Leuconostoc species, which are the members of Streptococcaceae family, have recently been recognized as potential pathogens. They usually cause infections in patients with underlying disease, with venous catheters or previously treated with vancomycin. In this report, we have presented two cases of Leuconostoc bacteremia. The first case was a 42 years old male patient who was diagnosed to have colon adenocarcinoma. He had undergone colon, stomach and distal pancreas resection operation and had given chemotherapy. Blood and catheter cultures yielded methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to detect the risk of bacteremia from nasotracheal intubation in children undergoing dental treatment under general anesthesia.
METHODS: Two 10 ml blood samples were taken, the first as a baseline and the second within 30 s following the nasotracheal intubation. The samples were inoculated into 5 ml aerobic and 5 ml anaerobic blood culture bottles. Following incubation in an automated blood culture system, bacteria were identified by using conventional biochemical methods and commercial identification systems. Mc Nemar's test was used to assess the findin

Group G Streptococcus (GGS) can cause severe infections, including bacteremia. These organisms often express a surface protein homologous to the Streptococcus pyogenes M protein. We retrospectively studied the characteristics of patients from the Hadassah Medical Center with GGS bacteremia from 1989 to 2000. Ninety-four cases of GGS bacteremia were identified in 84 patients. The median age was 62 years, 54% were males, and 92% had underlying diseases (35% had a malignancy, and 35% had diabetes mellitus). The most frequent source for bacteremia was cellulitis (61%). emm typing of 56 available i

Bartonella quintana infections have recently reemerged, predominantly among the homeless populations in cities in both Europe and the United States. B. quintana can cause trench fever, endocarditis, and chronic bacteremia; the human body louse is the only known vector. Homeless people who presented to the emergency departments of University Hospital in Marseilles, France, were studied, as were those who had been admitted to other medical facilities in the city since 1 January 1997. Samples of blood and body lice were collected for culture for B. quintana and for serological testing. Bartonella

Three patients, two men aged 52 and 62 years and a woman aged 83 years, experienced non-specific flu-like symptoms for a few days but subsequently developed a complicated disease with multiple metastatic infections and endocarditis due to bacteraemia. Only the man aged 62 years had a port of entry, a finger wound. Two patients died. Community-acquired S. aureus bacteraemia is a much more serious disease than nosocomial bacteraemia. The community-acquired bacteraemia is characterised by the absence of a primary focus and non-specific flu-like symptoms in the beginning. This results in a long-du

Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteremia was diagnosed in 33 patients between June 1999 and November 2000 at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital-Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. Antimicrobial susceptibility and serotyping of the clinical isolates were performed. Pneumonia was diagnosed in 19 patients, primary bacteremia in 13, and meningitis in one. The most common serotypes were types 14, 3, and 23F. Fourteen (42.4%) isolates of S. pneumoniae were non-susceptible to penicillin. High antimicrobial resistance rates were found to erythromycin (81.9%), tetracycline (69.7%), clindamycin (69.7%), trimethoprim

OBJECTIVE: The licensure and use of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that is immunogenic in children who are younger than 2 years may affect the epidemiology of occult bacteremia. This study was conducted to determine the serotype prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from children with occult bacteremia and to document the proportion that would be covered by the recently licensed heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
METHODS: A cohort of 5901 children who were 2 to 24 months of age and had a temperature of >/=39.0 degrees C evaluated with a blood culture at an urban tertiary

The evaluation of nontoxic-appearing, young, febrile children has been a subject of considerable debate. Of young, nontoxic-appearing children aged 3 to 36 months with temperatures of 39 degrees C or more and no clear source, approximately 2% to 3% have occult bacteremia. Of these bacteremias, approximately 90% are caused by S. pneumoniae, 5% by nontyphoidal Salmonella sp., and 1% by N. meningitidis. Most children with occult pneumococcal bacteremia improve spontaneously, but approximately 25% of untreated patients have persistent bacteremia or develop new focal infections, including 3% to 6%

The Beta haemloytic streptococci (BHS) are well recognised human pathogens causing a variety of infections, including septicemia. It is important to ensure their isolation from clinical specimens by using optimum media. Moreover, since the different groups have different pathogenic potential, it is equally important to routinely serogroup them; this is emphasized here. Since, BHS are uniformly will greatly decrease morbidity and mortality due to BHS infection.

