PURPOSE: Monitoring β-cell mass and function would provide a better understanding of diabetes, setting the stage for truly individualized therapies. We applied a combined PET/MRI protocol to monitor engrafted islets mass and function without pre-labeling of isolated cells. A PET tracer binding to GLP-1R quantifies β-cell mass, while Mn-CA characterizes β-cell function. Incorporation of 3H-thymidine during organ culture of duodenal biopsy specimens from 34 coeliac and 10 non-coeliac patients was studied by autoradiography. A carcinoma of the renal pelvis was diagnosed in a female patient 42 years after a retrograde Thorotrast pyelogram. The patient died as a result of the carcinoma at the age of 60. The literature is reviewed. As a result of this case, the need is stressed for early recognition of Thorotrast depositis in the kidney. In this case it was demonstrated by autoradiography. Appropriate treatment is discussed.
