Gastrointestinal parasites circulating in wild boars from central Italy and molecular characterization of Balantioides coli, Blastocystis sp. and Enterocytozoon bieneusi.

The growing abundance and geographic spread of wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Europe have heightened concerns about their contribution to the transmission of parasites of zoonotic and veterinary importance. This study investigated the occurrence and zoonotic potential of gastrointestinal parasites in 46 wild boars sampled during the 2023 hunting season in Italy. Copromicroscopic analyses revealed that 47.8% of animals were positive for at least one parasite taxon, with frequent coinfections. Thirteen taxa were identified by microscopy, including protozoans (Entamoeba coli, Iodamoeba but

Development and application of a novel beta-tubulin genotyping tool reveals host-specific transmission cluster in Balantioides coli.

Balantioides coli is a zoonotic ciliated protozoan that infects humans and other mammals. Conventional and ITS-based genotyping approaches have limitations that hinder precise molecular epidemiological investigations. The objective of this study was to develop a new β-tubulin gene-based approach to enhance the detection and genotyping of B. coli. We performed single-cell isolation and whole-genome sequencing on two B. coli isolates from pigs and two from guinea pigs. We then used the β-tubulin gene sequences to design PCR primers for the new genotyping assay. We validated the assay using 56 IT

Diversity and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in seven non-human primates of the Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire.

Parasites and infectious diseases are well-known threats to primate populations. The main objective of this study was to provide baseline data on fecal parasites in the cercopithecid monkeys inhabiting Côte d'Ivoire's Taï National Park. Seven of eight cercopithecid species present in the park were sampled: Cercopithecus diana, Cercopithecus campbelli, Cercopithecus petaurista, Procolobus badius, Procolobus verus, Colobus polykomos, and Cercocebus atys. We collected 3142 monkey stool samples between November 2009 and December 2010. Stool samples were processed by direct wet mount examination, f

The prevailing infection of Schistosoma japonicum and other zoonotic parasites in bubaline reservoir hosts in the ricefield of lake ecosystem: the case of Lake Mainit, Philippines.

Bovines are important reservoir hosts of schistosomiasis, placing humans and animals in rice fields areas at risk of infection. This study reported the prevailing infection of zoonotic parasites from bovine feces in the rice fields adjacent to Lake Mainit, Philippines. Formalin Ethyl Acetate Sedimentation was performed on 124 bovine fecal samples from rice fields and documented eggs and cysts from seven parasites: Schistosoma japonicum, Fasciola gigantica, Ascaris sp., Strongyloides sp., Balantidium coli, coccidian oocyst and a hookworm species. Among these parasites, F. gigantica harboured th

The prevalence and diversity of intestinal parasitic infections in humans and domestic animals in a rural Cambodian village.

In Cambodia, intestinal parasitic infections are prevalent in humans and particularly in children. Yet, information on potentially zoonotic parasites in animal reservoir hosts is lacking. In May 2012, faecal samples from 218 humans, 94 dogs and 76 pigs were collected from 67 households in Dong village, Preah Vihear province, Cambodia. Faecal samples were examined microscopically using sodium nitrate and zinc sulphate flotation methods, the Baermann method, Koga Agar plate culture, formalin-ether concentration technique and Kato Katz technique. PCR was used to confirm hookworm, Ascaris spp., Gi

Intestinal manifestations of experimental SIV-infection in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta): a histological and ultrastructural study.

Intestinal lesions were studied in 32 rhesus monkeys experimentally infected with different strains of simian immunodeficiency virus SIVmac (251/32H, 251/32H-SPL and 251/MPBL) by light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A spectrum of primary and secondary manifestations of SIV-infection were detected. Primary changes included 'SIV-enteropathy' in 12 monkeys and virus-induced syncytial giant cell formation (GCF) of the intestine in two animals. A primary virus-induced enteropathy occurred both as only histologically visible 'SIV-enteropathy' and as 'AIDS-enteropathy' acc

Silent shedding of zoonotic enteric protozoa in domestic pigs for human consumption in selected farms in the Iberian Peninsula.

Enteric protozoa such as Balantioides coli, Giardia duodenalis, and Cryptosporidium scrofarum are of veterinary importance and may pose occupational exposure risks, yet data on their occurrence in pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) raised for human consumption in the Iberian Peninsula are limited. A total of 400 stool samples were collected at a slaughterhouse in northern Portugal, originating from farms in Portugal (n = 200) and Spain (n = 200), and screened by PCR and qPCR. B. coli was highly prevalent in both countries (Portugal: 93%, Spain: 89.5%), with variant B predominating and variant A dete

Prevalence and molecular characterisation of Balantioides coli in pigs raised in Italy.

Balantioides coli is the only ciliated protist of both human and veterinary interest and colonises the large intestine of several hosts, including humans and pigs. Given the scarcity of data on B. coli circulation in pigs in Italy, a study was planned to record its prevalence and genetic types and compare the analytical sensitivity of two copromicroscopic techniques. For this purpose, 880 faecal samples were collected from pigs raised in 22 farms located in northern Italy and analysed with the sedimentation and the FLOTAC® dual technique, employing sodium chloride and zinc sulphate flotation s

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium infections in pigs in Aragón (northeastern Spain).

Faecal samples from 620 pigs randomly selected from 27 farms throughout Aragón were examined to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infections. Detection of oocysts was performed using the ethyl-acetate stool concentration method and the modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique. Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were identified in 136 (21.9%) pigs from 21 (77.8%) farms. Infected animals ranged from 1 to 6 months old and oocysts were not detected in suckling piglets or adults. Infection rates were significantly higher in weaned, 1-2 month old piglets (59.2%) than in fattening, 2-6 month old pigs (

Pavement parasites: a preliminary environmental survey of cat parasites in Klang Valley public housing areas.

Due to their proximity and association, cats play a dual role in humans' lives, serving as common companion animals as well as strays. However, they also serve as a significant reservoir for various parasites, including gastrointestinal (GI) parasites. The global prevalence of GI parasites in cats is relatively high, raising concerns about their potential transmission to humans and the risk of causing diseases. Cat droppings are frequently found contaminating the environment and, admittedly, more often in low-income housing areas, posing additional risks to this marginalised group. Therefore,

Emerging protozoal pathogens in India: How prepared are we to face the threat?

Emerging protozoal pathogens have become a major threat to human health. The number of protozoal pathogens causing human disease has been on the rise since the last two to three decades. Significant increase in the number of immunocompromised people, increase in international travel, deforestation, and widespread urban dwellings are some of the factors contributing to this changing epidemiology of protozoal diseases. Apart from Naegleria and Acanthamoeba, other free-living amoebae like Balamuthia and Sappinia are being reported to cause meningoencephalitis in humans. Plasmodium knowlesi, a zoo

Diversity and Prevalence of Helminths and Protozoa Among Pregnant Women in Tropical Ecuador: Implications for Chemotherapy.

Deworming for pregnant women using a single dose of albendazole or mebendazole is recommended by the WHO in areas where the baseline prevalence of hookworm and/or trichuriasis is >20%. However, other helminths and protozoa infecting pregnant women are not affected by these drugs and dosages. To assess the prevalence and diversity of intestinal helminth and protozoan infections, we analyzed stool samples from pregnant women recently enrolled into a birth cohort, along a rural-urban gradient in northern coastal Ecuador from 2019 to 2022. Participants provided a stool sample in their third trimes
