Helicobacter pylori Prevalence and Risk Factors in Three Rural Indigenous Communities of Northern Arizona.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common bacterial stomach infections and is implicated in a majority of non-cardia gastric cancer. While gastric cancer has decreased in the United States (US), the incidence in the Navajo Nation is nearly four times higher than surrounding Non-Hispanic White populations. Little is known about H. pylori prevalence in this population or other Indigenous communities in the lower 48 states. In this cross-sectional study, 101 adults representing 73 households from three Navajo Nation chapter communities completed surveys and a urea breath test for

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) Screening in Arizona: Lessons Learned from the First 2 Years.

PURPOSE: The incidence of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in the USA was reported as 1 in 58,000 live births. In Arizona, it was anticipated that newborn screening would identify two to four cases of SCID per year. This estimate did not consider ethnic nuances in Arizona, with higher percentages of Native American and Hispanic populations compared to national percentages. The true incidence of SCID and non-SCID T cell lymphopenia has not previously been reported in Arizona. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on all abnormal SCID newborn screening (NBS) tests in Arizon

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever), Soil Moisture, and El Nino Southern Oscillation in California and Arizona.

The soil-borne fungal disease coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is prevalent across the southwestern United States (US). Previous studies have suggested that the occurrence of this infection is associated with anomalously wet or dry soil moisture states described by the "grow and blow" hypothesis. The growth of coccidioidomycosis is favored by moist conditions both at the surface and in the root zone. A statistical analysis identified two areas in Arizona and central California, with a moderate-to-high number of coccidioidomycosis cases. A Wavelet Transform Coherence (WTC) analysis between El

Uptake of meningococcal vaccine in Arizona schoolchildren after implementation of school-entry immunization requirements.

OBJECTIVES: Meningitis and bacteremia due to Neisseria meningitidis are rare but potentially deadly diseases that can be prevented with immunization. Beginning in 2008, Arizona school immunization requirements were amended to include immunization of children aged 11 years or older with meningococcal vaccine before entering the sixth grade. We describe patterns in meningococcal vaccine uptake surrounding these school-entry requirement changes in Arizona. METHODS: We used immunization records from the Arizona State Immunization Information System (ASIIS) to compare immunization rates in 11- and

Parasitism of prehistoric humans and companion animals from Antelope Cave, Mojave County, northwest Arizona.

Previously, we reported a tick recovered from Antelope Cave in extreme northwest Arizona. Further analyses of coprolites from Antelope Cave revealed additional parasitological data from coprolites of both human and canid origin. A second tick was found. This site is the only archaeological locality where ticks have been recovered. We also discovered an acanthocephalan in association with Enterobius vermicularis eggs in the same coprolite. This association shows that the coprolite was deposited by a human. This discovery expands our knowledge of the range of prehistoric acanthocephalan infectio

Molecular markers reveal differentiation among isolates of Coccidioides immitis from California, Arizona and Texas.

Coccidioides immitis causes coccidioidomycosis, a fungal disease of both immuno-compromised and otherwise healthy people; it is capable of causing large epidemics and the disease is often refractory to chemotherapy. To quantify the magnitude of population differentiation and estimate levels of gene flow in C. immitis, multilocus genotypes were scored for 20-25 clinical isolates from each of Bakersfield (California), Tucson (Arizona), and San Antonio (Texas). The molecular markers used were PCR products with polymorphic restriction endonuclease sites, found and characterized in a previous study

Oral corn pollen hypersensitivity in Arizona Native Americans: some sociologic aspects of allergy practice.

Thirty-three Navajo patients were seen in a private allergy consultation practice in Flagstaff, Arizona between 1978 and 1990. Sufficient skin test and historical data were available from nine atopic patients to evaluate hypersensitivity reactions to oral corn pollen used in the Navajo ceremonials. Six of the nine patients had positive skin test reactions to corn pollen and four of these six reported symptoms from oral corn pollen. The symptoms included various combinations of oral and ear itching, sneezing, cough, and wheezing. One corn pollen skin test-negative patient reported slight throat

Enhancing post-wildfire soil recovery in northern Arizona using biochar from waste forest biomass.

