Behavioral addictions in the ICD-11: An important debate that is anticipated to continue for some time.

The Journal of Behavioral Addictions featured a debate on the topic of "behavioral addictions in ICD-11" in 2022. Three main debate papers were published and a total of eleven commentaries. One main topic of considerations in the three debate papers and in the majority of commentaries was compulsive sexual behavior disorder. The debate was balanced, collegial and conducted at a high scientific level. Although there are some disagreements regarding specific details, all authors consider more research on behavioral addictions as important. This scientific debate has been and continues to be enor

To Get High or to Get Out? Examining the Link between Addictive Behaviors and Escapism.

Background: Escapism is a tendency to seek escape and distraction from reality or real-life problems. Past research regards escapism as a negative inducement that leads to adverse consequences when combined with substance use and other addictive activities. Existing knowledge on escapism's connection to addiction is mostly based on studies with restricted populations and lacks a comprehensive view. Objectives: Using an extensive data set, our aim was to investigate whether escapism has a consistent association with different types of addictive behaviors. In this study, we examined (1) the exten

Factors associated with suicidal ideation in drug addicts based on the theory of planned behavior.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have attempted to understand the link among drug addicts and suicidal ideation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors associated with suicidal ideation in drug addicts based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 2160 of drug addicts in private and public clinics for quitting addiction through methadone treatment in Shiraz city, Fars province, Iran from October 2018 to June 2019. Data gathering tools were a questionnaire on demographic characteristics, the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation an

Smartphone Addiction and Checking Behaviors Predict Aggression: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

Despite the potential risks of excessive smartphone use for maladaptive outcomes, the link between smartphone use and aggression remains less understood. Furthermore, prior findings are inconclusive due to a narrow focus on limited aspects of smartphone use (e.g., screen time) and reliance on self-reported assessments of smartphone use. Therefore, using objective measures of smartphone use, we sought to examine the associations between several key indices of smartphone use-screen time, checking behaviors, and addictive tendency-and multifaceted aggression (i.e., confrontation, anger, and hosti

Short-term abstinence effects across potential behavioral addictions: A systematic review.

Observing short-term abstinence effects across potential behavioral addictions is vital for informing understanding about how addiction-related symptoms (withdrawal, craving and relapse) might manifest across these behaviors. Short-term abstinence may also have potential as a clinical intervention for behavioral addictions. This review aimed to synthesize existing research evidence on short-term abstinence effects across potential behavioral addictions in light of (1) manifestations of withdrawal, craving and relapse, and (2) benefits or counterproductive consequences of abstinence. We reviewe

Sex-dependent associations between addiction-related behaviors and the microbiome in outbred rats.

BACKGROUND: Multiple factors contribute to the etiology of addiction, including genetics, sex, and a number of addiction-related behavioral traits. One behavioral trait where individuals assign incentive salience to food stimuli ("sign-trackers", ST) are more impulsive compared to those that do not ("goal-trackers", GT), as well as more sensitive to drugs and drug stimuli. Furthermore, this GT/ST phenotype predicts differences in other behavioral measures. Recent studies have implicated the gut microbiota as a key regulator of brain and behavior, and have shown that many microbiota-associated

β-Arrestin-Biased Allosteric Modulator of NTSR1 Selectively Attenuates Addictive Behaviors.

Small molecule neurotensin receptor 1 (NTSR1) agonists have been pursued for more than 40 years as potential therapeutics for psychiatric disorders, including drug addiction. Clinical development of NTSR1 agonists has, however, been precluded by their severe side effects. NTSR1, a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), signals through the canonical activation of G proteins and engages β-arrestins to mediate distinct cellular signaling events. Here, we characterize the allosteric NTSR1 modulator SBI-553. This small molecule not only acts as a β-arrestin-biased agonist but also extends profound β-ar

Neurobiology of cue-reactivity, craving, and inhibitory control in non-substance addictive behaviors.

Non-substance addictive behaviors may involve repetitive rewarding behaviors including gambling, gaming, sexual activities, internet-use, and buying-shopping. In addictions, there exists diminished control over participation in the behaviors and continuation of the behaviors despite experiencing negative consequences. Addictive participation in behaviors typically results in distress and functional impairment in personal, relational, occupational, educational, or other life domains. Increases in cue-reactivity and craving and decreases in inhibitory control may represent pivotal mechanisms in

Reward-related attentional capture is associated with severity of addictive and obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

A cue that signals reward can capture attention and elicit approach behaviors in people and animals. The current study examined whether attentional capture by reward-related cues is associated with severity of addiction-related and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Participants were recruited via Mechanical Turk and included 143 adults (Mage = 34 years, SD = 8.5; 43% female) who had endorsed at least 1 addiction-related or obsessive-compulsive behavior in the past month. All assessment components were delivered via the Internet and included questionnaires to assess severity of compulsivity-relat

Addictive behaviors and healthcare renunciation for economic reasons in a French population-based sample.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare renunciation for economic reasons is a major health concern, but it has been scarcely investigated among drug users, even if drug users constitute a vulnerable population in need of medical care. This study investigated associations of healthcare renunciation for economic reasons and addictive behaviors (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, illicit drug use, and gambling) in a population-based sample of adults living in France, a country with universal health coverage. METHODS: Data were collected using the 2014 Health Barometer, a French cross-sectional survey conducted among a

Impulsive action and impulsive choice across substance and behavioral addictions: cause or consequence?

