The effect of bed rest, unilateral limb immobilization and head-down tilt on muscle protein synthesis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Muscle disuse leads to muscle atrophy and a decrease in muscle function that is primarily driven by reduced muscle protein synthesis (MPS). The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the effect of different models of muscle disuse on rates of MPS. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library. Eligible randomized and non-randomized controlled trials compared the effect of bed rest (BR), unilateral lower limb immobilization (ULLI), and 6° head-down tilt (HDT) on pre-post muscle disuse changes in MPS in adults. Using the random a

Effect of 60 days of head down tilt bed rest on amplitude and phase of rhythms in physiology and sleep in men.

Twenty-four-hour rhythms in physiology and behaviour are shaped by circadian clocks, environmental rhythms, and feedback of behavioural rhythms onto physiology. In space, 24 h signals such as those associated with the light-dark cycle and changes in posture, are weaker, potentially reducing the robustness of rhythms. Head down tilt (HDT) bed rest is commonly used to simulate effects of microgravity but how HDT affects rhythms in physiology has not been extensively investigated. Here we report effects of -6° HDT during a 90-day protocol on 24 h rhythmicity in 20 men. During HDT, amplitude of li

A single bout of prior resistance exercise attenuates muscle atrophy and declines in myofibrillar protein synthesis during bed-rest in older men.

Impairments in myofibrillar protein synthesis (MyoPS) during bed rest accelerate skeletal muscle loss in older adults, increasing the risk of adverse secondary health outcomes. We investigated the effect of prior resistance exercise (RE) on MyoPS and muscle morphology during a disuse event in 10 healthy older men (65-80 years). Participants completed a single bout of unilateral leg RE the evening prior to 5 days of in-patient bed-rest. Quadriceps cross-sectional area (CSA) was determined prior to and following bed-rest. Serial muscle biopsies and dual stable isotope tracers were used to determ

Management of dairy cow resting areas in the United Kingdom: a survey of infrastructure, bedding selection and socio-technical constraints.

This study addresses the hypothesis that bedding selection on UK dairy farms is captive to existing manure management infrastructure rather than being driven primarily by clinical evidence of material performance. The management of dairy cow resting areas is a critical determinant of animal welfare and farm productivity. While academic research often focuses on the biological properties of bedding materials in isolation, commercial selection is frequently constrained by fixed infrastructure and logistical realities. A comprehensive online survey was conducted among 228 dairy farms across the U

Physical and Psychological Burden of Bed Rest on Patients Following Free Flap Reconstruction of the Lower Limb: A Systematic Review and Possible Solutions.

Background: Postoperative bed rest is considered essential after free flap reconstruction of the lower limb to ensure microsurgical success, but prolonged inactivity can lead to physical deconditioning and psychosocial challenges, even in otherwise healthy patients. While early mobilization protocols improve physical recovery, their impact on psychological wellbeing remains underexplored. This review evaluates the current literature on postoperative protocols in microvascular lower extremity reconstruction, focusing on both physical and mental health outcomes, and explores potential strategies

A multimodal exercise countermeasure prevents the negative impact of head-down tilt bed rest on muscle volume and mitochondrial health in older adults.

Mitochondrial dysfunctions are thought to contribute to muscle atrophy and weakness that develop during ageing and mechanical unloading caused by immobilization, bed rest and microgravity. Older adults are at greater risk of developing muscle and mitochondrial dysfunctions in response to unloading. Although exercise is well known to promote muscle and mitochondrial health, its protective effect during mechanical unloading in older adults remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the impact of 14 days of head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR) with and without a multimodal exercise countermeasur

Amnioinfusion and Bed Rest May Effectively Improve the Insufficient Circulation of the Umbilical Cord in Pregnant Women With Hyper-Coiled Cord and Oligohydramnios.

We experienced two cases with hyper-coiled cord in which fetal-umbilical-placental circulation was improved after amnioinfusion or bed rest. Therefore, amnioinfusion and bed rest to reduce the compression of the vulnerable umbilical cord in cases of hyper-coiled cord might improve the pathologic fetal-umbilical-placental circulation.

Effects of time of bed rest on vascular complications after cardiac catheterization in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cardiac catheterization, which is performed by accessing the femoral vessel, requires immobilization and bed rest for 4-6 h to prevent vascular complications. Studies in adults suggest that the immobilization time for the same access can be safely reduced to approximately 2 h after catheterization. However, it is unclear whether bed-rest time can be safely decreased after catheterization in children. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of bed-rest duration on bleeding, vascular complications, pain level, and the use of additional sedatives after transfemoral cardiac cathete

Optic disc edema during strict 6° head-down tilt bed rest is related to one-carbon metabolism pathway genetics and optic cup volume.

Some astronauts on International Space Station missions experience neuroophthalmological pathologies as part of spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). Strict head-down tilt bed rest (HDTBR) is a spaceflight analog that replicates SANS findings and those who had 3-4 risk alleles (G and C alleles from the methionine synthase reductase [MTRR] A66G and serine hydroxymethyltransferase [SHMT1] C1420T, respectively) as compared to 1-2 risk alleles, had a greater increase in total retinal thickness (TRT). The objective of this study was to identify factors that contribute to the individu

Regional changes in muscle mass and strength following 20 days of bed rest, and the effects on orthostatic tolerance capacity in young subjects.

