Digital Cognitive Behavior Therapy Intervention for Depression and Anxiety: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital mental health interventions offer a scalable solution that reduces barriers to seeking care for clinical depression and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the effectiveness of a 12-week therapist supported, app-based cognitive behavioral therapy program in improving symptoms of depression and anxiety within 9 months. METHODS: A total of 323 participants with mild to moderately severe depression or anxiety were enrolled in a 12-week digital cognitive behavior therapy program. The analysis was restricted to participants who provided at least one follow-up assessment af

Exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy for atopic dermatitis: an open trial.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common and debilitating inflammatory dermatological disorder and is marked by itch and inflamed skin. Scratching, sleep loss, and avoidance of situations associated with more AD symptoms are central hypothesized mechanisms that perpetuate the disorder and cause reduced quality of life. We developed an exposure-based cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) that entailed mindfulness practice as a means to increase tolerance for aversive experiences during exposure. The aim of the present study was to test the treatment's acceptability and preliminary efficacy in adults w

Behavior therapy for depressed breast cancer patients: predictors of treatment outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common psychiatric disorder among breast cancer patients and is associated with substantial functional impairment. Although several outcome studies have explored the utility of psychotherapy for breast cancer patients with subsyndromal depression symptoms, only a few clinical trials have explored the efficacy of behavior therapy for patients with well-diagnosed MDD. An additional limitation of this research is that little is known about factors that best predict treatment outcome. METHOD: In the context of a recent randomized trial of beh

[Growth behavior after femoral shaft fractures: feasibility of patient therapy targets].

BACKGROUND: The treatment of femoral shaft fractures has increasingly become a domain of surgical therapy. On the one hand the possibilities of spontaneous correction of shaft axis deviation and rotation are limited and on the other hand leg length differences are often observed as a result of shaft fractures, which can lead to relevant consequences for spinal and pelvic statics. OBJECTIVES: Is there a benefit from the increasing trend towards surgical therapy and what treatment options are currently available for the treatment of femoral shaft fractures? MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analysis of tr

Current controversies on the role of behavior therapy in Tourette syndrome.

Comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT) is a safe and effective treatment for managing the tics of Tourette syndrome (TS). In contrast to most current medications used for the treatment of tics, the efficacy of CBIT has been demonstrated in 2 relatively large, multisite trials. It also shows durability of benefit over time. Similar to psychopharmacological intervention, skilled practitioners are required to implement the intervention. Despite concerns about the effort required to participate in CBIT, patients with TS and parents of children with TS appear willing to meet the requ

Cognitive behavior therapy for psychological distress in patients with recurrent miscarriage.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the reduction of psychiatric symptoms using individual cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for women who suffer from recurrent miscarriage (RM) and depression and/or anxiety. METHODS: Patients with RM and a score of five or higher for K6, a self-report screening scale for depression/anxiety, were interviewed to find information about stressful situations, thoughts, and consequent behaviors that are common and potential causes of psychological distress among RM patients. We then performed individual CBT on 14 patients with RM and depression/anxiety, referring to a list from

Cognitive behavior therapy for chronic subjective dizziness: a randomized, controlled trial.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) intervention on the physical symptoms, illness-related disability, and psychologic distress of patients with chronic subjective dizziness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients with chronic subjective dizziness referred by a neurootologic clinic were randomly assigned to immediate treatment or a wait-list control. Three weekly treatment sessions based on the CBT model of panic disorder, adapted for patients with dizziness, were administered by a clinical psychologist. Treatment included

Computerized behavior therapy for opioid-dependent outpatients: a randomized controlled trial.

The authors evaluated the efficacy of an interactive, computer-based behavioral therapy intervention, grounded in the community reinforcement approach (CRA) plus voucher-based contingency management model of behavior therapy. Our randomized, controlled trial was conducted at a university-based research clinic. Participants comprised 135 volunteer adult outpatients who met DSM-IV criteria for opioid dependence. All participants received maintenance treatment with buprenorphine and were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: (a) therapist-delivered CRA treatment with vouchers, (b) compute

[Differentiation and therapy of delinquent behavior in borderline disorders. Psychodynamic approach].

