The assessment of arterial baroreflex function in cardiovascular diseases requires quantitative evaluation of dynamic and static baroreflex properties because of the frequent modulation of baroreflex properties with unstable hemodynamics. The purpose of this study was to identify the dynamic baroreflex properties from transient changes of step pressure inputs with background noise during a short-duration baroreflex test in anesthetized rabbits with isolated carotid sinuses, using a modified wavelet-based time-frequency analysis. The proposed analysis was able to identify the transfer function

We report a patient of baroreflex failure two years after bilateral cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) revascularization. A 76-year-old hypertensive man was admitted to our hospital after suffering multiple syncopal events for the past 2 years prior to admission. He received bilateral surgical and endovascular revascularization for stenotic lesions of the ICA orifices 4 years ago. Intervention consisted of carotid endarterectomy and carotid stenting for the right and left ICAs, respectively. Head T2-weighted magnetic resonance images demonstrated multiple high intensity signals in the basa

Recent studies indicate that suppression of renal sympathetic nerve activity and attendant increments in renal excretory function are sustained baroreflex-mediated responses in hypertensive animals. Given the central role of the kidneys in long-term regulation of arterial pressure, we hypothesized that the chronic blood pressure-lowering effects of the baroreflex are critically dependent on intact renal innervation. This hypothesis was tested in 6 dogs by bilaterally activating the carotid baroreflex electrically for 7 days before and after bilateral renal denervation. Before renal denervation

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of carotid endarterectomy on blood pressure homeostasis and baroreflex function, with particular reference to the presence or absence of significant contralateral carotid artery disease, we conducted a prospective study in 80 patients with symptomatic extracranial carotid disease undergoing carotid endarterectomy in a regional teaching hospital over 2 years.
METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups: the control group (n = 37) had no significant contralateral carotid disease; patients in the diseased group (n = 23) had either >70% stenosis or occlusion of

We sought to determine the dynamic relationship between carotid baroreflex (CBR)-mediated control and local control of the skeletal muscle vasculature during dynamic exercise. In 12 subjects (18-35 years old), oscillatory neck pressure (NP, +40 mmHg) was applied at 0.1 Hz (i.e. 5 s on, 5 s off) for 5 min to determine the degree of CBR control over heart rate (HR), arterial blood pressure (ABP), muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), femoral blood velocity and skeletal muscle tissue oxygenation at rest and during 7 W dynamic knee-extension exercise. Skeletal muscle tissue oxygenation measure

INTRODUCTION: The arterial baroreflex operates in physiological conditions. It induces sympathetic and vagal activity modulation resulting in arterial tone and heart rate changes. These appropriate responses limit blood pressure fluctuations and blood pressure is therefore regulated since the baroreflex constantly buffers the changes.
EXEGESIS: Bilateral carotid body tumor excision resulted in excessive fluctuations of blood pressure. Indices of spontaneous baroreflex activity were markedly altered in the patient described herein.
CONCLUSION: The excessive fluctuations of blood pressure due

This investigation was designed to determine central command's role on carotid baroreflex (CBR) resetting during exercise. Nine volunteer subjects performed static and rhythmic handgrip exercise at 30 and 40% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), respectively, before and after partial axillary neural blockade. Stimulus-response curves were developed using the neck pressure-neck suction technique and a rapid pulse train protocol (+40 to -80 Torr). Regional anesthesia resulted in a significant reduction in MVC. Heart rate (HR) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were used as indexes of centra

BACKGROUND: We identified a family with a monogenic syndrome of hypertension, brachydactyly, and neurovascular contact of the brain stem. Neurovascular contact of the ventrolateral medulla may lead to arterial hypertension by interfering with baroreflex function.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In 5 patients with monogenic hypertension (18 to 34 years old), we conducted detailed autonomic function tests. Blood pressure during complete ganglionic blockade was 134+/-4.9/82+/-4.1 mm Hg and 90+/-6/49+/-2.4 mm Hg in patients and in control subjects, respectively. During ganglionic blockade, plasma vasopressi

The following experiments were done to determine whether changes in baroreflex sensitivity evoked by cervical vagus nerve stimulation are due to sympathoexcitation mediated by the parabrachial nucleus. The relative contribution of cardiopulmonary and general gastric afferents within the cervical vagus nerve to the depression in baroreflex sensitivity are also investigated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats anesthetized with thiobutabarbital sodium (50 mg/kg) were instrumented to measure blood pressure and heart rate or for the continuous monitoring of renal sympathetic nerve activity. Baroreflex sensit

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that the influence of circulating vasopressin (AVP) on the arterial baroreflex control of renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and heart rate (HR) changes during development. To test this hypothesis, we studied arterial baroreflex-mediated control of HR and RSNA in the presence of increasing plasma levels of AVP in conscious, chronically instrumented fetal, newborn, and adult sheep. In fetal and newborn sheep, increasing plasma AVP levels (from < 10 to > 200 microU/ml) increased resting levels of mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and d