Substance use disorders are prevalent and debilitating. Certain behavioral syndromes ('behavioral addictions') characterized by repetitive habits, such as gambling disorder, stealing, shopping, and compulsive internet use, may share clinical, co-morbid, and neurobiological parallels with substance addictions. This review considers overlap between substance and behavioral addictions with a particular focus on impulsive action (inability to inhibit motor responses), and impulsive choice (preference for immediate smaller rewards to the detriment of long-term outcomes). We find that acute consumpt

Non-substance-addictive behaviors in youth: pathological gambling and problematic Internet use.

Adolescence is characterized by participation in multiple novel and potentially risky behaviors. Amongst these behaviors are gambling and use of the Internet, and excessive engagement in these activities (as seen in pathological gambling and problematic Internet use) may be accompanied by serious impairments in school, mental health, and social functioning. This article reviews the potential impact of pathological gambling and problematic Internet use in youth, the relevance of subsyndromal levels of participation, and how prevention and treatment strategies may be considered and tested within

Combined dopamine and serotonin agonists: a synergistic approach to alcoholism and other addictive behaviors.

Successful phentermine and racemic fenfluramine treatment of 150 obese patients led to the use of this therapy in 12 alcoholic patients. Eleven of 12 consecutive patients, most within hours, reported a total loss or marked decrease in alcohol craving. Their reported consumption of alcohol ceased or decreased markedly. The hypothesis is proposed that this treatment is successful because of the dual and balanced increase in the bioavailability of the neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, in the nucleus accumbens. The prospect is raised that cocaine, nicotine, narcotic, and amphetamine addic

Behavioral Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction: A Decade of Great Challenges, New Hopes, and Hypes.

Over a decade after the first edition of "Behavioral Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction," this chapter revisits the field at a critical juncture, marked by both persistent challenges and emerging opportunities. We reflect on the translational gap that has stalled the development of new treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD), despite decades of promising preclinical findings. Particular attention is given to the replicability crisis in animal research, publication biases, and the limited predictive validity of existing models. At the same time, we highlight advances that offer renewed hope, i

The dual impact of tobacco spending: crowding out essentials and crowding in addictive behaviors.

Tobacco use, a major preventable risk factor for premature death and morbidity, profoundly shapes individual and household decision-making. Tobacco spending in lower-income economies exacerbates economic strain of the households. To accommodate tobacco costs, many households are forced to reduce essential expenditures on health and education-a phenomenon known as the crowding out effect. This study uses data from Albania's national Household Budget Survey and applies a three-stage least squares method with instrumental variables to estimate Engel curves to shed light on how tobacco use influen

Dysregulation of dopamine neurotransmission in drug addicts: implications for criminal behavior and corrective interventions.

Drug addiction often correlates with criminal behavior. When investigating criminal behavior among individuals grappling with drug addiction, it becomes crucial to scrutinize the influence of dopamine. Substances such as heroin, morphine, methamphetamine and other drugs can cause abnormal dopamine secretion when people are addicted to them, which promotes changes in the brain's reward circuit and emotional balance, thereby increasing susceptibility to criminal behavior. The pivotal role of dopamine within the reward pathway and its regulatory function in emotional processes exert profound infl

The pleiotropic contribution of genes in dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways to addiction and related behavioral traits.

INTRODUCTION: Co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other behavioral conditions, such as stress-related, aggressive or risk-taking behaviors, in the same individual has been frequently described. As dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) have been previously identified as key neurotransmitters for some of these phenotypes, we explored the genetic contribution of these pathways to SUD and these comorbid phenotypes in order to better understand the genetic relationship between them. METHODS: We tested the association of 275 dopaminergic genes and 176 serotonergic genes with these pheno

FOXN3 and GDNF Polymorphisms as Common Genetic Factors of Substance Use and Addictive Behaviors.

Epidemiological and phenomenological studies suggest shared underpinnings between multiple addictive behaviors. The present genetic association study was conducted as part of the Psychological and Genetic Factors of Addictions study (n = 3003) and aimed to investigate genetic overlaps between different substance use, addictive, and other compulsive behaviors. Association analyses targeted 32 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, potentially addictive substances (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs), and potentially addictive or compulsive behaviors (internet use, gaming, social networking s
