Estimating audiometric thresholds using simultaneous acquisition of ASSR and ABR from QASSR in patients with sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy with which the innovative QASSR method predicts behavioral thresholds in adult patients with sensorineural hearing loss. DESIGN: Subjects were tested at four carrier frequencies (500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz).The resulting QASSR recordings were analyzed for thresholds and magnitude/phase characteristics. Tone-burst ABR was recovered from QASSR signal using CLAD method and analyzed in the time domain. The electrophysiological estimates were compared to hearing thresholds determined behaviorally. STUDY SAMPLE: Sixteen ears of nine volunteer subjects recruit

Application of Sodium Polyacrylate Superabsorbent Polymer on Moisture Stability of Clay and Prediction of the Suction Potential of the Mixture.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), such as sodium polyacrylate (PAAS), are the neutralized form of poly (acrylic acid) and belong to a class of materials characterized by three-dimensional networks of flexible polymer chains with exceptional water absorption and retention capacities. Due to these properties, PAAS has been widely used in agriculture as a soil water conditioner. This study investigates the potential of PAAS as a soil stabilizer for infrastructure applications. Three suction measurement techniques, namely the axis translation method, osmotic technique, and vapor equilibrium method,

Morphological aspects and observations about the permeability of the rat mesentery to the osmium-amine.

In a previous work we felt that many authors were interested in observing the permeability and structure of the mesentery employing many techniques and analysing the material from different points of view. Our collaboration, at that time, was limited to the study of the permeability of the mesentery to the lanthanum nitrate and we came to a final conclusion that the penetration of the heavy salt is impeded by the presence of a basement membrane, localized between the mesothelial and connective tissue layers and that it was continuous to the basal lamina, located between neighbouring mesothelia

High-frequency testing techniques and instrumentation for early detection of ototoxicity.

Veteran patients with certain types of infections and cancers are routinely treated with therapeutic agents having ototoxic potential, thus threatening loss of hearing sensitivity which preexists in the majority of these patients. To prevent communication deficits requiring intervention, this laboratory is developing instrumentation and techniques for early detection of ototoxicity. For this study, conventional (< or = 8 kHz) and high-frequency (> or = 8 kHz) hearing thresholds were monitored behaviorally in hospitalized veterans receiving treatment with ototoxic drugs. Data analysis revealed

Characterization of axonal injury produced by controlled cortical impact.

Axonal injury and behavioral changes were evaluated 3-7 days after traumatic brain injury. Previous research from this laboratory demonstrated that clinical central nervous pathology is produced by dynamic brain compression using a stroke-constrained impactor. We wanted to determine if the technique also would produce diffuse axonal injury after recovery from the procedure. The experiments were performed at Wayne State University School of Medicine using aseptic techniques while assuring analgesic care. Impacts were performed at 4.3 m/sec or 8.0 m/sec, with congruent to 10% compression (2.5 mm

Dissociable Components of Experience-Driven Attention.

What we pay attention to is influenced by current task goals (goal-directed attention) [1, 2], the physical salience of stimuli (stimulus-driven attention) [3-5], and selection history [6-12]. This third construct, which encompasses reward learning, aversive conditioning, and repetitive orienting behavior [12-18], is often characterized as a unitary mechanism of control that can be contrasted with the other two [12-14]. Here, we present evidence that two different learning processes underlie the influence of selection history on attention, with dissociable consequences for orienting behavior.

Fibro-Osseous Lesions of the Skull Base in the Pediatric Population.

Fibro-osseous lesions of the skull base include a variety of lesions with different biologic behavior. The most common lesions include fibrous dysplasia, osteoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and juvenile ossifying fibroma. The diagnosis can usually be established with radiographic imaging. In the absence of symptoms, slow-growing lesions can often be observed. When surgery is indicated for relief of symptoms, endoscopic endonasal techniques are well suited for all age groups.

Depressed mothers' neonates improve following the MABI and a Brazelton demonstration.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a short-term intervention for improving interaction behaviors of newborn infants with their depressed mothers. METHODS: Depressed mothers assigned to the experimental group first observed an administration of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) at delivery. Mothers then used a similar instrument, the Mother's Assessment of the Behavior of her Infant (MABI), to independently conduct NBAS-like infant assessments periodically at home. Depressed mothers in the control group were not present when the NBAS was administered at delivery, and they

Overcoming the black box of aspiration thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke: An early clinical experience of using contrast injections to understand clot-catheter interactions.

BackgroundFactors responsible for failure of aspiration thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke are poorly understood. In order to examine catheter-clot interactions, we modified our current aspiration thrombectomy technique by performing contrast injections near the tip of the aspiration catheter prior to the initiation of aspiration thrombectomy.MethodsSmall volume injections of contrast were performed using a microcatheter positioned inside the aspiration catheter immediately proximal to the occlusion site. Continuous fluoroscopy during the entire duration of each aspiration pas

Neuroimaging and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure causes permanent structural alterations to the brain and can lead to numerous cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Consistent with many of the neuropsychological and behavioral deficits that have been reported, neuroimaging studies reveal a pattern of structural abnormalities associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. This chapter systematically reviews structural anomalies by brain region, identifying cognitive and behavioral correlates when relevant. The consensus shows that in addition to the overall reduction of brain size, prominent brain shape abnormalities

Mechanical characterization of the softening behavior of human vaginal tissue.

The mechanical properties of vaginal tissue need to be characterized to perform accurate simulations of prolapse and other pelvic disorders that commonly affect women. This is also a fundamental step towards the improvement of therapeutic techniques such as surgery. In this paper, the softening behavior or Mullins effect of vaginal tissue is studied by proposing an appropriate constitutive model. This effect is an important factor after the birth, since vaginal tissue has been supporting a high load distribution and therefore does not recover its original behavior. Due to the anisotropy of the

Characterization of the Dynamic Behavior of Neutrophils Following Influenza Vaccination.

Neutrophils are amongst the first cells to respond to inflammation and infection. Although they play a key role in limiting the dissemination of pathogens, the study of their dynamic behavior in immune organs remains elusive. In this work, we characterized in vivo the dynamic behavior of neutrophils in the mouse popliteal lymph node (PLN) after influenza vaccination with UV-inactivated virus. To achieve this, we used an image-based systems biology approach to detect the motility patterns of neutrophils and to associate them to distinct actions. We described a prominent and rapid recruitment of

The Lag Structure of Intrinsic Activity is Focally Altered in High Functioning Adults with Autism.

The behaviors that define autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have been hypothesized to result from disordered communication within brain networks. Several groups have investigated this question using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI). However, the published findings to date have been inconsistent across laboratories. Prior RS-fMRI studies of ASD have employed conventional analysis techniques based on the assumption that intrinsic brain activity is exactly synchronous over widely separated parts of the brain. By relaxing the assumption of synchronicity and focusing, in

Simultaneous effects on vowel duration in American English: a covariance structure modeling approach.

The powerful techniques of covariance structure modeling (CSM) long have been used to study complex behavioral phenomenon in the social and behavioral sciences. This study employed these same techniques to examine simultaneous effects on vowel duration in American English. Additionally, this study investigated whether a single population model of vowel duration fits observed data better than a dual population model where separate parameters are generated for syllables that carry large information loads and for syllables that specify linguistic relationships. For the single population model, in
