This article examines Naxi funerary culture through the interrelated dimensions of belief, ritual, and materiality, drawing on historical sources, publicly available visual materials, and online semi-structured interviews. It first reviews core beliefs, including the conception that humans possess three souls and the return of the soul to the ancestors, and traces the development of Naxi funerary practices from natural disposal and cremation to contemporary combinations of cremation and burial. Building on existing case records from the Sanba area, it discusses receiving the last breath, the w

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study of Swedish national health registries included individuals aged 30 years or older in Sweden during the pre-COVID-19 (2018-2019) and COVID-19 (2020-2021) periods. Analyses were performed between September 2024 and August

Caring for Grievers: A Scoping Review of Bereavement Practice Approaches and Support Strategies.

Bereavement support is a foundational element of palliative care social work, yet practice approaches and support strategies remain varied. This scoping review was initiated in response to a Canadian children's hospice's interest in expanding its bereavement services. The aim was to identify and critically reflect on assessment strategies and professional approaches used with bereaved children, youth, and adults, and to consider how these align, or diverge, from the values and practices of palliative care social work. A review of evidence syntheses published between 2015 and September 2024 was

Exploring the Bereavement Experience Due to COVID-19 Death Among Arabs in Israel.

This study examined the experience of bereavement because of COVID-19 among the Arab minority in Israel, based on the two-track model of grief, using a qualitative approach. The data was collected in an in-depth interview with 34 participants representing the three religions in the Arab population in Israel, approximately 1 year after the loss occurred. The findings revealed that most participants reported returning to their previous function almost completely, exclusively in the field of work. However, they reported decreased social functioning and feelings of loneliness and sadness, and some

Childhood Bereavement, Adverse and Positive Childhood Experiences, and Flourishing among Chinese Young Adults.

Childhood bereavement (CB) resulting from a parent or primary caregiver death is associated with a range of adverse outcomes. Little is known about the association between CB and adult flourishing in the context of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and positive childhood experiences (PCEs). In a cross-sectional observational study, we examined how ACEs, PCEs, and adult flourishing differs by self-reported CB history among 9468 Chinese young adults (18-35 years), of which 4.3% experienced CB (n = 409). Data collection included convenience sampling among university students in Mainland China.

Experiences of participation in bereavement groups from significant others' perspectives; a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: When death ends a life, the impact of caring for person who suffered a period of illness or disease continues for significant others who are left to grieve. They should be offered support to avoid complicated grief. This can be provided in different ways and individually or in groups. This study aims to describe significant others' experiences of participation in bereavement groups. METHODS: Ten bereavement groups that each met five times offered support for the significant others of deceased loved ones who had been cared for by a palliative-care team. After the five meetings, the

Early Life Bereavement and Schizophrenia: A Nationwide Cohort Study in Denmark and Sweden.

We aimed to examine whether early life bereavement, as indicator of severe stress, was associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia later in life.Based on population registers, we established a cohort of all children born in Denmark (N = 1 686 416) and Sweden (N = 2 563 659) from 1973 to 1997. Children were categorized as exposed if they lost a first-degree relative during the first 18 years of life. Outcome is the first diagnosis of schizophrenia as either inpatient or outpatient. Log-linear Poisson regression models were used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs).A total of 188,850

In-utero exposure to bereavement and offspring IQ: a Danish national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intelligence is a life-long trait that has strong influences on lifestyle, adult morbidity and life expectancy. Hence, lower cognitive abilities are therefore of public health interest. Our primary aim was to examine if prenatal bereavement measured as exposure to death of a close family member is associated with the intelligence quotient (IQ) scores at 18-years of age of adult Danish males completing a military cognitive screening examination. METHODS: We extracted records for the Danish military screening test and found kinship links with biological parents, siblings, and matern

Witness to suffering: mindfulness and compassion fatigue among traumatic bereavement volunteers and professionals.

This study used a survey to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among 41 volunteers and professionals at an agency serving the traumatically bereaved. Compassion fatigue comprises two aspects: secondary traumatic stress and burnout. Because prior research suggests that compassion satisfaction may protect against compassion fatigue, the authors hypothesized that (a) mindfulness would be positively correlated with compassion satisfaction, (b) mindfulness would be inversely correlated with compassion fatigue, and (c) there would be d

The role of negative interpretations of grief reactions in emotional problems after bereavement.

This study explored the role of negative interpretations of grief reactions in emotional problems after bereavement, with 234 individuals who had been confronted with the death of a close relative. It was found that negative interpretations of grief reactions were highly associated with the degree to which these reactions were experienced as distressing, the degree to which mourners engaged in avoidance behaviours and the severity of symptoms of traumatic grief and depression, even when controlling for the frequency of grief reactions and the influence of relevant background variables. Further

Grief response of the primary caregiver receiving bereavement follow-up care at home.

This study implies specific guidelines for intervention. It appears that bereavement follow-up may lessen the grief response at 13 months. Therefore, hospice programs should continue this valuable service. Follow-up interventions should focus on the factors which proved significant: rumination, loss of control, and death anxiety. The study also provided the beginnings of a risk assessment tool for bereaved individuals. Increased age was proved to be a risk factor related to a greater grief response. Although most of the literature indicates women are at a higher risk early in the bereavement p

Assumptions and principles for responsible AI development and use in grief and bereavement care.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into grief and bereavement care represents a significant technological shift with therapeutic potential and ethical complexity. This paper establishes evidence-informed assumptions and principles to guide the responsible development and use of AI technologies in grief support, addressing the needs of bereaved individuals, families, communities, professionals, technology developers, and policymakers. We define "Grief AI" as applications spanning five core technological domains: Natural Language Processing for information seeking and therapeu

Risk and correlates of prolonged grief disorder in bereaved Chinese university students.

Bereavement can present significant challenges for university students, yet the proportion at risk of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) remains unclear. This study examined the proportion at risk of PGD and associated factors among Chinese university students. Using an online survey administered to bereaved university students in mainland China (N = 948), 424 students (Mage=21.60, 56.1% female) reported a significant loss for more than 12 months. Chi-squared and t-tests were used to examine associations between PGD risk and related factors. Results showed 14.2% of the sample were at high risk of
