The human papillomavirus (HPV) is sexually transmitted and can infect oral, genital, and anal sites in the human epithelium. Here, we develop a multisite transmission model that includes autoinoculation to study HPV and other multisite diseases. Under a homogeneous-contacts assumption, we analyze the basic reproduction number R0, as well as type and target reproduction numbers, for a two-site model. In particular, we find that R0 occupies a space between taking the maximum of next generation matrix terms for same site transmission and taking the geometric average of cross-site transmission ter

Most hosts harbor multiple pathogens at the same time in disease epidemiology. Multiple pathogens have the potential for interaction resulting in negative impacts on host fitness or alterations in pathogen transmission dynamics. In this paper we develop a mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV-malaria coinfection. Additionally, we extended our model to examine the role treatment (of malaria and HIV) plays in altering populations' dynamics. Our model consists of 13 interlinked equations which allow us to explore multiple aspects of HIV-malaria transmission and treatment. We perform q

Trachoma programs have dramatically reduced the prevalence of the ocular chlamydia that cause the disease. Some have hypothesized that immunity to the infection may be reduced because of program success in reducing the incidence of infection, and transmission may then increase. Longitudinal studies of multiple communities would be necessary to test this hypothesis. Here, we quantify transmission using an estimated basic reproduction number based on 32 communities during the first, second, and third years of an antibiotic treatment program. We found that there is little to no increase in the ba

Canine vaccination has been successful in controlling rabies in diverse settings worldwide. However, concerns remain that coverage levels which have previously been sufficient might be insufficient in systems where transmission occurs both between and within populations of domestic dogs and other carnivores. To evaluate the effectiveness of vaccination targeted at domestic dogs when wildlife also contributes to transmission, we applied a next-generation matrix model based on contract tracing data from the Ngorongoro and Serengeti Districts in northwest Tanzania. We calculated corresponding val

This paper is devoted to the mathematical analysis of a reaction and diffusion model for Lyme disease. In the case of a bounded spatial habitat, we obtain the global stability of either disease-free or endemic steady state in terms of the basic reproduction number R₀. In the case of an unbounded spatial habitat, we establish the existence of the spreading speed of the disease and its coincidence with the minimal wave speed for traveling fronts. Our analytic results show that R₀ is a threshold value for the global dynamics and that the spreading speed is linearly determinate.

A general compartmental model for cholera is formulated that incorporates two pathways of transmission, namely direct and indirect via contaminated water. Non-linear incidence, multiple stages of infection and multiple states of the pathogen are included, thus the model includes and extends cholera models in the literature. The model is analyzed by determining a basic reproduction number R0 and proving, by using Lyapunov functions and a graph-theoretic result based on Kirchhoff's Matrix Tree Theorem, that it determines a sharp threshold. If R0≤1, then cholera dies out; whereas if R0>1, then th

Based on our deterministic models for cholera epidemics, we propose a stochastic model for cholera epidemics to incorporate environmental fluctuations which is a nonlinear system of Itô stochastic differential equations. We conduct an asymptotical analysis of dynamical behaviors for the model. The basic stochastic reproduction value R s is defined in terms of the basic reproduction number R 0 for the corresponding deterministic model and noise intensities. The basic stochastic reproduction value determines the dynamical patterns of the stochastic model. When R s < 1 , the cholera infectio

In order to investigate how the movement of dogs affects the geographically inter-provincial spread of rabies in Mainland China, we propose a multi-patch model to describe the transmission dynamics of rabies between dogs and humans, in which each province is regarded as a patch. In each patch the submodel consists of susceptible, exposed, infectious, and vaccinated subpopulations of both dogs and humans and describes the spread of rabies among dogs and from infectious dogs to humans. The existence of the disease-free equilibrium is discussed, the basic reproduction number is calculated, and th

This paper presents an innovative SITR(H)-SEI(M) model designed to analyze and understand the dynamics of dengue fever transmission. The model offers an accurate analysis of disease spread and is applied to recent health data from multiple countries, including Singapore, Costa Rica, Yemen, and India. We investigate the existence, uniqueness, and stability of solutions, and thoroughly examine the basic reproduction number, equilibrium points, and their stability effects. The results show that the disease-free equilibrium is stable when the basic reproduction number is below one, indicating cont

Ebola virus disease (EVD) has erupted many times in some zones since it was first found in 1976. The 2014 EVD outbreak in West Africa is the largest ever, which has caused a large number of deaths and the most serious country is Liberia during the outbreak period. Based on the data released by World Health Organization and the actual transmission situations, we investigate the impact of different transmission routes on the EVD outbreak in Liberia and estimate the basic reproduction number R0 = 2.012 in the absence of effective control measures. Through sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, we