To determine whether inhibition of the brain renin-angiotensin system would affect baroreflexes similarly in old rats of different strains, we compared 24-month-old male Fischer 344 and Sprague-Dawley rats. Baroreflex sensitivity was tested while the rats were awake by recording reflex heart rate responses elicited as blood pressure was elevated with phenylephrine or lowered with sodium nitroprusside. Sprague-Dawley rats had higher blood pressures and lower heart rates initially. Chronic infusion of enalapril, a converting enzyme inhibitor, into a lateral cerebral ventricle (ICV) for two weeks

We recently reported that intravenous vasopressin in anesthetized rabbits facilitates baroreflex inhibition of lumbar sympathetic nerve activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible sites of this facilitation. We found that intravenous infusion of vasopressin (16-32 mU X kg-1 X min-1) caused greater inhibition of lumbar sympathetic nerve activity than did phenylephrine for a given increase in aortic baroreceptor activity, suggesting a "central" action of vasopressin. A central action was supported also by the observation that the carotid baroreflex inhibition of lumbar symp

The sensitivity of baroreflex bradycardia and tachycardia was determined in fourteen patients with Chagas' disease who seemed to be normal with respect to cardiac autonomic control evaluated in terms of heart rate responses to the conventional atropinization and Valsalva maneuver tests. Eleven normal subjects were studied for comparison. Baroreflex sensitivity was determined by relating the beat-to-beat pulse intervals to systolic pressure values during transient phenylephrine- and amyl nitrite-induced changes in arterial pressure. Chagasic patients showed mean bradycardia sensitivity (10.1 +/

Effects of carotid sinus pressure on arterial pressure, atrial rate, and ventricular rate were examined in anesthetized normal dogs and in dogs with chronic complete A-V block. Change in arterial pressure per mmHg change in sinus pressure was 0.8 plus or minus 0.2 mmHg for controls but increased (P is less than 0.001) to 1.6 plus or minus 0.1 mmHg in A-V blocked dogs. Arterial pressure was 140-145 mmHg at low sinus pressure in both groups, but at high sinus pressure arterial pressure was significantly lower in A-V blocked dogs (44 plus or minus 4 mmHg) than in controls (92 plus or minus 8 mmHg

One of the most important features of prolonged weightlessness is a progressive impairment of muscular function. Physiological modifications related to exposure to microgravity, e.g. altered blood volume distribution, impaired myocardial function, and a decrease in stroke volume, in addition to the alterations in muscular function, contribute to the reduced physical exercise capacity commonly reported after space flight. The interplay between muscular, hemodynamic and body fluid modifications occurring in microgravity could alter also the neural mechanisms of cardiovascular regulation both in

A randomized, controlled trial of baroreflex activation therapy (BAT) in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction demonstrated that BAT was safe and significantly improved patient-centered symptomatic outcomes, increasing exercise capacity, improving quality of life, decreasing n-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and improving functional class. BAT was approved by the FDA for improvement of symptoms of heart failure for patients who remain symptomatic despite treatment with guideline-directed management, are New York Heart Association Class III or Class II (

The renal baroreflex describes the dose-dependent relation between renal pressure and renin release. Former studies have approximated this relation through animal experiments, but the exact shape of the response curve and its alteration by hypertension remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the renal baroreflex in healthy and hypertensive animals. Studies retrieved from Pubmed and Embase were screened according to predefined criteria. Data regarding study design and outcome data were extracted, and risk of bias was assessed. Dose-response meta-analysis

BACKGROUND: The objective of our case-control study was to evaluate the determinants of childhood cardio-vagal baroreflex failure and exaggerated orthostatic pressor response, which are risk factors for subsequent hypertension.
METHODS: Four groups of children were matched for sex and age: 12 with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (autonomic nervous system dysfunction), 12 with chronic kidney disease (frequently abnormal blood pressure [BP]), 12 with sickle cell disease (frequently abnormal orthostatic BP), and 24 control children (preterm birth with normal BP). The children underwe

The cardiac baroreflex is an autonomic neural mechanism involved in the modulation of the cardiovascular system. It influences the heart rate and peripheral vascular resistance to preserve arterial blood pressure within a narrow variation range. This mechanism is mainly controlled by medullary nuclei located in the brain stem. However, supramedullary areas, such as the ventral portion of medial prefrontal cortex (vMPFC), are also involved. Particularly, the glutamatergic NMDA/NO pathway in the vMPFC can facilitate baroreflex bradycardic and tachycardic responses. In addition, cannabinoid recep

The arterial baroreflex (BR) is an important neural mechanism for the stabilization of arterial pressure (AP). It is known that the insular cortex (IC) and other parts of the central autonomic network (CAN) are able to modulate the BR arc, altering baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). In addition, the sensitivity of the BR changes under the influence of hormones, in particular glucocorticoids (GCs). It has been suggested that GCs may influence BRS by altering the ability of the IC to modulate the BR. This hypothesis has been tested in experiments on rats anesthetized with urethane. It was found that
