Verbal communication disorders in psychogenic dysphonia.

Psychogenic dysphonia is defined as disturbances in voice and speech quality with emotional background with lack of organic changes in the larynx. Mental condition has significant impact on the process of producing voice, functioning of respiratoryphonatory- articulation mechanism and speech prosody. The aim of the study was visual, acoustic, perceptual assessment as well as self-assessment of voice and speech quality using subjective and objective methods in patients with psychogenic dysphonia. The study included 50 patients with psychogenic dysphonia diagnosed in the Department of Clinical F

[Patients's with aphasia communication problems].

Aphasia is a speech disorder caused by disorders of speech centre in brain cortex. Patient with aphasia compensates communication disorders by communication strategy, witch are spontaneous mechanisms, and uses individual rehabilitation methods. Compensation mechanisms are divided in to: phonetic, inflective, formative, semantic, discursive and structural. Patients with aphasia early therapy have to be individual and consists in not only articulation correction, but in establish over verbal contact or verbal, and improvement this contacts, to create patients ability of communication with societ

A novel fixed-target task to determine articulatory speed constraints in persons with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to determine if talkers with ALS are limited in their ability to increase lower lip and jaw speed at an early stage of the disease when their speaking rate and intelligibility are only minimally or not affected. METHOD: A novel metronome paced fixed-target task was used to assess movement speed capacities during lower lip and jaw oscillations in seven talkers with ALS and seven age and gender matched controls. RESULTS: Lower lip peak speeds were significantly lower in talkers with mild ALS than in healthy talkers suggesting a lower lip speed constraint in

Working memory following improvements in articulation rate in children with cerebral palsy.

It has been postulated that rehearsal rate is the primary determinant of working memory capacity for verbal material (Baddeley et al., 1975). A previous study of normal control children and children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (SDCP) suggested that covert rather than overt rehearsal rate determines working memory capacity (White et al., 1994). In the current study, a subset of SDCP children who received a surgical treatment to relieve spasticity were retested on measures of articulation rate and memory span. A subset of control children from the original study were also retested. The

Long-term speech results of cleft palate speakers with marginal velopharyngeal competence.

The purposes of this study were to (1) examine the long-term speech status of patients judged to exhibit marginal velopharyngeal competence at 6 years of age and (2) determine whether speech performance data obtained at age 6 could be used to discriminate patients with marginal velopharyngeal competence who eventually demonstrate velopharyngeal incompetence from those who do not. Longitudinal speech performance data were retrieved for 48 subjects and examined descriptively for the total group. Data obtained at the subjects' last evaluation (adolescence) were then used to reassign these subject

Anomalies of Imagination and Disordered Self in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

Vivid mental imagery occurs frequently in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). Overlapping phenomena, such as obsessions or ruminations, are also frequent in other psychiatric disorders, raising significant diagnostic challenges. Unfortunately, contemporary operational psychopathology lacks the epistemological and phenomenological framework to address such questions. Using the resources of phenomenology and philosophy of mind, we articulate the structure of imagination and describe its distinctive modifications in the SSDs. Drawing on pilot data with patients' self-descriptions, we present

REVIEW OF ARTICULATED ELBOW ORTHOTICS FOR JOINT STIFFNESS REHABILITATION.

UNLABELLED: Joint stiffness is the most common complication in elbow injuries, presenting several etiologies and pathophysiological mechanisms that hinder treatment and prognosis. Prevention and treatment of joint contracture depend on the cause of stiffness, and early intervention should modify its outcomes. The methods used may be conservative or surgical, alone or in combination, according to each individual situation. OBJECTIVE: Review articles on articulated elbow orthosis for joint stiffness rehabilitation. METHODS: A literature review was conducted in journals available at the PubMed,

The Neurocognition of Developmental Disorders of Language.

Developmental disorders of language include developmental language disorder, dyslexia, and motor-speech disorders such as articulation disorder and stuttering. These disorders have generally been explained by accounts that focus on their behavioral rather than neural characteristics; their processing rather than learning impairments; and each disorder separately rather than together, despite their commonalities and comorbidities. Here we update and review a unifying neurocognitive account-the Procedural circuit Deficit Hypothesis (PDH). The PDH posits that abnormalities of brain structures und

Hypoglossal nerve palsy in the course of dissection of the internal carotid arteries - Case reports.

UNLABELLED: Internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) has become an increasingly recognized cause of cerebrovascular accidents in young and middle-aged patients. We report 2 cases of hypoglossal nerve palsy in the course of dissection of the internal carotid arteries. The first patient was admitted to the Department of Neurology due to swallowing difficulty, speech articulation disorders and numbness of the right half of the tongue for 4 weeks. Extracranial vessel ultrasound (US) and transcranial colour Doppler (TCD) visualized thrombus causing occlusion of the right internal carotid artery (R

Tap and trill clusters in typical and protracted phonological development: Challenging segments in complex phonological environments. Introduction to the special issue.

