Insight into carbohydrate polymers (chitosan and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate) intercalated bentonite-based nanocomposites as multifunctional and environmental adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide.

Two-hybrid products of bentonite intercalated carbohydrate polymers (chitosan (BE.P.CH) and 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer (BE/P.HEMA/MMA)) were synthesized as enhanced adsorbents for methyl parathion pesticide (MPP). The intercalation processes induced the affinity and the capacity of bentonite achieving the best value at pH 8. The maximum MPP adsorption capacities of BE (287.3 mg/g), BE/P.CH (634.5 mg/g), and BE/P.HEMA-MMA (868.5 mg/g) obtained after 300 min, 240 min, and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic properties of BE follow the Pseudo-second order behavior (

Deciphering indigenous bacteria in compacted bentonite through a novel and efficient DNA extraction method: Insights into biogeochemical processes within the Deep Geological Disposal of nuclear waste concept.

Compacted bentonites are one of the best sealing and backfilling clays considered for use in Deep Geological Repositories of radioactive wastes. However, an in-depth understanding of their behavior after placement in the repository is required, including if the activity of indigenous microorganisms affects safety conditions. Here we provide an optimized phenol:chloroform based protocol that facilitates higher DNA-yields when other methods failed. To demonstrate the efficiency of this method, DNA was extracted from acetate-treated bentonites compacted at 1.5 and 1.7 g/cm3 densities after 24 mon

Durability of organobentonite-amended liner for decelerating chloroform transport.

Chloroform is added to landfill for suppressing methane generation, which however may transport through landfill liners and lead to contamination of groundwater. To decelerate chloroform transport, the enhanced sorption ability of clay liners following organobentonite addition was tested. In this study, we used batch sorption to evaluate sorption capacity of chloroform to organobentonite, followed by column tests and model simulations for assessing durability of different liners. Results show that adding 10% CTMAB-bentonite (organobentonite synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) inc

Thermal stability of organoclays: effects of duration and atmosphere of isothermal heating on iodide sorption.

Heating periods necessary to destroy iodide sorption capacity of the quaternary (alkyl) ammonium and phosphonium modified bentonites were determined using iodide sorption batches. For this purpose, prior to the batches the studied organoclays were isothermally heated in air in the temperature ranges of 110-180 °C and 160-300 °C, respectively. The temperature dependence of the heating periods was found to follow the Arrhenius relationship, which allowed a determination of Arrhenius parameters for the reaction leading to the loss of the iodide sorption capacity of a bentonite modified by CP(+) (

Comparative histopathological and biochemical analysis of early stages of exposure to non-silicogenic aluminium silicate- and strongly silicogenic quartz-dust in rats.

One group of male CFY rats was given bentonite with high aluminium silicate content, the other group was given quartz dust, intratracheally. It has been stated that between 12-72 hours after the dust-exposure, the histological reactions developing upon the effect of non-silicogenic bentonite and silicogenic quartz are identical. Similarly in both groups lipid and phospholipid content of the lung shows a slight increase; the composition of phospholipids does not alter due to the effect of the two dusts. Between 12-72 hours after the exposure to both dusts the inflammatory response characterizin

Fabrication of chitosan coated bentonite clay multifunctional nanosorbents from waste biomass for the effective elimination of hazardous pollutants from waterbodies: A fixed bed biosorption, mechanism, and mathematical model study.

The anthropogenic activity and hasty fluctuating technologies have been responsible for the generation of massive effluent which is so hazardous due to the loading of several toxicants. While most industries usually discharge it directly into the environment resulting in harsh damage to the ecology/public security. Therefore, it is critical to treat with a sustainable/cost-effective technique. Here, a new route of fabrication of chitosan-coated activated natural bentonite clay (CCANBC) bionanocomposites/bionanosorbents from waste biomass has been developed. Their potential application for the

Natural coagulants enhance struvite collection efficiency after phosphorus recovery from poultry litter.

Agricultural runoff is the major contributor to eutrophication. To address this problem, some have advocated for nutrient recovery from agricultural waste. We have previously reported phosphorus recovery from poultry litter using a sequencing batch reactor with CO2-assisted nutrient extraction and NaOH-based precipitation of the slow-release struvite and potassium struvite fertilizers. In our patented process, US Patent US11104617B2, the process effluent was recycled to generate the slurry for the next batch. Pilot-scale studies suggested that precipitated particles were being recirculated dur

Efficient removal of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms through chitosan-clay flocculation: Effects of dosage and application procedure.