In a prospective study of bacteremia caused by organisms of the Streptococcus milleri group a total of 32 adult patients were observed over a seven-year period. These patients accounted for 1.6% of all patients diagnosed as having significant bacteremia and 17% of all cases of streptococcal (nonpneumococcal) bacteremia diagnosed during the study period. Only five patients had polymicrobic bacteremia. In 31 cases, a presumed origin of infection was identified, generally oral or gastrointestinal disease. There were only six cases of nosocomial acquisition. The most common presenting symptom was

Listeria monocytogenes has been recognized as an important pathogen in immunocompromised patients, but it has been rarely reported in Taiwan. We reviewed 13 cases of L. monocytogenes bacteremia at National Taiwan University Hospital over a 12-year period. All of the patients had underlying diseases. Fever was the most common presenting symptom, and neurologic signs were found in 6 patients. Most of the patients received penicillin G, ampicillin or piperacillin with an aminoglycoside. Corticosteroids were used in 9 of 13 patients. The overall mortality directly due to L. monocytogenes bacteremi

A case of bacteremia caused by a multiresistant strain of Capnocytophaga sputigena in a patient with hematological malignancy is described. The strain presented with a pattern of marked resistance to beta-lactams, with MICs of > 256 mg/liter for ampicillin, ticarcillin, piperacillin, cefazolin, and cefuroxime, 64 mg/liter for cefotaxime, and 32 mg/liter for ceftazidime. In addition, the MIC of ciprofloxacin was 16 mg/liter. Both of these groups of antimicrobial agents are frequently used in the empiric treatment of infections in immunocompromised patients. The appearance of resistant strains s

Osteomyelitis caused solely by an anaerobic organism is uncommon. We report a case of recurrent Clostridium bifermentans bacteremia resulting in metastatic osteomyelitis involving the sacrum, spine, and ribs. The emergence of resistance of this organism to imipenem and metronidazole is noteworthy because of the usual susceptibility of clostridial species to these antibiotics.

Group-C beta-hemolytic streptococci (GCBHS) is an uncommon cause of bacteremia. In a 5-year period, GCBHS accounted for 0.28% of positive blood cultures and 0.35% of bacteremias documented at our hospital. The incidence of GCBHS bacteremia was 0.05 episodes per 1000 admissions. We were able to analyze clinical data of 10 of the 13 patients with GCBHS bacteremias. All but one were adults with significant underlying diseases, and seven episodes were community acquired. The skin was the portal of entry in only one case. Clinical syndromes included primary bacteremia (four cases), pneumonia (two c

In order to define the circumstances of occurrence, clinical presentation and prognostic factors of streptococcal bacteremia in neutropenic patients, we retrospectively reviewed 60 cases of streptococcal bacteremia following intensive chemotherapy for acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Causative streptococcal species included streptococcus viridans (42 cases), streptococcus faecalis (12), streptococcus pneumoniae (4) and other streptococci (2). All patients were febrile and 32% presented diffuse pneumopathy with freq

Antimicrobial treatment of nontyphoidal Salmonella gastroenteritis is usually advocated for infants younger than 3 months of age based on published data showing that infants in this age group are more prone to have bacteremia and develop extraintestinal focal infections. A review of nontyphoidal Salmonella isolates from our institution from January, 1981, through March, 1988, was undertaken to assess the role of age and specific serovar on the incidence of bacteremia. Two hundred twenty isolates were identified: one cerebrospinal fluid, 14 blood and 205 stool. The mean age of patients with bac