The papers in this crosslinguistic issue address children's acquisition of word-initial rhotic clusters in languages with taps/trills, that is, the acquisition of challenging segments in complex environments. Several papers also include comparisons with singleton rhotics and/or /l/ as a singleton or in clusters. The studies are part of a larger investigation that uses similar methodologies across languages in order to enhance crosslinguistic comparability (Bernhardt and Stemberger, 2012, 2015). Participants for the current studies were monolingual preschoolers with typical or protracted phonol

Trajectory and outcomes of speech language therapy in the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS): case report.

The aim of this study was to describe the trajectory and the outcomes of speech-language therapy in Prader-Willi syndrome through a longitudinal study of the case of an 8 year-old boy, along four years of speech-language therapy follow-up. The therapy sessions were filmed and documental analysis of information from the child's records regarding anamnesis, evaluation and speech-language therapy reports and multidisciplinary evaluations were carried out. The child presented typical characteristics of Prader-Willi syndrome, such as obesity, hyperfagia, anxiety, behavioral problems and self aggres

Gross unilateral abnormalities of the velum and pharynx.

OBJECTIVE: Velopharyngeal incompetence because of gross unilateral velopharyngeal hypoplasia is rare, particularly in patients with no significant hemifacial microsomia or facial asymmetry. We describe the abnormal anatomy and treatment of three patients with gross congenital velopharyngeal asymmetry. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Following surgery, all three patients showed a good improvement in velopharyngeal function and speech. Nasendoscopy and lateral videofluoroscopy were important in confirming the abnormal anatomy and pathology and in evaluating the degree of movement of the affected side

Children's history of speech-language difficulties: genetic influences and associations with reading-related measures.

PURPOSE: This study examined (a) the extent of genetic and environmental influences on children's articulation and language difficulties and (b) the phenotypic associations between such difficulties and direct assessments of reading-related skills during early school-age years. METHOD: Behavioral genetic analyses focused on parent-report data regarding the speech-language skills of 248 twin pairs (M = 6.08 years) from the Western Reserve Reading Project. In addition, phenotypic associations between children's speech-language status and direct assessments of early reading-related abilities wer

Can speech perception deficits cause phonological impairments? Evidence from short-term memory for ambiguous speech.

Poor performance on phonological tasks is characteristic of neurodevelopmental language disorders (dyslexia and/or developmental language disorder). Perceptual deficit accounts attribute phonological dysfunction to lower-level deficits in speech-sound processing. However, a causal pathway from speech perception to phonological performance has not been established. We assessed this relationship in typical adults by experimentally disrupting speech-sound discrimination in a phonological short-term memory (pSTM) task. We used an automated audio-morphing method (Rogers & Davis, 2017) to create amb

Direction of attentional focus in biofeedback treatment for /r/ misarticulation.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining an external direction of focus during practice is reported to facilitate acquisition of non-speech motor skills, but it is not known whether these findings also apply to treatment for speech errors. This question has particular relevance for treatment incorporating visual biofeedback, where clinician cueing can direct the learner's attention either internally (i.e., to the movements of the articulators) or externally (i.e., to the visual biofeedback display). AIMS: This study addressed two objectives. First, it aimed to use single-subject experimental methods to collec

Phonological change and the representation of consonant clusters in Spanish: a case study.

This single-subject case study evaluates effects of treatment of a complex onset on the sound system of a monolingual Spanish-speaking child (female, aged 3;9) with phonological delay. Pre-treatment, the child excluded all consonant+liquid clusters, as well as tap /[symbol: see text]/ and trill /r/. Immediately following training on /f[symbol: see text]-/ in non-words, the child generalized across consonant+liquid clusters and the tap singleton. These improvements continued to 2 months post-treatment follow-up, with the ultimate addition of the trill at that point in time. Consonant+glide sequ

Aphemia-like syndrome from a right supplementary motor area lesion.

Lesions in the left supplementary motor area (SMA) can result in a transcortical motor aphasia with nonfluent spontaneous verbal output and relatively preserved repetition. Reading and writing are proportionally affected. We report a patient with an ischemic lesion in the right SMA. He had impaired articulation and normal repetition plus preserved reading and writing, consistent with an aphemia. This patient supports the dissociation of articulatory fluency and linguistic fluency and suggests that both SMAs affect the initiating of articulatory movements required to produce words whereas the l

Variation among developmental dyslexics: evidence from a printed-word-learning task.

A word-learning task was used to investigate variation among developmental dyslexics classified as phonological and surface dyslexics. Dyslexic children and chronological age (CA)- and reading level (RL)-matched normal readers were taught to pronounce novel nonsense words such as veep. Words were assigned either a regular (e.g., "veep") or an irregular (e.g., "vip") pronunciation. Phonological dyslexics learned both regular and exception words more slowly than the normal readers and, unlike the other groups, did not show a regular-word advantage. Surface dyslexics also learned regular and exce
