Soil respiration represents the transfer of CO₂ from the soil to the atmosphere and is one of the largest terrestrial carbon fluxes after gross primary production. Because it is driven largely by the metabolic activity of soil organisms, it is widely recognized as a sensitive indicator of soil biological activity, carbon turnover, and the impacts of environmental or management-related disturbances. Soil respiration integrates multiple CO₂ sources, including autotrophic respiration from plant roots and rhizosphere microorganisms, and heterotrophic respiration associated with microbial decomposi

To date, comparatively little is known about the role of natural Fe(II)-bearing minerals in bioremediation of chromium (VI) contaminated aquifers subject to chemoautotrophic conditions. This work employed four kinds of Fe(II)-bearing minerals (pyrite, mackinawite, wustite, and magnetite) as inorganic electron donors to support Cr(VI) bio-reduction. In batch experiments, mackinawite (FeS) performed best, with Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 98.1 ± 1.21 % in 96 h. Continuous column experiments lasting 180 d implied that groundwater chemistry and hydrodynamics influenced the Cr(VI) removal process.

iron-carbon (IC) materials were packed as fillers into the anoxic and micro-aerobic zones of a biological filter, and for the first time, these two zones were electrically connected via a conductive wire to enable electron transfer from the micro-aerobic zone to the anoxic zone. Microorganisms in the anoxic zone utilized the cross-regionally transferred electrons to drive nitrate denitrification, thereby enhancing the denitrification efficiency, reducing the requirement for external carbon sources, and simultaneously achieving high total phosphorus (TP) removal. This configuration constitutes

In this study, the extraction of lutein from the microalgae Scenedesmus almeriensis cultivated under heterotrophic conditions was investigated with the aim of making the process more environmentally friendly, less toxic for subsequent food and feed usage, and with a reduced ecological footprint. The results show that freeze-drying the biomass does not increase lutein recovery (p > 0.05). Additionally, [Formula: see text]C storage of wet biomass is a viable alternative (15 % loss) to -[Formula: see text]C storage. Ethanolic KOH solution was found to be more effective (+32.8 %) for lutein extrac

Drinking water safety is confronted with escalating challenges from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) comprising natural organic matter (NOM) and micropollutants. Herein, multi-objective purification was carried out through a dual-electric centers Fe, Al-complexed graphene-like supported on commercial alumina (Fe, Al-GL/A2O3) biofilter for sand-filtered water from the Pearl River water source in China. About 31.8% of all antibiotics in the raw water were removed, while C/N-disinfection byproducts formation potential (DBPFP) were decreased 33.2% and 25.7%, along with 32.3% antibiotic resistance ge

In the anoxic stage of anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2/O) process, similar to the anaerobic stage, sulfate can be reduced by sulfate-reducing bacteria to sulfide, threatening human health and environmental security. Without affecting nitrogen removal, utilizing nitrate refluxed from the oxic stage to directly interfere with sulfide conversion might be an effective strategy for in-situ sulfide control. Herein, the performance and mechanism of nitrate reduction on inhibiting sulfate reduction and controlling sulfide were explored for the first time in a lab-scale anoxic bioreactor in depth. The result

Cyanobacteria occasionally self-immobilize and form spherical aggregates. This photogranulation phenomenon is central for oxygenic photogranules, which present potential for aeration-free and net-autotrophic wastewater treatment. Light and iron are tightly coupled via photochemical cycling of Fe, suggesting that phototrophic systems continually respond to their combined effects. Thus far, photogranulation has not been investigated from this important aspect. Here, we studied the effects of light intensity on the fate of Fe and their combined effects on the photogranulation process. Photogranul

Marine sediments are the active sites for the biogeochemical cycling of sulfur. Sulfate is used as a major terminal electron acceptor for the anaerobic oxidation of organic compounds in deep sediments, and the produced sulfide is normally oxidized back to sulfate in upper sediments. However, it is unclear which microorganisms, metabolic pathways, and enzymes are mainly involved in oxidation. Here, we used metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and the testing of sulfide, thiosulfate, and sulfite oxidation in sediment samples to figure out how sulfide is oxidized in the Bohai Sea sediments. Surpris

Sulfur disproportionation (SDP), a microbial metabolism that couples the oxidation and reduction of intermediate-valence sulfur compounds, is increasingly recognized as a key process in both natural sulfur cycling and engineered environmental systems. Despite growing interest, our understanding of SDP remains incomplete, and its practical significance has often been overlooked. This critical review integrates recent advances in ecophysiology, molecular mechanisms, and reactor-scale applications to establish a unified framework and provide practical guiding principles for SDP. We first summariz

BACKGROUND: Interest in processing high-tonnage biodiesel production waste (crude glycerol and microalgal biomass after lipid extraction) into commercial products is steadily growing. Moreover, it is attractive to utilize these wastes for the microbiological production of fumaric acid (FA) using immobilized microorganisms, as it combines chemical and biological processes.
METHODS: The authors developed original approaches to FA production, which immobilize microalgal Chlorella vulgaris cells and the mycelium of the fungus Rhyzopus oryzae. Traditional techniques were employed for cultivating m

