Electrophysiology of the auditory system.

This review has attempted to summarise the properties of electro physiological responses in the auditory system. The treatment was broad and consequently somewhat sketchy. For a more detailed recent treatment of the physiology of the auditory system the reader is referred to Pickles (1982), Møller (1983), or Altschuller et al (1986). The data on acoustic injury have been reviewed recently by Schmiedt (1984). Discussions of a number of topics such as development, hair cell function and speech encoding are found in Berlin (1984).

Peripheral and brainstem auditory function in paroxysmal (px) White Leghorn chicks.

The paroxysmal (px) chick is a mutant White Leghorn (Gallus domesticus) which appears normal at hatching and during the subsequent week. By ca. 8 days posthatching, various symptoms develop, of which the most obvious are depressed food intake (anorexia) and audiogenic seizures. Histological evidence suggests that central auditory and vestibular nuclei and fiber tracts begin to degenerate prior to seizure onset. This degeneration, which affects central and peripheral components of both systems, becomes increasingly severe over time although auditory stimulation continues to elicit seizures. Cha

Glial Cell Contributions to Auditory Brainstem Development.

Glial cells, previously thought to have generally supporting roles in the central nervous system, are emerging as essential contributors to multiple aspects of neuronal circuit function and development. This review focuses on the contributions of glial cells to the development of auditory pathways in the brainstem. These pathways display specialized synapses and an unusually high degree of precision in circuitry that enables sound source localization. The development of these pathways thus requires highly coordinated molecular and cellular mechanisms. Several classes of glial cells, including

Auditory brainstem anomalies in human albinos.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials recorded from human albinos indicate significant hemispheric asymmetry. The asymmetry is symptomatic of differences between decussated and nondecussated auditory pathways in albino and pigmented humans at approximately the level of the superior olivary nuclei. Abnormal decussation of auditory pathways in albinos probably coincides with known visual system anomalies.

Experimental and clinical aspects of the efferent auditory system.

The discovery of active mechanisms in the cochlea and the efferent auditory pathways from the brain to the cochlea demonstrated the existence of a modulation of the auditory input in the central nervous system (CNS). Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are weak signals that can be recorded in the ear canal and are considered a byproduct of an active process from the outer hair cells (OHCs) to the basilar membrane. The efferent auditory system plays an inhibitory role on the activity of OHCs; its stimulation reduces auditory nerve response, basilar membrane motility and OAEs amplitude. Indirect stimul

A comprehensive review of HCN channel expression and Ih in the auditory system: then, now, and future perspectives.

The hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) ion channel is highly specialized, mediating the flow of potassium and sodium ions when a cell is hyperpolarized. Since it was discovered nearly half a century ago, the HCN channel structure and function have been extensively characterized throughout the nervous system. This includes the auditory system, where HCN channels are abundantly expressed and are used to encode sound features with high temporal fidelity. Despite the ubiquitous presence of HCN channels in auditory regions, the physiological benefits of these channels within

Compensation in neuro-system related to age-related hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a major cause of chronic disability among the elderly. Individuals with ARHL not only have trouble hearing sounds, but also with speech perception. As the perception of auditory information is reliant on integration between widespread brain networks to interpret auditory stimuli, both auditory and extra-auditory systems which mainly include visual, motor and attention systems, play an important role in compensating for ARHL. OBJECTIVES: To better understand the compensatory mechanism of ARHL and inspire better interventions that may alleviate ARH

Predictive coding and stochastic resonance as fundamental principles of auditory phantom perception.

Mechanistic insight is achieved only when experiments are employed to test formal or computational models. Furthermore, in analogy to lesion studies, phantom perception may serve as a vehicle to understand the fundamental processing principles underlying healthy auditory perception. With a special focus on tinnitus-as the prime example of auditory phantom perception-we review recent work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, psychology and neuroscience. In particular, we discuss why everyone with tinnitus suffers from (at least hidden) hearing loss, but not everyone with hearing loss

Neural Hyperactivity of the Central Auditory System in Response to Peripheral Damage.

It is increasingly appreciated that cochlear pathology is accompanied by adaptive responses in the central auditory system. The cause of cochlear pathology varies widely, and it seems that few commonalities can be drawn. In fact, despite intricate internal neuroplasticity and diverse external symptoms, several classical injury models provide a feasible path to locate responses to different peripheral cochlear lesions. In these cases, hair cell damage may lead to considerable hyperactivity in the central auditory pathways, mediated by a reduction in inhibition, which may underlie some clinical

[Effect of noise on the auditory transduction].

The effects of noise on the auditory transduction and the temporary and permanent threshold shifts (TTS and PTS) are reviewed in relation to the physiology, the morphology and the mechanics of the Corti's organ and especially of the outer hair cells. The modification of the mechanical characteristics of the stereocilia: decrease of stiffness, shortening of the rootlets, softening of the interciliary links...reduce the number of ionic channels which are opened during the mechanical excitation of the Corti's organ. This reduction modifies greatly the behavior of the "cochlear amplifier" which is

A Rapid Anterior Auditory Processing Stream through the Insulo-parietal Auditory Field in the Rat.

