Winter Quarters Bay (WQB) is a small embayment located adjacent to McMurdo Station, the largest research base in Antarctica. The bay is approximately 250 m wide and long, with a maximum depth of 33 m. Historically, trash from the McMurdo Station was piled on the steep shoreline of WQB, doused with fuel and ignited. That practice has ceased, and the adjacent land area has been regraded to cover the residual waste. Six tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay were analyzed for suspended particulate matter, dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, mercury, methylmercury, lead, nickel, zinc, cadmium, chromium, and copper. Tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) compounds were quantitatively determined from surface sediment samples (total 59 stations) covering a whole basin where harbors, shipyards, and aquaculture farms were located. Shigellosis is common among children in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Our experience showed two distinct features of shigellosis within a span of 3 years in 1994-6: (i) changing patterns of serotype or subtype specific shigellosis and (ii) emergence of multidrug resistant isolates with changing R-patterns. The rate of isolation was 10.4-27.9% with the rate of isolation of Shigella flexneri interchanging with S. dysenteriae alternately. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widespread in coastal waters, yet evidence for PFASs carried by microplastics (MPs) remains limited in semi enclosed bays. A method was optimized to extract and quantify MP associated PFASs and applied to Xiamen Bay. With MP standards spiked with 15 PFASs, 0.1% ammonia in methanol yielded recoveries of 76.83-109.15%.
