The biodegradation of N2O by a non-acclimated secondary activated sludge in the presence of O2 was studied. Batch tests with a headspace containing an initial N2O concentration of ∼400 mg m(-3) (∼200 ppmv) and initial O2 gas concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 21% were investigated. The effect of O2 on the biokinetic parameters qmax (maximum specific N2O uptake rate) and KS (half-saturation constant), as well as on the bacterial population structure, was evaluated. A complete N2O removal was recorded in the presence of up to 2% O2, while O2 at 5% and 21% mediated inhibitions of 37% and 95% in

This study addresses a significant research gap in understanding the impacts of captivity on the bacteriome and physiology of saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus). Despite their ecological and cultural significance, crocodilians are a taxon that remains underexplored in microbiome research. We investigated cloacal bacteriome samples from both wild and captive populations to identify compositional and functional differences resulting from captivity. Our findings reveal significant alterations in bacterial diversity and community structure in captive crocodiles, with notable shifts at both

BACKGROUND: Kanamycin, an aminoglycoside, is an effective broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent against bacterial infections. However, the clinical efficacy of aminoglycosides has been overshadowed by the emergence of resistance mechanisms involving enzyme-mediated covalent modifications. Aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs) inactivate aminoglycosides via AMP group transfer. Elucidating their molecular mechanisms and identifying effective inhibitors are critical for combating antimicrobial resistance.
METHODS: Exiguobacterium sp. PL221A was isolated from hospital sewage under selection

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals with celiac disease (CD), non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), show overlapping clinical symptoms and experience gut dysbiosis. A limited number of studies so far compared the gut microbiota among these intestinal conditions. This study aimed to investigate the similarities in the gut microbiota among patients with CD, NCWS, and IBS in comparison to healthy controls (HC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, in total 72 adult subjects, including CD (n = 15), NCWS (n = 12), IBS (n = 30), and HC (n = 15) were recr

Abatement of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure by composting has attracted attention. This study investigated the effect of adding magnesium-modified biochar (MBC) on ARGs and microbial communities in chicken manure composting. Twelve genes for tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides, and mobile genetic elements were measured in the compost pile. The results showed that after 45 days of the composting, the treatment groups of MBC had longer high temperature periods, significantly higher germination indices (GI) and lower phytotoxicity. There were four major dominant ph

BACKGROUND: Human microbiome dysbiosis is related to various human diseases, and identifying robust and consistent biomarkers that apply in different populations is a key challenge. This challenge arises when identifying key microbial markers of childhood caries.
METHODS: We analyzed unstimulated saliva and supragingival plaque samples from children of different ages and sexes, performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and sought to identify whether consistent markers exist among subpopulations by using a multivariate linear regression model.
RESULTS: We found that Acinetobacter and Clostridiales

Changes in the intestinal microbiota are known to occur in constipated patients. Dietary fiber restriction presents obstacles to appropriate defecation and affects fecal properties, but the relationship between fecal microbiota and fecal morphological properties remains obscure. Therefore, we examined the influence of fiber diets on the fecal microbiome and properties in rats, and the effectiveness of the Japanese traditional medicine Junchoto (JCT) in rats with fiber deficit-induced constipation. Rats were fed three different fiber diets with varying cellulose contents (0 %, FFD; 5 %, ND; 15

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is acquired during childhood and causes chronic gastritis that remains asymptomatic in most infected people. H. pylori alters the gastric microbiota and causes peptic ulcer disease. Evidence on the relationship between asymptomatic H. pylori infection and children's gut microbiota remains elusive.
AIM: We characterized the relationship between H. pylori infection and the intestinal microbiome of healthy children, adjusting for known inter-personal and environmental exposures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included stoo

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an acquired immune-mediated disorder of the neuromuscular junction that causes fluctuating skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue. Pediatric MG and adult MG have many different characteristics, and current MG diagnostic methods for children are not quite fit. Previous studies indicate that alterations in the gut microbiota may be associated with adult MG. However, it has not been determined whether the gut microbiota are altered in pediatric MG patients.
METHODS: Our study recruited 53 pediatric MG patients and 46 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (H

The gut microbiome (GMB), comprising the commensal microbial communities located in the gastrointestinal tract, has co-evolved in mammals to perform countless micro-ecosystem services to facilitate physiological functions. Because of the complex inter-relationship between mammals and their gut microbes, the number of studies addressing the role of the GMB on mammalian health is almost exclusively limited to human studies and model organisms. Furthermore, much of our knowledge of wildlife-GMB relationships is based on studies of colonic GMB communities derived from the feces of captive specimen

