Bilateral Cochlear Implantation in Pediatric Neurobrucellosis Complicated by Profound Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Complete Vision Loss.

This case report presents successful bilateral cochlear implantation (CI) in a pediatric patient with neurobrucellosis complicated by bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and irreversible bilateral vision loss. The report highlights the positive impact of CI on auditory perception and speech development in this complex clinical context. A 14-year-old girl developed acute bilateral blindness and subsequently experienced rapidly progressive bilateral SNHL despite appropriate antibiotic therapy for neurobrucellosis. In the 12th month following the onset of neurobrucellosis symptom

Audiometric Monitoring and Its Determinants in Patients Undergoing Chemoradiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Audiometric monitoring is recommended for patients receiving ototoxic (chemo)radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC), yet real-world uptake is poorly characterized and potentially inequitable. We quantified the uptake and timing of audiometric testing and examined rural-urban residence and age as candidate determinants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of 70 consecutive patients with HNC treated with radiotherapy between November 2024 and September 2025, comparing rural (n = 32) and urban (n = 38) residents. Outcomes

Test-Retest Reliability and Preliminary Validation of Smartphone-Based Threshold and Categorical loudness Measures in Home Settings.

Reliable hearing assessment at home can improve accessibility and reduce dependence on in-clinic testing. To be viable, home-based procedures must provide accurate results within short measurement times and remain robust to factors such as ambient noise and variable user attention. In this proof-of-concept study with a limited sample size, we evaluated two such procedures-a Graded Response Bracketing method (GRaBr) for pure-tone threshold estimation and a reinforced adaptive categorical loudness scaling method (rACALOS) for loudness-growth assessment - using remote, smartphone-based testing, a

Hot-cold water sound perception and auditory-thermal discrimination.

This study aimed to determine whether individuals can discriminate the temperature state of water using auditory cues alone and to identify the acoustic, perceptual, and neurocognitive factors associated with this ability. Sixty-three volunteers aged 18-25 years with normal hearing participated. Participants were presented with prerecorded sounds of hot and cold water being poured into four types of cups (glass, plastic, paper, porcelain) and completed discrimination and matching tasks while auditory processing and event-related potential measures were obtained. Results from Spectral-Temporall

Stability of residual low-frequency hearing in children with cochlear implants: Insights from contralateral ear trajectories.

INTRODUCTION: With expanded candidacy, cochlear implantation candidates increasingly present with residual acoustic hearing. The level and stability of residual hearing is particularly relevant when considering electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS). While adult data suggest relative stability, the natural history of residual hearing in children-who often have distinct and potentially progressive etiologies-remains poorly defined. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pediatric (<18 years) and adult patients who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation. Inclusion required contra

High-Pass and Low-Pass Filtered Digits-in-Noise Tests for Estimating Frequency-Specific Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the test characteristics of low-pass filtered speech (LPS) and high-pass filtered speech (HPS) digits-in-noise (DIN) tests. The method used filtered digit triplets presented in broadband (BB) noise to limit speech information above or below the filter cutoff frequency. The relationship between these filtered DIN results and pure-tone average (PTA) was explored. METHOD: A total of 125 participants with normal hearing or sensorineural hearing loss were recruited. Each participant completed BB, LPS, and HPS DINs for both ears, with 32 normal-hearing particip

[On a model of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in Wistar rats].

UNLABELLED: An experimental in vivo model of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity (CO) is a prerequisite for developing methods to prevent hearing loss resulting from cisplatin (CP) chemotherapy. However, there are no clear guidelines regarding its design in a research model as widely used as the Wistar rat. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a model of auditory analyzer injury in Wistar rats that reflects the specific nature of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on male Wistar rats of SPF status, n=24, weighing 300-340 g. CP was administered in doses of 6,

Whisker-based spatial cognition in mice.

Object localization has been well characterized in the visual and auditory systems, yet how tactile inputs are transformed into a percept of object location in external space remains unclear. Here, we developed a whisker-based categorization task in head-restrained mice that requires judgments of object position in the horizontal plane. Mice categorized object positions with minimal bias relative to the task category boundary and achieved submillimeter spatial acuity by sampling the object with multiple whiskers, a process that depended on the whisker-related primary somatosensory cortex. Sensory deficits in mice hypomorphic for a mammalian homologue of unc-53.