The insular cortex is involved in a wide range of auditory functions in the mammalian brain. We studied the organization and basic response properties of auditory neurons in the insular cortex and adjacent areas by recording responses to sound stimuli in anesthetized female rats. Auditory neurons were present in an insulo-parietal auditory field that spans the boundary between the posterior insula, particularly in the granular insular cortex, and the ventral part of the adjacent nonprimary somatosensory fields. Confirming previous reports, neurons in this field had narrow tuning and were prefe

Initiating the development of multisensory integration by manipulating sensory experience.

The multisensory integration capabilities of superior colliculus neurons emerge gradually during early postnatal life as a consequence of experience with cross-modal stimuli. Without such experience neurons become responsive to multiple sensory modalities but are unable to integrate their inputs. The present study demonstrates that neurons retain sensitivity to cross-modal experience well past the normal developmental period for acquiring multisensory integration capabilities. Experience surprisingly late in life was found to rapidly initiate the development of multisensory integration, even m

Free-Field Cortical Steady-State Evoked Potentials in Cochlear Implant Users.

Auditory steady-state evoked potentials (SS-EPs) are phase-locked neural responses to periodic stimuli, believed to reflect specific neural generators. As an objective measure, steady-state responses have been used in different clinical settings, including measuring hearing thresholds of normal and hearing-impaired subjects. Recent studies are in favor of recording these responses as a part of the cochlear implant (CI) device-fitting procedure. Considering these potential benefits, the goals of the present study were to assess the feasibility of recording free-field SS-EPs in CI users and to c

The Neural Bases of Tinnitus: Lessons from Deafness and Cochlear Implants.

Subjective tinnitus is the conscious perception of sound in the absence of any acoustic source. The literature suggests various tinnitus mechanisms, most of which invoke changes in spontaneous firing rates of central auditory neurons resulting from modification of neural gain. Here, we present an alternative model based on evidence that tinnitus is: (1) rare in people who are congenitally deaf, (2) common in people with acquired deafness, and (3) potentially suppressed by active cochlear implants used for hearing restoration. We propose that tinnitus can only develop after fast auditory fiber

Neonatal auditory cortex lesions result in aberrant crossed corticotectal and corticothalamic projections in rats.

Ablation of one auditory cortex at birth in rats results in the formation of aberrant crossed projections from the intact hemisphere. These aberrant projections extend throughout most of the corticorecipient zone of the contralateral inferior colliculus and can be traced as far rostral as the contralateral medial geniculate nucleus. The aberrant crossed corticothalamic axons arise from layer V pyramidal neurons in the intact auditory cortex.

Interpretation of brainstem auditory evoked potentials: results from intracranial recordings in humans.

The results of recording intracranially from the auditory nerve, lower brainstem nuclei, and the inferior colliculus in more than 40 patients operated upon for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia are presented. Recordings from the auditory nerve have shown that the auditory nerve is the neural generator of the first two peaks in the human ABR. Recordings from the entrance of the eighth nerve into the brainstem and locations close to that reveal potentials; the latencies of the peaks in these potentials match those of peaks III and IV. These peaks are therefore assumed to have their sourc

Central auditory disorders: toward a neuropsychology of auditory objects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Analysis of the auditory environment, source identification and vocal communication all require efficient brain mechanisms for disambiguating, representing and understanding complex natural sounds as 'auditory objects'. Failure of these mechanisms leads to a diverse spectrum of clinical deficits. Here we review current evidence concerning the phenomenology, mechanisms and brain substrates of auditory agnosias and related disorders of auditory object processing. RECENT FINDINGS: Analysis of lesions causing auditory object deficits has revealed certain broad anatomical correl

Effect of bilateral auditory cortex lesions on absolute thresholds in Japanese macaques.

1. The behavioral audiograms of four Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) were assessed before and after receiving two-stage bilateral lesions of auditory cortex. Thresholds were assessed for each ear with the use of insertion earphones. 2. The bilateral lesions resulted in a large initial hearing loss followed by partial recovery that left the animals with a permanent hearing loss in both ears. 3. The initial hearing loss consisted of a total insensitivity to sound in the ear contralateral to the second lesion with limited hearing in the other ear. However, the animal with the most complete les

Comparison of Indicators of Short and Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials in Newborns.

Auditory evoked potentials (EVP) are an effective and non-invasive way to assess the functional state of the auditory nerve and auditory sensory pathways of the brainstem. An increase in the latent periods of peaks III, IV, V, as well as a lengthening of the time of central sound conduction of III-V and I-V waves in all newborns with hyperbilirubinemia, indicates a pathology of hearing of central origin with impaired conduction along the auditory pathways at the level of the lower and middle third of the brain pons.