To understand how extracellular potassium ions influence both anti-tumor immunity and virotherapy in cancer progression, we construct two mathematical models informed by our experimental results. For the tumor immune system, our analysis shows a high concentration of extracellular potassium ions diminishes the killing rate of tumor cells by immune cells. Our model confirms that the stimulation coefficient of immune cells by tumor cells remains a crucial parameter in the presence of extracellular potassium ions, which largely controls the overall tumor growth. For virotherapy, we obtain a formu

Scientific inquiry about the transmissibility of infectious diseases is largely based on the basic reproduction number ([Formula: see text]) and its derivations. This paper describes a mechanism overlooked in most conventional analyses, in which a disease can endogenously "compete" with itself when multiple infectious individuals race to infect the same susceptible individual, thereby reducing the effective reproductive rate. Utilizing an empirically calibrated network epidemiological model of wild-type COVID-19 diffusion in its early pandemic, we show that the mechanism would be expected to r

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the impact of public health and social measures (PHSMs) on influenza transmission is crucial for developing effective influenza prevention and control strategies.
METHODS: This modeling study analyzed data from 2017 to 2022, in Beijing, China. Weekly influenza positive rate and influenza-like rate were incorporated to quantify the community-level influenza activities. The effective reproduction number and influenza attack rate were estimated using a branching process model and a transmission dynamics model, respectively. The impact of PHSMs was quantified through l

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) remains a significant global health challenge, with control efforts complicated by the emergence of drug resistance and limitations in healthcare capacity. This study develops and analyzes a more realistic epidemiological model to investigate these complex dynamics and identify optimal intervention strategies. We formulate a novel six-compartment fractional-order model using the Caputo derivative, which incorporates memory effects, drug resistance, vertical transmission, and a crucial non-linear saturated treatment function to reflect healthcare system limitations. The

Understanding the mechanisms responsible for different clinical outcomes following hepatitis B infection requires a systems investigation of dynamical interactions between the virus and the immune system. To help elucidate mechanisms of protection and those responsible from transition from acute to chronic disease, we developed a deterministic mathematical model of hepatitis B infection that accounts for cytotoxic immune responses resulting in infected cell death, non-cytotoxic immune responses resulting in infected cell cure and protective immunity from reinfection, and cell proliferation. We

In this study, we present a unified mathematical model for tuberculosis (TB) that integrates key interventions: Mask use and media campaigns to raise community awareness and promote vaccine booster uptake. The model also incorporates slow-fast disease progression and limited treatment capacity. A mathematical analysis was conducted to determine the existence and stability of equilibrium points. From the mathematical analysis on the stability criteria of the TB-free equilibrium point, we show that TB can be eradicated if the basic reproduction number is below one. However, due to insufficient t

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health threat, particularly in the regions with diverse age-specific transmission patterns and increasing drug resistance. To address these challenges, this study establishes a dual-strain model that incorporates both drug-resistant and drug-sensitive strains to investigate how these strains contribute to the dynamics of TB transmission. By integrating age heterogeneity, social interactions, and seasonal variations, the model offers a detailed depiction of TB transmission process, highlighting its inherent complexity across various population grou

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global public health issue. We offer a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of HBV, which can be successfully controlled with vaccine and treatment. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes a significantly more severe and protracted disease compared to hepatitis A. While it initially presents as an acute disease, in approximately 5 to 10% of cases, it can develop into a chronic disease that causes permanent damage to the liver. The hepatitis B virus can remain active outside the body for at least seven days. If the virus penetrates an individual's body without im

Infectious diseases have caused enormous disasters in human society, and asymptomatic carriers are an important challenge in our epidemic prevention and control process. Nucleic acid testing has played an important role in rapid testing for asymptomatic individuals. How to carry out nucleic acid testing in a scientific manner is a practical problem encountered in normal production and life. Based on the real COVID-19 epidemic data from Shanghai, we established a susceptible-exposed-infected-asymptomatic-recovered-death (SEIARD) dynamic model. The least squares method was used to fit the data a

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever is endemic in Africa and the Americas, occurring in urban or sylvatic environments. The infection presents varying symptoms, with high case-fatality among severe cases. In 2016, Brazil had sylvatic yellow fever outbreaks with more than 11 thousand cases, predominantly affecting the country's Southeast region. The state of Minas Gerais accounted for 30% of cases, even after the vaccine had been included in the immunization calendar for at least 30 years.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We applied parameters described in the literature from yellow fever disease into
