Spontaneous spinal cord infarction in Austria: a two-center comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord infarction (SCI) is a neurological emergency associated with high rates of persistent neurological deficits. Knowledge about this rare but potentially treatable condition needs to be expanded. OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics of spontaneous SCI in a large retrospective series of patients treated at two tertiary care centers in Austria. METHODS: We performed a descriptive and comparative analysis of spontaneous SCI treated at the University Hospitals of Salzburg and Graz between the years 2000 and 2020. The analysis included pre- and in-hospital procedures, c

Multiresistant Bacteria Isolated from Intestinal Faeces of Farm Animals in Austria.

In recent years, antibiotic-resistant bacteria with an impact on human health, such as extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-containing Enterobacteriaceae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), have become more common in food. This is due to the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, which leads to the promotion of antibiotic resistance and thus also makes food a source of such resistant bacteria. Most studies dealing with this issue usually focus on the animals or processed food products to examine the antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thi

Zoonotic pathogen screening of striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius) from Austria.

The striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) is known to carry several zoonotic pathogens, including Leptospira spp. and Dobrava-Belgrade orthohantavirus (DOBV). Since its first detection in 1996 in south-east Austria, the striped field mouse has further expanded its range in Austria. Here, we screened 35 striped field mice collected in an Austrian region near the Hungarian border for DOBV, Leptospira spp. and seven vector-borne pathogens. Hantavirus RT-PCR screening and DOBV IgG ELISA analysis led to the detection of two DOBV-positive striped field mice. The complete coding sequences of all th

[Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and TBE-vaccination in Austria: Update 2014].

TBE is a public health problem well under control in Austria because of a mass vaccination programme. There have been 50-100 registered cases per year for many years, the vaccination rate of the population is currently 85 %. Special attention has to be given to the "older" generation 40 plus as this is the segment of the population where the majority of cases are observed annually. In comparison of the counties, Tyrol and Upper Austria finished first and second after a long time when Styria and Carynthia had observed most of the cases. For TBE applies the same as for Tetanus, namely the princi

Outbreak of Clostridium difficile 027 infection in Vienna, Austria 2008-2009.

From November 2008 to 15 April 2009, 36 isolates of CD027 identified in Austria, all originating from four hospitals in Vienna. All isolates were positive for toxin A, toxin B and the binary toxin, and showed a characteristic 18 bp deletion in the tcdC gene. Clostridium difficile is an anaerobic spore-forming bacterium. Some strains may cause diarrhoea due to formation of toxins. Symptomatic C. difficile infection (CDI) is primarily linked with hospital admission and antibiotic treatment, although antibiotic exposure is neither necessary nor sufficient for CDI [1,2]. In Belgium, for instance,

Drug supply shortages and their consequences for the medical profession: a survey in Germany and Austria.

Drug supply shortages are increasingly becoming a critical topic in the treatment of patients. Not only the reasons for the supply shortages are important but also their consequences for the medical profession. Firstly, this paper identifies which drug shortages have particularly affected medical doctors. Secondly, the additional time required for medical doctors due to supply shortages is analysed. A survey was conducted with 895 physicians from Germany and Austria using a purposive sampling method. The survey targets the supply shortages and its consequences for the medical profession of 20

Estimation of the burden of Lyme borreliosis in Austria using hospital discharge data.

OBJECTIVES: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. LB is not a mandatorily notifiable disease in Austria, resulting in limited epidemiological data. To address this gap, this study aimed to estimate and characterize the incidence of hospitalized LB in Austria from 2015 to 2023 and to extrapolate medically-attended LB by manifestation. METHODS: LB cases were identified from the Austrian National Public Health Institute's hospital discharge database, based on ICD-10 codes. The data included patient demographics, reasons for hospitalization, length of stay, and un

Tick bites and erythema migrans in eastern Austria: A large outpatient survey.

BACKGROUND: Data on tick bites and erythema migrans (EM) in eastern Austria remain limited despite ongoing changes in tick ecology. METHODS: A survey was conducted including 3005 dermatology patients in eastern Austria. Patients reported tick bites within the preceding year, subsequent EM and associated symptoms. Demographic data were collected, including age, sex, and urbanization level. Associations between tick bites, EM and demographic and geographic variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests and logistic regression, including flexible spline modeling of age.

The illness of empress Maria Theresa as a trigger for the adoption of variolation in Austria (1768).

In 1767, Austrian Empress Maria Theresa contracted smallpox and survived, but the disease had already claimed the lives of several members of her family. These personal losses renewed her interest in preventive measures against smallpox. Although initially skeptical, she authorized her physician, Gerard van Swieten, to explore the emerging practice of variolation. In 1768, Habsburg children were variolated by Jan Ingen-Housz-a landmark event in Austrian public health. To commemorate these events, the empire issued medals that not only celebrate scientific progress but also promote the state's

Knowledge on the male reproductive tract and testicular cancer among adolescents in Austria.

PURPOSE: Testicular cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour among young adults. Therefore, regular self-examination for early detection is recommended by all guidelines. The fact that the knowledge of young adults living in Austria on this important topic is unknown, prompted the current investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the knowledge on anatomy and function of the male reproductive tract and of testicular cancer in particular a German questionnaire recently developed by Anheuser et al. (Urologe 2019;58:1331-1337) was applied. This 4-page questionnaire contains mainly mul

Bleeding skin lesions in gestating sows of a piglet producing farm in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Stomoxys calcitrans, the stable fly, occurs in pig producing countries worldwide. While in cattle the impact of this blood sucking insect is quite well described, its role in pig production is poorly investigated. Here we describe a case of a massive stable fly overpopulation in the gestation unit of a piglet producing farm in Austria that resulted in bleeding skin lesions in bitten sows. CASE PRESENTATION: In October 2021, the responsible herd veterinarian of the case farm reported of sows in the gestation area presenting with bloody crusts on the whole skin surface of the body a

The clinical and molecular landscape of congenital myasthenic syndromes in Austria: a nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS) are a heterogeneous group of disorders caused by genetic defects resulting in impaired neuromuscular transmission. Although effective treatments are available, CMS is probably underdiagnosed, and systematic clinico-genetic investigations are warranted. METHODS: We used a nationwide approach to collect Austrian patients with genetically confirmed CMS. We provide a clinical and molecular characterization of this cohort and aimed to ascertain the current frequency of CMS in Austria. RESULTS: Twenty-eight cases with genetically confirmed CMS were