Cyanobacterial harmful algae blooms (cyanoHABs) are increasingly common in freshwater around the world, impairing freshwater ecosystems as well as access to water used for drinking, agriculture, fishing, and industry. A combined coagulant-clay flocculation strategy is a promising method to remove harmful algal cells, yet the optimally efficient application protocol and dosage remain unclear, making cost estimation difficult. Here we investigate how (1) the application procedure and (2) the relative dosages of clay and chitosan affect the removal efficiency of M. aeruginosa, a representative fr

Development of a High-Temperature and High-Salinity Resistant Branched Polymer for Controlling Fluid Loss of Water-Based Drilling Fluids.

Conventional fluid-loss reducers lack thermal and salt resistance and exhibit a pronounced viscosity-enhancing effect in bentonite-based drilling fluids. These issues will cause severe problems during drilling operations. Herein, a branched fluid-loss reducer, BPJ, was synthesized using BPEI1800 as the branching core and DMAA, AMPS, DMDAAC, and AN as monomers. BPJ showed good thermal stability, with less thermal degradation at 235 °C. BPJ was thermally stable up to 220 °C in drilling fluids, and it could tolerate saturated NaCl, 10% KCl, and 5% CaCl2. Compared with commercial fluid-loss additi

Removal of dichloroacetic acid from drinking water by using adsorptive ozonation.

Chloroacetic acids, formed during the disinfection process in potable water production, are considered to pose a potential risk to human health. This article deals with dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) removal from drinking water by using a process of bentonite based adsorptive ozonation. This process is formed by combined addition of ozone, bentonite and Fe(3+). During the reaction, DCAA is removed by the joint effect of adsorption, ozonation and catalytic oxidation. In addition, under the effect of the adsorption, natural organic matters (NOM) can be adsorbed onto the bentonite surface, resulting

Self-cleaning liner for halogenated hydrocarbon control in landfill leachate.

Sorptive landfill liners can prevent the migration of the leachate pollutants. However, their sorption ability will decrease over time. A method should be developed to maintain the sorption ability of landfill liners. In this study, we combined cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-bentonite (CTMAB-bentonite) and zero-valent iron (ZVI) to develop a self-cleaning liner that can retain its sorption ability for a long period. Batch experiments and calculation simulations were employed to analyse the sorption ability of this liner material and the ecological risk of halogenated hydrocarbons. The results

Study on mix proportion and mechanism of fine-grained tailing composite anti-seepage material.

Traditional cement-bentonite cutoff materials suffer weak chemical corrosion resistance, and existing tailing-based barriers mostly take tailing as auxiliary filler, lacking multi-component synergistic modification with fine full tailing as primary aggregate. This study prepares a composite anti-seepage material with full fine tailing as main aggregate mixed with Portland cement, sodium bentonite and sodium silicate. Single-factor controlled variable tests with six groups of specimens were carried out to adjust cement and bentonite dosages; permeability tests, quadruple direct shear tests and

Engineering P/g-C3N4-x/bentonite by doping and defect dual strategy to activate peroxymonosulfate for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride: Critical roles of phosphorus doping and cyano-defects on electrons separation.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) shows promising potential for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), however, its practical application is hindered by poor light absorption and inefficient electron-hole pairs (e-/h+) separation. Additionally, there are limited reports on preparing the g-C3N4 with a dual modification of doping and defect through the simple and low-toxic strategy to simultaneously enhance the catalytic capacity of material and the generation of non-radicals. In this work, the phosphorus doping(P doping)and cyano-defects co-modified g-C3N4 (P/g-C3N4-x) via thermal co-polymerizatio

Recovery of struvite via coagulation and flocculation using natural compounds.

One of the major setbacks of struvite recovery processes is the difficulty in harvesting struvite crystals. This study evaluates the use of different coagulants to improve precipitation of struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H20) crystals. Chitosan and poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (Poly-DADMAC) as a coagulant-flocculent and alginate and bentonite as a coagulant aid have been examined in jar tests. Also, a continuous three-phase process, i.e., struvite crystallization, coagulation/flocculation and precipitation process, was set up for real wastewater. Addition of chitosan as the coagulant and benton