Increasing wildfire severity in the southwestern United States degrades the soil and hinders forest recovery in these ecosystems. The current study evaluates the efficacy of biochar produced from local ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Lawson & C. Lawson: var. arizonica (Engelm.) Shaw) slash using a mobile CharBoss® system for post-wildfire soil restoration. We installed 3 replicates of 3 treatments: (1) Biochar applied and mixed in the soil at 10 t ha-1 (BC10), (2) biochar applied at 20 t ha-1 (BC20), and (3) a wildfire-burned control (negative control (NC)) to soils burned in the 2022 Pipeline

Spatial point pattern analysis of environmental effects on valley fever intensity in Phoenix, Arizona.

Using a novel Arizona Medicaid data set, we model Valley fever (VF) cases in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area as a spatial point process during six month intervals between 2013 and 2023. We estimate the intensity function of VF cases, observed at residential locations of patients, as a function of environmental covariates available at high spatial resolutions: exposure to various land cover development categorizes, exposure to changes in land cover type, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), change in NDVI, and a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) for the Coccidioides fungus. Characteristics of Overdose Deaths Related to Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyl - Arizona, July 2019 - June 2020.

Using the Arizona State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (AZ-SUDORS), the study aims to identify the social and drug characteristics of illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF)-related overdose deaths. The data include drug overdose deaths from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. Decedents were categorized into four groups by types of opioids detected: (1) IMF-positive; (2) heroin-positive (negative for IMF); (3) pharmaceutical opioid-positive (negative for heroin or IMF); (4) nonopioid. Bivariate statistics were used to compare differences between IMF and other groups. Among 2,029 deceden

Excess mortality patterns during 1918-1921 influenza pandemic in the state of Arizona, USA.

PURPOSE: Our understanding of the temporal dynamics and age-specific mortality patterns of the 1918-1921 influenza pandemic remains scarce due to lack of detailed respiratory mortality datasets in the United States and abroad. METHODS: We manually retrieved individual death records from Arizona during 1915-1921 and applied time series models to estimate the age specific mortality burden of the 1918-1921 influenza pandemic. We estimated influenza-related excess mortality rates and mortality rate ratio increase over baseline based on pneumonia and influenza (P&I), respiratory, tuberculosis and

Epidemiology of Glomerular Disease in Southern Arizona: Review of 10-Year Renal Biopsy Data.

Glomerulonephritis stands third in terms of the etiologies for end-stage kidney disease in the USA. The aim of this study was to look at the patterns of biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis based on data from a single center.Kidney biopsy specimens of all patients above the age of 18 years, over a 10-year period, who had diagnosis of nondiabetic glomerular disease, were selected for the study. The most common histopathological diagnosis was focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) (22.25%, 158/710) followed by membranous nephropathy (20.28%, 144/710) and immunoglobulin (Ig)A nephropathy (19.71

Concurrent Outbreaks of St. Louis Encephalitis Virus and West Nile Virus Disease - Arizona, 2015.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) are closely related mosquito-borne flaviviruses that can cause outbreaks of acute febrile illness and neurologic disease. Both viruses are endemic throughout much of the United States and have the same Culex species mosquito vectors and avian hosts (1); however, since WNV was first identified in the United States in 1999, SLEV disease incidence has been substantially lower than WNV disease incidence, and no outbreaks involving the two viruses circulating in the same location at the same time have been identified. Currently, there is

Physiological resistance of grasshopper mice (Onychomys spp.) to Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides exilicauda) venom.

Predators feeding on toxic prey may evolve physiological resistance to the preys' toxins. Grasshopper mice (Onychomys spp.) are voracious predators of scorpions in North American deserts. Two species of grasshopper mice (Onychomys torridus and Onychomys arenicola) are broadly sympatric with two species of potentially lethal bark scorpion (Centruroides exilicauda and Centruroides vittatus) in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, respectively. Bark scorpions produce toxins that selectively bind sodium (Na(+)) and potassium (K(+)) ion channels in vertebrate nerve and muscle tissue. We previously r
