Effects of acute perinatal asphyxia in the rat hippocampus.

In the present work, we have used a rat animal model to study the early effects of intrauterine asphyxia occurring no later than 60 min following the cesarean-delivery procedure. Transitory hypertonia accompanied by altered posture was observed in asphyxiated pups, which also showed appreciably increased lactate values in plasma and hippocampal tissues. Despite this, there was no difference in terms of either cell viability or metabolic activities such as oxidation of lactate, glucose, and glycine in the hippocampus of those fetuses submitted to perinatal asphyxia with respect to normoxic anim

Management of foetal asphyxia by intrauterine foetal resuscitation.

Management of foetal distress is a subject of gynaecological interest, but an anaesthesiologist should know about resuscitation, because he should be able to treat the patient, whenever he is directly involved in managing the parturient patient during labour analgesia and before an emergency operative delivery. Progressive asphyxia is known as foetal distress; the foetus does not breathe directly from the atmosphere, but depends on maternal circulation for its oxygen requirement. The oxygen delivery to the foetus depends on the placental (maternal side), placental transfer and foetal circulati

[Serum levels of homocysteine and folate in neonates with asphyxia].

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether serum homocysteine and folate levels are correlated with the occurrence of neonatal asphyxia and to study the effects of gender and gestational age on serum homocysteine and folate levels. METHODS: Thirty-five neonates with mild asphyxia (19 males and 16 females) and 40 normal neonates (control group,18 males and 22 females) were enrolled in this study. The asphyxia and the control groups consisted of 10 and 11 cases of preterm infants respectively. Serum homocysteine levels were measured using ELASA. Serum folate levels were measured using radioimmunity assay.

Quality of general movements in term infants with asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal asphyxia may result in a developmental disorder. A recently developed non-invasive tool to investigate brain function at an early age is the assessment of general movements (GMs). AIM: To evaluate relationships between perinatal risk factors and the quality of GMs in the neonatal period and at 3 months in term newborns with asphyxia in a secondary paediatric setting. METHODS: 64 term (>36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA)) infants with perinatal asphyxia were studied. GMs were assessed at 'writhing' GM age (38-47 weeks PMA) and at 'fidgety' GM age (48-56 weeks PMA). Pre- an

Contribution of the blood glucose level in perinatal asphyxia.

UNLABELLED: This is a comparative study between 60 asphyxiated newborns (cases) and 60 normal neonates (controls) in respect of their plasma glucose and uric acid levels and also their clinical and neurological status. The mean plasma glucose level was significantly lower (35.1 +/- 11.4 mg/dl vs. 56.9 +/- 5.5 mg/dl; P < 0.001) and the mean serum uric acid level was higher (8.0 +/- 1.2 mg/dl vs. 4.5 +/- 0.83 mg/dl; P < 0.001) in the asphyxiated group when compared to the controls. Within the perinatal asphyxia group, the plasma glucose level and Apgar scores showed a significant positive linear

Fatal asphyxia by a thyroglossal duct cyst in an adult.

Thyroglossal duct cysts arise from remnants of embryonic thyroglossal duct that connects the foramen cecum at the base of the tongue to the thyroid gland. The remnants enlarge secondary to secretions from the epithelial lining. Usually, thyroglossal cysts present as non-tender masses. However, they may also become infected, produce fistulas or give hoarseness and dysphagia. Rarely, especially if the mass is located at the base of the tongue, airway obstruction and dyspnea can ensue. This unusual presentation has been mainly seen in very young children and has caused death in about half of thes

[Recent progress in research on positional asphyxia of restraint].

Positional asphyxia of restraint means that when an individual was limited in an abnormal body position, asphyxia would take place owing to the disorder of spontaneous respiratory function, and finally it lead to die. So, it belongs to a special type of the mechanical asphyxia. From the cases reported, we could found that it would take place in several conditions. Because the cases were not caused enough recognition, the study has been researched carefully only in recent years. Following the more cases reported, many experts of forensic medicine had investigated it on the mechanism of death an

[A descriptive study of perinatal asphyxia and its sequelae].

