Increased radiation from Chernobyl decreases the expression of red colouration in natural populations of bank voles (Myodes glareolus).

Pheomelanin is a pink to red version of melanin pigment deposited in skin and hair. Due to its bright colour, pheomelanin plays a crucial function in signalling, in particular sexual signalling. However, production of pheomelanin, as opposed to its dark alternative, eumelanin, bears costs in terms of consumption of antioxidants important for protection of DNA against naturally produced reactive oxidative species. Therefore, decreased expression of pheomelanin is expected in organisms exposed to severe oxidative stress such as that caused by exposure to chronic ionizing radiation. We tested if

Radiation-sensitive genetic prognostic model identifies individuals at risk for radiation resistance in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The advantages of radiotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) depend on the radiation sensitivity of the patient. Here, we established and verified radiological factor-related gene signature and built a prognostic risk model to predict whether radiotherapy would be beneficial. METHODS: Data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, Gene Expression Omnibus, and RadAtlas databases were subjected to LASSO regression, univariate COX regression, and multivariate COX regression analyses to integrate genomic and clinical information from patients with HNSCC. HNSCC radiation-relate

A systematic approach for successful repair of radiated and non-radiated ureteral injuries.

BACKGROUND: Successful ureteral reconstruction is challenging, particularly in radiated fields. We characterize and directly compare surgical outcomes in modern cohorts of radiated and non-radiated patients undergoing ureteral reconstruction utilizing a systematic approach to pre-operative assessment. We hypothesize that radiated patients will undergo more complex ureteral reconstructions and experience higher rates of surgical failure and complications compared to nonradiated patients. METHODS: Consecutive cases of ureteral reconstruction for acquired ureteral injury performed by a single su

Incidence and Severity of Myelosuppression With Palbociclib After Palliative Bone Radiation in Advanced Breast Cancer: A Single Center Experience and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Palbociclib is a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 inhibitor with a primary toxicity of myelosuppression, especially neutropenia, due to cytostatic CDK6 inhibition on bone marrow. Preclinical studies suggest palbociclib may enhance radiation toxicity, but this was only evaluated in limited case series of palliative radiotherapy and not specific to radiation targeting bony metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a single institution retrospective cohort study. We included female patients who initiated palbociclib for advanced breast cancer between 2015 and 2019. The primary expo

A quality assurance initiative targeting radiation exposure to neuroscience patients in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with a primary neurologic disorder often receive multiple radiation-based diagnostic studies of the head and neck. Although radiation exposure puts them at risk of intracranial and neck tumors, the amount of radiation received is largely unknown. METHODS: We sought to accurately collect cumulative radiation exposure data from radiation-based studies in a retrospective cohort of patients admitted to the neuroscience ICU (NICU) at a single institution. Radiation doses of studies were converted to estimated effective doses in mSv via

Elevated Radiation Exposure Associated With Above Surface Flat Detector Mini C-Arm Use.

Background: This study aims to test the hypothesis that: (1) radiation exposure is increased with the intended use of Flat Surface Image Intensifier (FSII) units above the operative surface compared with the traditional below-table configuration; (2) this differential increases in a dose-dependent manner; and (3) radiation exposure varies with body part and proximity to the radiation source. Methods: A surgeon mannequin was seated at a radiolucent hand table, positioned for volar distal radius plating. Thermoluminescent dosimeters measured exposure to the eyes, thyroid, chest, hand, and groin,

Highly Sensitive Detection of Ionizing Radiations by a Photoluminescent Uranyl Organic Framework.

Precise detection of low-dose X- and γ-radiations remains a challenge and is particularly important for studying biological effects under low-dose ionizing radiation, safety control in medical radiation treatment, survey of environmental radiation background, and monitoring cosmic radiations. We report here a photoluminescent uranium organic framework, whose photoluminescence intensity can be accurately correlated with the exposure dose of X- or γ-radiations. This allows for precise and instant detection of ionizing radiations down to the level of 10-4  Gy, representing a significant improveme

BACKGROUND: Spermatogenesis system is one of the most radiosensitive organs in the body. A usual therapeutic dose of radiation such as the conventional 2 Gy in each fraction of radiotherapy and lower doses seen in diagnostic radiology or a radiation disaster affect the process of spermatogenesis potently. Selenium and zinc are two important elements playing key roles in the development of sperms and also have radioprotective effects. OBJECTIVE: In this study aims to evaluate the radioprotective effect of zinc and selenium against radiation-induced mice testis injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In

Associations between fear of medical imaging radiation, risk perception, and patient decisional conflict: evidence from variable-centered and person-centered analyses.

BACKGROUND: Medical imaging examinations play an irreplaceable role in modern medical diagnosis; however, some patients experience decisional difficulties due to fear of radiation, potentially leading to examination delays or refusals that subsequently compromise timely disease diagnosis and treatment. The psychological mechanisms through which fear of medical imaging radiation influences patient decision-making processes remain unclear, and the heterogeneous characteristics of radiation fear manifestations across patient populations lack systematic investigation. METHODS: A cross-sectional s