In the literature about borderline patients, self-destructive dependency needs are described, as well as oral-aggressive root conflicts. Using case studies, the author points out that in persons with borderline personality organisation, self-destructive forms of delinquency are as likely to manifest themselves as aggressive forms are. The first form is connected with sexual abuse, the second with physical abuse. Therefore, delinquency should be differentiated according to the traumatic experiences. Finally, depending on the direction of delinquency-either directed against oneself or against ot

[Behavior therapy self control in chronic compulsive organismic defective habit development].

Patients with chronic compulsive organismic mishabituations, which are rather difficult to treat, can be helped by self-control methods of behavioural therapy combined with suggestive measures. The author currently regards this therapeutic approach to be superior to aversion therapy, which was occasionally used for such cases in the past. The contribution presents a scheme of therapy which can be generalized and is based on the work of Meichenbaum and Leonhard. The scheme consists of two parts containing four phases each. The actual approach and the modification necessary to tailor it to the i

Cholinergic therapy of abnormal open-field behavior in thiamin-deficient rats.

Although thiamin deficiency is associated with impaired acetylcholine metabolism, the functional significance of the cholinergic lesion is controversial. Therefore, we tested the effect of cholinergic drugs on abnormal open-field behaviors in rats that were treated with a thiamin-deficient diet and thiamin antagonist. After only 1 day of treatment, staring increased significantly in rats given pyrithiamin, a centrally acting thiamine antagonist, but not in rats given oxythiamin, which acts only peripherally. Sniffing, resting and grooming were not altered by either treatment. The acetylcholine

Connecting DSM-5 and ICD-11 trait domains with schema therapy and dialectical behavior therapy constructs.

The DSM-5 Section III alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) and the International Classification of Diseases - 11th Edition's (ICD-11) personality disorder classification allow clinicians to identify individual trait domains in which people score highly. However, how these domains relate to constructs associated with efficacious treatment approaches is unclear. The current study aimed to determine whether constructs from two evidence-based treatments (schema therapy [ST] and dialectical behavior therapy [DBT]) were associated with maladaptive personality traits in a way consistent w

Interpersonal Problems, Mindfulness, and Therapy Outcome in an Acceptance-Based Behavior Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the role interpersonal problems play in response to two treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD); an acceptance-based behavior therapy (ABBT) and applied relaxation (AR), and to examine how the development of mindfulness may be related to change in interpersonal problems over treatment and at follow-up. METHOD: Eighty-one individuals diagnosed with GAD (65.4% female, 80.2% identified as white, average age 32.92) were randomized to receive 16 sessions of either ABBT or AR. GAD severity, interpersonal problems, and mindfulness were measured at pre-treatm

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Multisystemic Therapy and Functional Family Therapy Targeting Antisocial Behavior in Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Youth criminal justice systems are under growing pressure to reduce re-offending behavior and to support young people's health and developmental needs. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to synthesise evidence for 2 prominent community-based interventions for delinquent and antisocial behavior, namely, multisystemic therapy (MST) and functional family therapy (FFT). METHOD: We searched Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, and Social Services Abstracts for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies evaluating MST/FFT. Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Metacognitive Therapy: Moderators of Treatment Outcomes for Children with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective for childhood anxiety disorders, approximately 40% of youth remain anxious after treatment. Metacognitive therapy (MCT-c) for children with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has shown promising effects. The present study aimed to examine if CBT and MCT-c show differential effects in children with primary GAD based on baseline characteristics, in a quasi-experimental design. To investigate which treatment is most beneficial for whom, three potential moderators: age, symptom severity, and comorbid social anxiety were examined. Sixty-three

An update on the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, and exposure therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Even though cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the current treatment of choice for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it is still unclear which components of its protocol are more important for clinical improvement. This study aims to replicate a previous review, updating findings on the efficacy of CBT, cognitive therapy (CT), and exposure therapy (ET) for PTSD when compared with other well-established treatments or conditions without active treatment. METHOD: The search was performed in the databases Cochrane, Embase, and Medline. Studies were required to be randomized cont