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial drugs are known to have effects on the human gut microbiota. We studied the long-term temporal relationship between several antimicrobial drug groups and the composition of the human gut microbiota determined in feces samples.
METHODS: Feces samples were obtained from a community-dwelling cohort of middle-aged and elderly individuals (Rotterdam Study). Bacterial DNA was isolated and sequenced using V3/V4 16 S ribosomal RNA sequencing (Illumina MiSeq). The time between the last prescription of several antimicrobial drug groups and the day of sampling was categorized

Methylmercury is a neurotoxin that bioaccumulates from seawater to high concentrations in marine fish, putting human and ecosystem health at risk. High methylmercury levels have been found in the oxic subsurface waters of all oceans, but only anaerobic microorganisms have been shown to efficiently produce methylmercury in anoxic environments. The microaerophilic nitrite-oxidizing bacteria Nitrospina have previously been suggested as possible mercury methylating bacteria in Antarctic sea ice. However, the microorganisms responsible for processing inorganic mercury into methylmercury in oxic sea

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome exerts extensive roles in metabolism of nutrients, pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals. Little has been known for the role of gut microbiota in regulating cholesterol and bile acids in association with gallstone formation. This study investigated the changes in the composition of gut microbiota in mice fed with lithogenic diet (LD).
METHODS: Adult male C57BL/6 J mice were fed with either lithogenic diet (1.25% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid) or chow diet as control for 56 days. The fecal microbiota were determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
RESULTS: LD led t

Using shotgun metagenomics of largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis) skin and paired pool water samples, we provide the first taxonomic and functional characterisation of a sawfish skin microbiome and assess its ecological distinctiveness, assembly, and resilience relative to the surrounding water column. The skin microbiome was strongly host-associated and compositionally distinct, with lower taxonomic richness than the water column but dominated by Bacillota, particularly spore-forming Bacilli. Functional profiling revealed genes associated with sporulation, dormancy, anaerobic metabolism, and

Plant species loss and nitrogen fertilization affect grassland biodiversity. However, their interactive effects on plant communities, soil properties, and the soil microbiome remain insufficiently understood. We analyzed how the removal of plant species, with and without urea addition, influenced plant diversity, soil properties, and soil bacterial communities in a Tibetan Plateau grassland. Continuous plant species removal and urea addition over seven years modified plant beta-diversity equally strong, while urea exerted a stronger negative effect on plant alpha-diversity. Both, plant species

Microbial communities drive the stabilisation of organic matter during manure storage; however, the combined influence of substrate origin and sudden rainfall occurrences on these communities remains poorly understood. For the first time in Cyprus, we investigated the effects of manure type (dairy cow vs. goat) and a drying-rainfall simulation pulse on the community composition, diversity, and functional potential during manure storage, using 16S rRNA metabarcoding and shotgun sequencing. Under dry conditions, substrate composition set the baseline, with the more structurally heterogeneous goa

Phenolamides in bee pollen exhibit notable bioactivities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a prevalent intestinal disorder, while the potential effects of phenolamides on UC remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects and mechanisms of phenolamide extract (PAE) from apricot bee pollen on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC in mice. Firstly, we analyzed the main compounds of PAE. Mice were treated with PAE (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg bw) both during the 7 days preceding 2.5% DSS induction and throughout the induction p

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) present in food waste pose a significant environmental and public health challenge, with anaerobic digestion emerging as a promising technology to reduce ARG abundance during waste treatment. In this study, we analyzed the resistomes in 64 anaerobic digestion sludge samples from seven full-scale food waste treatment facilities representing seven Chinese provinces. Across all facilities, a small core set of glycopeptide (van clusters), β-lactamase, aminoglycoside, and macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin genes accounted for most ARG abundance (70.3%), marking t

Microbial communities play essential roles in mediating plant defenses against insect pests. However, how host-associated microbiota and metabolites jointly respond to bark beetle infestation remains largely unexplored. Here, we integrated microbiome and metabolome profiling to elucidate how Pinus tabuliformis regulates its phloem and rhizosphere responses under varying levels of Dendroctonus valens infestation. Both bacterial and fungal diversity, as well as the relative abundance of dominant taxa such as Erwinia and Pseudoxanthomonas, shifted significantly with infestation intensity. Concurr
