HIST1H1T encodes H1T, a testicular variant of histone H1, which is expressed during spermatogenesis especially in primary spermatocytes and facilitates histone to protamine exchanges during maturation of spermatozoa. The goal of the conducted research was to evaluate four genetic variations of HIST1H1T in men with nonobstructive azoospermia. This case-control study was conducted among a total number of 200 men, including 100 nonobstructive azoospermic (NOA) infertile men. In this study, three single-nucleotide polymorphisms, including c.-54C>T (rs72834678), c.-912A>C (rs707892) and c.-947A>G (

Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is the most severe form of male infertility, defined by lack of spermatozoa in the ejaculate caused by impaired spermatogenesis. The chance of biological fatherhood of these men has been improved since the introduction of microdissection testicular sperm extraction (MD-TESE) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection. A thorough patient evaluation preoperatively is essential to recognize any underlying conditions, and to assist in patient counseling on the sperm recovery rate and pregnancy results. This review article summarizes the present data on MD-TESE

Chromosomal abnormalities are common in patients with oligozoospermia or azoospermia. We report the case of a 32-year patient, with male phenotype, and without hormonal or morphological abnormalities, with a severely reduced spermatogenesis. It was revealed a 45,X/46,XY gonadal dysgenesis. We have reviewed the various problems inherent in the discovery of this rare gonadal dysgenesis, including genetic, cancer and fertility risks.

The objective of the present study was to determine the frequency of somatic chromosomal anomalies and Y chromosomal microdeletions (azoospermia factor genes, AZF) in infertile males who seek assisted reproduction. These studies are very important because the assisted reproduction techniques (mainly intracytoplasmic sperm injection) bypass the natural selection process and some classical chromosomal abnormalities, microdeletions of AZF genes or some deleterious genic mutations could pass through generations. These genetic abnormalities can cause in the offspring of these patients male infertil

OBJECTIVES: We report 2 cases of Sertoli cell only syndrome and perform a bibliographic review.
METHODS: Clinical and pathologic study of 2 male patients 33 and 37-year-old respectively who presented with infertility.
RESULTS: Testicular biopsy, the most important diagnostic test in the study of infertile men, showed bilateral Sertoli cell only syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: The Sertoli cell only syndrome is an entity in which seminiferous tubules show a total absence of germ cells with Sertoli cells alone. Etiology is unknown in most cases. Testicular biopsy is performed in these azoospermic men t

Male infertility affects one in 10 men, yet we have seen few changes in the diagnostic tests recommended in the guidelines in the recent decade. Here we review the literature to identify newly available or emerging diagnostic tools in male infertility. From "-omics" (such as genomic, transcriptomics, or proteomics), tests of sperm function, advanced and innovated imaging technology, and integrating artificial intelligence, there are many potential areas where these diagnostic tests can improve patient care. These tools will hopefully allow to continue to unlock the underlying pathophysiology a

BACKGROUND: To date, there is a lack of studies conducted on males with secondary azoospermia as a potential cause of male infertility who had previously fathered children through natural conception. The current study aims to investigate the potential causes of secondary azoospermia as a presentation of male infertility as well as the prognostic factors that can impact sperm retrieval rate (SRR) while undergoing microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE).
RESULTS: Thirty two patients were recruited from the andrology outpatient clinic from August 2023 till January 2024. The mean

Testicular heat stress leads to impairment of spermatogenesis in mammals. Involved mechanism in this vulnerability to heat-induced injury remains unclear, and research is being conducted to find an approach to reverse spermatogenesis arrest caused by hyperthermia. Recently, different studies have utilized photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) therapy for the improvement of sperm criteria and fertility. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of PBMT on the improvement of spermatogenesis in mouse models of hyperthermia-induced azoospermia. A total of 32 male NMRI mice were equally divided into fo

Spermatogenic arrest is a severe form of non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), which occurs in 10-15% of infertile men. Interruption in spermatogenic progression at premeiotic, meiotic, or postmeiotic stage can lead to arrest in men with NOA. Recent studies have intensively focused on defining genetic variants underlying these spermatogenic arrests by making genome/exome sequencing. A number of variants were discovered in the genes involving in mitosis, meiosis, germline differentiation and other basic cellular events. Herein, defined variants in NOA cases with spermatogenic arrests and created k

The epididymis is a common site of obstruction in obstructive azoospermia (OA). Vasoepididymostomy has become an important method for the treatment of epididymal OA since 2000. There are two challenges in classic microscopic vasoepididymostomy. First, anastomosis of the vas deferens and epididymis is performed with double-needle sutures. However, there is a lack of good-quality and cost-effective double-needle sutures in China, which leads to increased difficulty and poor success rates of anastomosis. Second, the separation of the vas deferens does not retain vasculature, although the vas defe

Infertility affects 10%-20% of the population in most countries, with approximately half of those cases resulting from male infertility. Although millions of infertile men are able to have children with the assistance of reproductive technology, individuals with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) syndrome are unable to do so because they lack functional sperm. Therefore, some other strategies for infertile NOA men are still urgently needed. Our current study uses an NOA-like mouse model to optimize microinjection and a subsequent electroporation method to test potential treatment strategies. We

BACKGROUND Legionella infection is a common cause of atypical pneumonia, known as Legionnaires' disease when infection extends to extrapulmonary involvement, which often leads to hospitalization. The triad of Legionella pneumonia, rhabdomyolysis, and renal failure displays a rare yet fatal complication without prompt management. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 62-year-old man with no significant medical history who developed Legionnaires' disease with severely elevated creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) of 9614 mcg/L, consistent with rhabdomyolysis. He experienced severe headache, anorexia, and hema

Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is the most severe form of male infertility owing to the absence of sperm during ejaculation as a result of failed spermatogenesis. The molecular mechanisms of NOA have not been well studied. Here, we revealed the dysregulated differentially expressed genes in NOA and related signaling pathways or biological processes. Cluster features of biological processes include spermatogenesis, fertilization, cilium movement, penetration of zona pellucida, sperm chromatin condensation, and being significantly enriched metabolic pathways in proximal tubule bicarbonate rec

Many studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) play vital roles during the spermatogenesis. However, little is known about the altered miRNA profiles of testicular tissues in nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA). Using microarray technology, the miRNA expression profiles of testicular biopsies from patients with NOA and of normal testicular tissues were determined. Bioinformatics analyses were conducted to predict the enriched biological processes and functions of identified miRNAs. The microarray data were validated by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), the r

Cryptorchidism is one of the most frequent causes of nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA) in adulthood. Although it is well known that spermatogenesis is more impaired in bilateral than in unilateral cryptorchidism, previous studies have only described small cohorts or inhomogeneous population. Consequently, we analyzed a cohort of 225 men with only a history of cryptorchidism as sole etiopathogenetic factor for NOA, and compared testicular sperm extraction (TESE) outcomes between men with bilateral versus unilateral cryptorchidism. Our results show no difference in follicle-stimulating hormone (F
