A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of psychiatric emergency. His symptoms were similar to encephalitis, metabolic encephalopathy or acute depressive psychosis because of poor focal neurological signs. Laboratory examinations, including routine hematological and biochemical investigations, serum vitamin B1 B12 levels, and cerebrospinal fluid obtained by lumbar puncture, were normal. Brain CT was also normal, therefore it was difficult to make a diagnosis. But, we could clinically diagnose him as having pulmonary adenocarcinoma with numerous metastatic nodules of the

OBJECTIVE: To study the spectrum of histopathological changes in the liver in cases of tuberculosis.
MATERIALS & METHODS: This is an autopsy study consisting of 150 adult cases of tuberculosis over a period of 3 years. The diagnosis of tuberculosis was made on the basis of caseating granulomas or acid fast bacilli in the tissue. Cases showing only healed foci of tuberculosis at autopsy were excluded. Clinical details of all cases were obtained from hospital records. At autopsy, gross examination was done meticulously with special emphasis on the liver and extrahepatic biliary tree. Sections f

We report a case of fatal Hirschsprung's disease (HD) discovered at autopsy. A 20-year-old man collapsed at home. Emergency medical personnel found him in cardiac arrest and all resuscitative efforts failed. He had a past history of chronic constipation since infancy. Forensic autopsy revealed a megacolon full of gas and stools. Microscopic examination showed absence of ganglion cells in a short segment of the rectum and enterocolitis in the left and transverse colon. HD is rarely described in adults. In many cases, patients complained of constipation since infancy but the affection remained m

BACKGROUND: To determine whether classic analgesic nephropathy with renal papillary and urothelial capillary sclerosis could still be detected at autopsy in the beginning of the 21st century, the present study which is similar to a previous one performed in 1980 was undertaken as suggested by the Ad Hoc Committee of the International Study Group on Analgesics and Nephropathy.
METHODS: Consecutive autopsies of 616 adults performed at the Basle Institute of Pathology between November 2000 and February 2002 were analysed. Tissue samples of renal cortex and papilla of 1220 kidneys and of each ure

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC), where the pulmonary venous circulation drains into the systemic venous circulation rather than into the left atrium, may present a number of problems at autopsy. A 5-week-old infant is reported who died suddenly and unexpectedly who was found at autopsy to have infradiaphragmatic TAPVC into the portal vein. The only associated anomalies were a tri-lobed left lung, a patent ductus arteriosus, and drainage of the inferior vena cava into the both the right and left atria. This case demonstrates particular features that may lead to difficulties

This report describes a case report of a postmortem performed on a 5-year old patient of Tay-Sachs disease, presenting with failure to thrive, muscular flaccidity, and cherry-red spots on macula on fundoscopy. There was no history of similarly affected sibling or any other family member. The diagnosis was confirmed by enzyme studies. At postmortem, there was no organomegaly. The brain, on microscopy, showed vacuolated swollen neurons.

BACKGROUND: Microcystic adnexal carcinoma is a clinically aggressive, local destructive sweat gland carcinoma with a high rate of recurrence, but regional or distant metastasis is quite rare.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe an autopsy case of microcystic adnexal carcinoma with hematogenous metastasis and perineural intracranial spreads.
METHODS: This is an autopsy case of a 73-year-old woman with hematogenous metastasis of microcystic adnexal carcinoma followed for more than 20 years.
RESULT: The autopsy study revealed that the metastatic lesions were located in the perineural intr

Cardiac sarcoidosis is a disease of young adults. In most cases it presents with sudden death, arrhythmias, conduction disorders, heart failure or cardiomyopathy. The authors describe two cases of myocardial involvement by sarcoidosis that lead to death of the patients. Case one was a 26-year-old Indian man who was previously well and presented with sudden death. Autopsy showed nodules of sarcoid granuloma involving the heart, lungs and lymph nodes. Case two was a 47-year-old Indian lady who complained of reduced effort tolerance. Echocardiography showed that she had restrictive hypertrophic c

During every autopsy, small tissue samples are taken from each organ for microscopic examination. Organs or part of organs are retained for a longer period if (a) the organ concerned is so small that the entire organ is needed for the microscopic examination; (b) the organ exhibits complicated abnormalities which can only be diagnosed following fixation or a special treatment; (c) the organ must be fixed before the examination can take place, for example, the brain. This means that the corpse is not buried or cremated in its entirety. Next of kin are not always aware of this procedure even if

We report an autopsy case of a male fetus with Adams-Oliver syndrome. His mother was a healthy, 31-year-old woman and her family and past histories were unremarkable. Therapeutic termination was done at 28(+6) weeks gestational age due to oligohydramnios detected by antenatal ultrasonography. Chromosomal study revealed normal karyotype. On autopsy, characteristic transverse terminal defect of four extremities was found. Both feet were short and broad. All toes were rudimentary with no nails and fingers were irregularly short. On infantogram, all toe-bones were stubby and rudimentary. The middl