To this day, many studies have suggested that prolonged bed rest (BR) affects on muscle mass and strength not only in gravity muscles but also in ungravity muscles. However, it is still unclear whether the decrease in regional muscle strength after BR is due to the alterations in the corresponding muscle mass, or not. On the other hand, if BR decreases the mass of antigravity muscles (UGM) as well as muscle strength and then increases tissue compliance of the antigravity muscles, orthostatic tolerance capacity will be decreased by the reduction in cardiac output (CO) in spite of the increase i

Effects of ceiling fan use on cardiovascular autonomic function during simulated indoor overheating in bed-resting older adults.

Older adults are at heightened susceptibility to heat-related cardiovascular complications when exposed to indoor overheating. While ceiling fans are recommended as an accessible cooling intervention, their effects on cardiac autonomic regulation remain unclear. In this randomized crossover study, 20 healthy older adults (median age 71 years, 12 female) completed two 8-h exposures to simulated indoor overheating (31°C, 45% relative humidity) while bed-resting with either no fan (control) or ceiling fan use (∼1.5 m/s airflow). Core temperature and heart rate were monitored. Before exposure and

Effects of Ceiling Fans on Self-Reported Symptoms and Mood-State in Bed-Resting Older Adults Exposed to Indoor Overheating.

BACKGROUND: While fans are recommended for cooling at temperatures ≤ 40°C, the extent to which ceiling fans mitigate perceptual and physiological strain in older adults exposed to warm indoor environments (~31°C [87.8°F]) remains unclear. METHODS: This follow-up analysis of our randomized study used validated questionnaires to evaluate effects of ceiling fans on self-reported heat-related symptoms (68-item Environmental Symptoms Questionnaire; ESQ-IV) and mood-state (40-item Profile of Mood States questionnaire; POMS-40) in bed-resting older adults during indoor overheating (8 h; 31°C (87.8°F

Impact of 14 days of head-down bed rest and an exercise countermeasure on skeletal muscle atrophy, proteome and circulatory cytokines in older adults.

Prolonged bed rest and immobilization have deleterious effects on skeletal muscle mass and function, especially in older adults. These can lead to reduced physical capacity and quality of life. Previous experiments in younger individuals show that exercise can mitigate these effects, but evidence remains scarce and inconclusive in older adults. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a mixed-exercise countermeasure on body composition, muscle volume, strength and quality in healthy, ageing adults during 2 weeks of head-down tilt bed rest and in the subsequent recovery p

Development of and adherence to artificial gravity and resistive vibration exercises during 60 days of hypoxic 6° head-down tilt bed rest: BRAVE study.

Artificial gravity (AG) combined with resistive vibration exercise has been proposed as a multi-system countermeasure for long-duration spaceflight; however, its operational feasibility during prolonged unloading remains insufficiently characterised. This study primarily evaluated the feasibility, tolerability, and adherence to a structured resistive vibration exercise protocol delivered either under artificial gravity (AGRVE) or in horizontal loading (HRVE) during 60 days of hypoxic ( F I O 2 ${{F}_{{\mathrm{I}}{{{\mathrm{O}}}_2}}}$  = 0.14) 6° head-down tilt bed rest. Heart rate variability during exercise can quantify cardiorespiratory deconditioning in 55- to 65-yr-old men and women exposed to head-down bed rest.

The heart rate variability (HRV) features HRV0.75 and HRV0.5, obtained by detrended fluctuation analysis during incremental cycle ergometer tests, have been shown to correlate with indices of cardiorespiratory fitness. Here, we evaluate the ability of these features to track individual changes in cardiorespiratory fitness induced by head-down bed rest (HDBR) among late middle-aged adults. Twenty-two healthy participants (55-65 yr old, 11 women) were exposed to 14-day HDBR. Eleven participants were assigned to a group performing daily aerobic and resistive exercises during HDBR, whereas the oth

Muscle atrophy and bone loss after 90 days' bed rest and the effects of flywheel resistive exercise and pamidronate: results from the LTBR study.

Muscle atrophy and bone loss pose substantial problems for long-term space flight and in clinical immobilization. We therefore tested the efficacy of flywheel resistive exercise and pamidronate to counteract such losses. Twenty five young healthy males underwent strict bed rest with -6 degrees head-down tilt for 90 days. Subjects were randomized into an exercise group that practiced resistive exercise with a 'flywheel' (FW) device every 2-3 days, a pamidronate group (Pam) that received 60 mg pamidronate i.v. 14 days prior to bed rest and a control group (Ctrl) that received none of these count

MRI-based quantification of posterior ocular globe flattening during 60 days of strict 6° head-down tilt bed rest with and without daily centrifugation.

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is associated with acquired optic disc edema, hyperopia, and posterior globe flattening in some astronauts during long-duration spaceflight possibly due to the headward fluid redistribution in microgravity. The goal of this study was to assess whether strict head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest as a spaceflight analog would produce globe flattening and whether centrifugation could prevent these changes. Twenty-four healthy subjects separated into three groups underwent 60 days of strict 6° HDT bed rest: one control group with no countermeasure (n =

Lumbar muscle atrophy and increased relative intramuscular lipid concentration are not mitigated by daily artificial gravity after 60-day head-down tilt bed rest.

Exposure to axial unloading induces adaptations in paraspinal muscles, as shown after spaceflights. This study investigated whether daily exposure to artificial gravity (AG) mitigated lumbar spine flattening and muscle atrophy associated with 60-day head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (Earth-based space analog). Twenty-four healthy individuals participated in the study: 8 received 30-min continuous AG; 8 received 6 × 5-min AG interspersed with rest periods; and 8 received no AG exposure (control group). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbopelvic region was conducted at baseline (BDC) and at