The migration of cells and the extension of cellular processes along pathways to their defined destinations are crucial in the development of higher organisms. Caenorhabditis elegans unc-53 plays an important role in cell migration and the outgrowth of cellular processes such as axons. To gain further insight into the biological function of unc53H2, a recently identified mammalian homologue of unc-53, we have generated mice carrying a mutation of unc53H2 and provide evidence that unc53H2 is involved in neuronal development and, more specifically, the development of different sensory systems. [Developmental dyslexia: contribution of modern neuropsychology].

In France about 1 million children are thought to present learning disabilities for reading that in most cases correspond to developmental dyslexias. These are specific and constitutional deficits that prevent rapid and automatic reading abilities from developing, in spite of a normal intelligence and normal visual and auditory acuity. The most frequent form of dyslexia is called "phonological dyslexia" as it results from a deficit of perception and manipulation of phonemes (i.e. "phonological awareness"). Functional neuro-imaging has great potential for helping understand such functional defi

Bilateral large vestibular aqueduct syndrome in an 11-year-old boy. Radiological and clinical findings.

Clinical observations supplemented with imaging examination show that the large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS) is a rare developmental anomaly of the inner ear, which leads to hearing loss. The authors present a case history, results of imaging examination (high resolution CT, MRI), results of hearing acuity examinations (tonal audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, brainstem auditory evoked potentials) and results of balance examinations (videonystagmography) in an 11-year-old boy suffering from deep mixed progressive hearing loss of the right ear due to head trauma. The aim of this paper is

Ageing and the auditory nerve: Hearing sensitivity and endbulb synapses.

Age-related hearing loss impairs speech understanding for socialization and music appreciation for enjoyment, both of which compromise quality of life and can lead to cognitive decline. It has previously been shown that while standard audiometric hearing thresholds can remain normal over time, speech understanding in noise is more difficult and there is the emergence of tinnitus. These specific hearing difficulties are not revealed by standard audiograms but we now know that they have been attributed to loss of high threshold auditory nerve fibers caused by the disappearance of terminal ending

Associations of standard and extended high-frequency thresholds with suprathreshold auditory brainstem response morphology in normal-hearing adults.

The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is essential for assessing neural integrity, yet the influence of subclinical extended high-frequency (EHF) deficits on waveform morphology remains insufficiently characterized. This cross-sectional study evaluated the distinct predictive utility of Global Standard Averages (0.125-8 kHz) versus EHF thresholds (9-20 kHz) for ABR latencies and amplitudes in 89 otologically healthy adults. While all but one participants exhibited clinically normal hearing thresholds (≤20 dB HL) across standard frequencies, multiple linear regression analyses were employed to

Effects of early hearing deficits on olivocochlear efferent neuron morphology in mice.

One of the fundamental features of age-related hearing loss is difficulty discriminating signals in the presence of background noise, a functional deficit that may be related to the loss of auditory efferent neurons. We hypothesize that the central degeneration of olivocochlear (OC) efferent neurons results from prolonged lack of afferent input. We investigated the time-course of central degeneration of medial (MOC) and lateral (LOC) OC efferent neurons in genetic mouse models that exhibit hearing loss during development. Tests to verify cochlear function were combined with anatomical and morp

Auditory processing deficits in individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: The high energy demand of the auditory and visual pathways render these sensory systems prone to diseases that impair mitochondrial function. Primary open-angle glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, has recently been associated with a spectrum of mitochondrial abnormalities. This study sought to investigate auditory processing in individuals with open-angle glaucoma. DESIGN/STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-seven subjects with open-angle glaucoma underwent electrophysiologic (auditory brainstem response), auditory temporal processing (amplitude modulation detection), and spee

Cognitive, physical, and mental profiles of older adults with misplaced self-evaluation of hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Although inconsistency between objective and subjective hearing loss among older adults has been suggested, a systematic examination of the cognitive and physical functioning among such older adults is lacking. Our objective was to assess the cognitive, physical, and mental profiles associated with the discrepancy. METHODS: The auditory acuity of 696 community-dwelling older adults was evaluated using a pure-tone average of hearing thresholds at 1.0 and 4.0 kHz in the better-hearing ear. Participants were then stratified as follows: normal hearing ≤ 25 dB, mild loss >25 dB and ≤40