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal hemochromatosis is a disease that starts in utero, characterized by severe fibrosis or cirrhosis and siderosis of the liver and other organs without affecting the mononuclear fagocytic system. The most important clinical features are severe hepatic failure at birth and hypoglycemia. The diagnosis is made excluding other diseases more frequently seen in the neonatal period and with at least two of the clinicopathologic criteria delineated by Knisely.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the autopsies of newborn done at the Department of Pathology of the Hospital de Pedia

BACKGROUND: A case of fetal form of Gaucher disease in a Japanese fetus is presented.
RESULTS: A macerated baby showing hydrops fetalis was dissected at 29 weeks of gestation. The fetus was heavier in the body, liver and spleen than a normal fetus at the same gestation period. It also suffered from pericardial effusion and ascites. The diagnosis of Gaucher disease was made by histological and biochemical findings. In microscopical examinations 'Gaucher cells', which were periodic acid-Shiff (PAS)-positive, alcian blue-positive and CD68-positive, existed in the lungs, liver, spleen, thymus, ad

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To describe the pulmonary complications in patients with HIV infection, and the changes in the incidence of these complications over a 12-year period.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of autopsy records.
SETTING: Two university-affiliated medical centers.
PATIENTS: We studied autopsy findings from 233 patients with HIV infection who died between 1985 and 1996. Demographic data, risk factors for HIV infection, and the lengths of hospital stay were obtained. BACKGROUND: This study examined the ability of autopsy to confirm or dispute presumptive cause of death among cardiac surgery patients.
METHODS: Autopsy reports were compared with mortality conference notes that were dictated prospectively before autopsy results were available. Between January 1985 and December 1995, there were 600 hospital deaths among 13,029 adult cardiac surgery patients (4.6% mortality). Of these 600 deaths, 147 (24.5%) had postmortem examination.
RESULTS: Annual autopsy rate remained constant over the course of the study. Autopsied patients were younger (60.4 +/- 15 ver

Multiple sclerosis (MS) associated with intramedullary cysts has been recently documented radiographically in approximately a dozen cases, but histological confirmation in these cases has been lacking. These cysts have been noted to occur centrally in the spinal cord and have been previously diagnosed as syringomyelia. We report a patient with extensive hydromyelia, but no dissecting syringomyelic cavity, of the thoraco-lumbar spinal cord, which was co-existent with centrally located, non-necrotic, chronic demyelinative plaques. A few well demarcated non-necrotic plaques were seen in the cereb

The autopsy findings of a fetus with deletion of the long arm of chromosome 8 are described. Many of the features are similar to those of the tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndromes, types I and II, which are associated with deletions on chromosome 8q24. Other findings in this case, such as total absence of the corpus callosum and intestinal malrotation, have not been described in these syndromes. Genes involved in the development of the latter malformations may reside in adjacent regions on the long arm of chromosome 8. An elevated serum level of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (beta hCG) was fou

In hospital cases, since a clinical history is usually present and the cause of death suspected, the chief duty of the pathologist is to describe and study the pathologic conditions revealed by his dissection. In medicolegal cases, the forensic pathologist must determine the cause of death and the circumstances of death, without any clinical history or clue to guide him except the lesion of trauma or disease which he discovers post mortem. The recognition of asphyxia as a cause of death at autopsy is occasionally difficult and requires considerable care, skill and understanding based on experi

Congenital Bicuspid Aortic Valve is a common congenital anomaly. We studied 48 cases of bicuspid aortic valve seen over a period of 20 years. 18 cases were associated with other congenital anomalies, patent ductus arteriosus being the most frequent. 30 were isolated lesions. The morphology of the cusps and position of raphe were noted. Calcification and infective endocarditis were frequently noted in the isolated forms of Bicuspid Aortic Valve. Coronary arteries were dissected in 32 cases to determine the dominance.

Ectopia cordis (EC) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the abnormal position of the heart outside the thorax. Since it is often associated with intracardiac anomalies, an adequate surgical approach requires a precise knowledge of the intra- and extracardiac morbid anatomy. We report 4 cases of EC with a detailed description of intracardiac findings at autopsy. The associated malformations were severe and aggravated the outcome. Intracardiac anomalies are sometimes mild, but can be associated with a severe extracardiac defect.

An autopsy study of 20 cases is presented. The mean age was 32 years (range: 14-45). Four cases (20%) presented with jaundice. Another four (20%) had continuous fever with abdominal pain. Six had loose motions with blood and mucus in the stools. The mean duration of illness was 7.2 days. All cases were thin and emaciated. Liver was grossly enlarged (mean weight: 2680 g). The abscess was single in all cases except one. The right lobe was involved in 15 cases, the left in four and both in one. The average size of abscess was 13 cm. The abscess had ruptured in the abdomen in 3 patients, for which