The facultative chemolithoautotroph Cupriavidus necator is capable of heterotrophic growth on diverse carbon sources, or of autotrophic growth using CO2 fixation with H2 as an energy source. Under stress conditions, it produces biodegradable polyesters (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs) as a storage material occupying a high proportion of the total biomass. This metabolic versatility means that C. necator is under intense study for sustainable biotechnology processes; however, a relative lack of understanding of the overall regulatory architecture has limited its application. The major mechanisms b

Microbial electrosynthesis is a metabolic process in which extracellular electrons are utilized as the primary energy source for carbon fixation. While microbial electrosynthesis has been proposed as a novel concept for ecological primary production, our understanding of how such microorganisms are distributed in natural environments remains limited. In this study, we constructed a laboratory-scale electrochemical cultivation system that simulates electric discharge conditions in deep-sea hydrothermal fields. Microscopic counts revealed increased cell numbers in the electrochemical culture, an

The co-contamination of antibiotics and nitrogen has attracted widespread concerns due to its potential harm to ecological safety and human health. Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SAD) with low sludge production rate was adopted to treat antibiotics laden-organic deficient wastewater. Herein, a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was established to explore the simultaneous removal of nitrate and antibiotics, i.e. Norfloxacin (NOR), as well as microbial response mechanism of SAD sludge system towards NOR exposure. About 80.78 % of NOR was removed by SAD sludge when the influent

Mangrove, seagrass, and coral habitats often lie adjacent to each other in the tropics and subtropics. Lateral carbon fluxes and their consecutive effects on CO2 dynamics and air-water fluxes along the ecosystem continuum are often overlooked. We measured the partial pressure of CO2 in water and associated biogeochemical parameters with a high temporal resolution and estimated air-water CO2 fluxes along the ecosystem continuum. Their lateral fluxes were estimated by using a biogeochemical mass-balance model. The results showed that the waters surrounding mangrove, seagrass, and coral habitats

In biofilters of recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS), nitrification by lithoautotrophic microorganisms is essential to prevent the cultivated organisms from intoxication with ammonium and nitrite. In moving-bed biofilters nitrifying microorganisms are immobilized together with heterotrophic bacteria in dense biofilms on carrier elements like plastic beads. Analyses of fatty acid profiles of these biofilms from a marine biofilter revealed a high abundance of Nitrospira-related lipid markers (8-12% of total fatty acids). Further results of a labeling experiment with (13) C-bicarbonate in min

Mercury (Hg) contamination is common in stream and river ecosystems, but factors mediating Hg cycling in the flowing waters are much less understood than inthe lakes and wetlands. In this study, we examined the spatial patterns of methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the dominant groups of aquatic insect larvae across a network of streams (drainage area ranging from 0.5 to 150 km2) in northern California during summer baseflow conditions. We found that, with the exception of water striders, all invertebrate groups showed significant (p < 0.05) increases in MeHg concentrations with drainage a

In this work, we query the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii copper regulon at a whole-genome level. Our RNA-Seq data simulation and analysis pipeline validated a 2-fold cutoff and 10 RPKM (reads per kilobase of mappable length per million mapped reads) (~1 mRNA per cell) to reveal 63 CRR1 targets plus another 86 copper-responsive genes. Proteomic and immunoblot analyses captured 25% of the corresponding proteins, whose abundance was also dependent on copper nutrition, validating transcriptional regulation as a major control mechanism for copper signaling in Chlamydomonas. The impact of copper deficie

Polysulfide (Sn2-) produced by sulfur-disproportionating bacteria (SDB) mediated sulfur disproportionation (SD) could serve as effective electron donors for high-rate nitrogen removal from low C/N wastewaters. The syntrophic interactions between SDB and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) have been considered the key for establishing Sulfur disproportionation-driven Polysulfide-Enhanced Expeditious autotrophic DeNitrification (SPEEDN) process. However, the presence of NO3- could inhibit SD activity, making it difficult for achieving the stable syntrophic symbiosis between SDB and SOB. To address t

Biological souring (producing sulfide) is a global challenge facing anaerobic water bodies, especially the oil reservoir fluids. Nitrate injection has demonstrated great potential in souring control, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) bacteria was proposed to play crucial roles in the process. How to durably control souring with nitrate amendment, however, remains undiscovered. Herein, Gordonia sp. TD-4, a DNRA-driven sulfide-oxidizing bacterium, was used to elucidate the effects of bio-augmentation with DNRA bacteria on the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control. T

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has emerged as a sustainable wastewater nitrogen removal pathway; however, its full-scale application is impeded by slow autotrophic growth and environmental sensitivity. Iron-carbon (Fe-C) composites have been demonstrated to enhance performance by accelerating extracellular electron transfer (EET) and fostering robust aggregates. Departing from traditional descriptive summaries, this review establishes a multi-scale framework evaluating the cellular stress limits, material lifecycles, and techno-economic boundaries of Fe-C-anammox systems. A systematic
