present the case of

Stump appendicitis is a rare complication of appendectomy. It may develop from a few weeks to several years after the surgical procedure. To achieve its diagnosis a high index of suspicion is necessary. The objective of this publication is to make a review of two cases of this entity that occurred in our institution and to mention its most frequent imaging findings. Computed tomography is an excellent method to assess this entity, not only for its diagnosis but also to rule out other pathologies that present similar clinical features.

BACKGROUND: Appendicitis presents on a spectrum ranging from inflammation to gangrene to perforation. Studies suggest that gangrenous appendicitis has lower postoperative infection rates relative to perforated cases. We hypothesized that gangrenous appendicitis could be successfully treated as simple appendicitis, reducing length of stay (LOS) and antibiotic usage without increasing postoperative infections.
METHODS: In February 2016, we strictly defined complex appendicitis as a hole in the appendix, extraluminal fecalith, diffuse pus or a well-formed abscess. We switched gangrenous appendic

Diphyllobothrium latum (D. latum) infection in humans is uncommon in the United States. Although there has been a drastic decline in the report of D. latum infection in this region, physicians should be aware of an uncommon presentation and its clinical relevance. We report a case of 55-year-old female of Ecuadorian/Peruvian origin who presented with an unknown cause of chronic right lower quadrant abdominal pain for 2 months without other particular symptoms. Initial workup revealed evidence of iron deficiency anemia, and stool occult blood test was positive. She was scheduled for a colonosco

The authors presents the results of application of ultrasound investigation, diagnostic laparoscopy and multi-helical computer tomography in diagnostics of acute appendicitis. The research was applied on 139 patients whom clinical diagnosis was hard to establish using clinical - laboratory criteria. Ultrasound signs of acute appendicitis were revealed in 44 patients out of 139 (31,6%). Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed in 37 (26,6%) patients. According to the results of laparoscopy, the diagnosis of acute appendicitis was сonfirmed in 22 (70,2%) cases. The application of CT allowed the auth

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of pediatric appendicitis is still a challenge, resulting in perforation and negative appendectomies. The aim of this study was to evaluate novel biomarkers in urine and to use the most promising biomarkers in conjunction with the Pediatric Appendicitis Score (PAS), to see whether this could improve the accuracy of diagnosing appendicitis.
METHODS: A prospective study of children with suspected appendicitis was conducted with assessment of PAS, routine blood tests, and measurements of four novel urinary biomarkers: leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein (LRG), calprotectin, inte

In 2010, when I was 17, I presented to hospital with progressive discomfort and pain in the right iliac fossa when eating and moving, associated with mild fever and diarrhoea. Appendicitis was suspected but immediate surgery was deferred, as the inflammatory markers did not adequately support the clinical diagnosis of appendicitis. Further tests, including MRI, were then undertaken. The MRI showed evidence of terminal ileitis and a normal appendix. Crohn's disease was considered as part of the differential diagnosis. However, a Yersinia enterocolitica infection was subsequently confirmed. The