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal asphyxia is a potential cause of brain injury that can produce some alterations on the neurologic development of the newborn. On the last years most part of the investigation have been focused on the physiopathology of the perinatal asphyxia, but correlation between asphyxia and brain damage is not well defined. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was made of the patients with the diagnosis of perinatal asphyxia born at the General Hospital of Segovia during a period of ten years (1992-2001). We took data about gestation, birth, neonatal period and follow-up pe

Determining the contribution of asphyxia to brain damage in the neonate.

Studies in the research laboratory have demonstrated the complex relationship between fetal and newborn asphyxia and brain damage, a balance between the degree, duration and nature of the asphyxia and the quality of the cardiovascular compensatory response. Clinical studies would support the contention that the human fetus and newborn behave in a similar manner. An accurate diagnosis of asphyxia requires a blood gas and acid base assessment. The clinical classification of fetal asphyxia is based on a measure of metabolic acidosis to confirm that fetal asphyxia has occurred and the expression o

Low Apgar scores and the definition of birth asphyxia.

Nonreassuring fetal heart rate patterns, prolonged labor, meconium-stained fluid, a low 1-minute Apgar score, and mild to moderate acidemia have no predictive value for long-term neurologic injury without signs of encephalopathy and seizures. It is important to provide proper resuscitation, support infants, and allow time for evaluation. We have time and the tools to provide fairly predictive information to the families. It is important to use this knowledge wisely in communicating honestly with families, because difficult decisions undoubtedly will arise.

[Perinatal asphyxia as incorrect explanation for mental retardation].

Three women, aged 21, 34 and 32 and with a family history of mental retardation said to be caused by perinatal asphyxia, each gave birth to a child with mental retardation. A chromosomal translocation, fragile X syndrome, and myotonic dystrophy could be diagnosed, respectively. In retrospect, the diagnosis of perinatal asphyxia in the family history had been too readily accepted. In reality the mental retardation was caused by a genetic disorder. Physicians are used to making a diagnosis, and when a diagnosis is not (yet) possible, they try to establish a working diagnosis or differential diag

Accidental asphyxia in bed in severely disabled children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are specific situations which may increase the risk of accidental asphyxia during sleep in children with physical and mental disabilities. METHODOLOGY: Review of all cases where death was attributed to accidental asphyxia caused by unsafe sleeping situations in children listed in the Department of Histopathology database over a 10-year period from March 1989 to February 1999. RESULTS: A total of 26 cases were found (M:F, 19:7; age range, 1-48 months; average age, 7.4 months). Of those cases, two involved children with significant mental and physical impa

Selection of babies for intervention after birth asphyxia.

Based on animal experiments, the therapeutic window for neonates with signs of perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia is probably less than 6 h, and early selection of patients is of utmost importance. In term neonates, fetal heart rate and blood flow patterns, the Apgar score, and other clinical scoring systems are insufficient to select patients for intervention, whereas umbilical artery pH<7.0 combined with umbilical arteriovenous differences in PCO(2), lactate/pyruvate ratios in cord blood, and CSF interleukin-1beta have a better predictive value. At present, neurophysiological methods such as (ampli

The authors present a casuistry of the injury endangering the life, which was caused by the unusual mechanism. The injured person was pulled inside of a conveyer and while shifting, not only his arm and physical (brachial) plexus was damaged, but he was also and especially, strangled by his clothes and he was seriously asphyxiated, which origin was in the first phase unexplainable.

Reexamination of custody restraint position and positional asphyxia.

The use of the hogtie restraint (also known as hobble or prone maximal restraint) by law enforcement and prehospital personnel has come under scrutiny because of reports of sudden deaths in persons placed in this restraint position. Some contend that this body position restricts chest and abdominal movement to the point that individuals are at risk for hypoventilatory respiratory compromise and "positional" asphyxiation. We review case reports of custody deaths in subjects placed in the hogtie position, as well as related medical literature regarding positional asphyxia. We also review the cur

[Perinatal differences in relation to the severity of perinatal asphyxia].

OBJECTIVE: Despite the widespread use of the term perinatal asphyxia, there is little uniformity in the clinical definition of asphyxia, which makes comparison of incidence, treatment and outcome very difficult. The aim of this study was to know the perinatal differences of perinatal asphyxia in relation to its severity (severe and non-severe). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective epidemiological study of perinatal asphyxia in fullterm infants born in our hospital between November 1991 and February 1995 was carried out. Perinatal asphyxia was graded as non-severe (1 minute Apgar score < or = 6
