EEG findings in fetal alcohol syndrome and Down syndrome children.

Results from previous studies evaluating the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of infants born to alcoholic mothers suggest that the neonatal EEG may be a sensitive measure of prenatal ethanol exposure. Few studies, however, have examined EEG records of adolescent children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The present study investigated the resting EEG recordings of 18 matched triads of FAS, Down syndrome, and normal control subjects. Significant reductions in mean power of the alpha frequencies (7.5-12 Hz) were seen for both clinical groups, however, each syndrome appeared to have distinct EEG sp

Evaluation of practice patterns in the treatment of atrial fibrillation among the commercially insured.

OBJECTIVE: The management of atrial fibrillation (AF) involves two choices: (1) rate control versus rhythm control, and (2) anticoagulation treatment based upon risk of stroke. The objective of the study was to describe practice patterns in both of these treatment areas in patients with newly diagnosed AF among a commercially insured population. METHODS: This retrospective administrative claims analysis included patients with ≥2 AF claims between 1 January 2008 and 30 September 2010. Patients with AF claims within a year prior to the index date (i.e., the first AF diagnosis date) were exclude

Level of participation in robotic-assisted treadmill walking modulates midline sensorimotor EEG rhythms in able-bodied subjects.

In robot assisted gait training, a pattern of human locomotion is executed repetitively with the intention to restore the motor programs associated with walking. Several studies showed that active contribution to the movement is critical for the encoding of motor memory. We propose to use brain monitoring techniques during gait training to encourage active participation in the movement. We investigated the spectral patterns in the electroencephalogram (EEG) that are related to active and passive robot assisted gait. Fourteen healthy participants were considered. Asymmetrical frontal resting-state beta oscillations predict trait aggressive tendencies and behavioral inhibition.

Asymmetrical patterns of frontal cortical activity have been implicated in the development and expression of aggressive behavior. Along with individual motivational tendencies, the ability to restrain one's impulses might be a factor in aggressive behavior. Recently, a role for the inhibitory cortical beta rhythm was suggested. The present study investigated whether individual differences in resting state asymmetries in the beta frequency band were associated with trait aggression and behavioral inhibition. In addition, the selective contributions of the prefrontal and motor cortex areas to th

The phase of tACS-entrained pre-SMA beta oscillations modulates motor inhibition.

Inhibitory control has been linked to beta oscillations in the fronto-basal ganglia network. Here we aim to investigate the functional role of the phase of this oscillatory beta rhythm for successful motor inhibition. We applied 20 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) while presenting stop signals at 4 (Experiment 1) and 8 (Experiment 2) equidistant phases of the tACS entrained beta oscillations. Participants showed better inhibitory performance when stop signals were presented at the trough of the beta oscillation whereas their i

Cardioprotection with beta-blockers: myths, facts and Pascal's wager.

Beta-blockers were documented to reduce reinfarction rate more than 3 decades ago and subsequently touted as being cardioprotective for a broad spectrum of cardiovascular indications such as hypertension, diabetes, angina, atrial fibrillation as well as perioperatively in patients undergoing surgery. However, despite lowering blood pressure, beta-blockers have never shown to reduce morbidity and mortality in uncomplicated hypertension. Also, beta-blockers do not prevent heart failure in hypertension any better than any other antihypertensive drug class. Beta-blockers have been shown to increas

Varied Response of EEG Rhythm to Different tDCS Protocols and Lesion Hemispheres in Stroke Subjects with Upper Limb Dysfunction.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) provides a way to modulate the cortical activity and promote motor rehabilitation following stroke. However, evidence indicates that the response to tDCS is highly variable. This study was aimed at exploring rhythmic response of Electroencephalography (EEG) to three tDCS protocols in stroke subjects. We hypothesize that tDCS protocols may interact with stoke characteristics, and electrode placement may affect cortical activity which could be reflected by the EEG rhythm. 32 subjects with unilateral stroke were recruited to a single-blinded, randomi

Antiretroviral therapy effects on sources of cortical rhythms in HIV subjects: responders vs. mild responders.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that 5months of combined anti-retroviral therapy (cART) affect cortical sources of resting state cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms in naïve HIV subjects. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting state EEG data were recorded at baseline (i.e. pre-treatment; T0), T1 (after 4weeks of cART), T2 (after 8weeks of cART), and T5 (after 5months of cART) in 38 naïve HIV subjects. EEG data were also recorded in 40 age-matched cognitively normal subjects for control purposes. EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2-4Hz), theta (4-8Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5Hz), alpha 2 (10.5-

Atrial arrhythmias in chronic lung disease-associated pulmonary hypertension.

Atrial arrhythmias are common during episodes of acute respiratory failure in patients with chronic lung disease-associated pulmonary hypertension. Expert opinion suggests that management of atrial arrhythmias in patients with pulmonary hypertension should aim to restore sinus rhythm. This is clinically challenging in pulmonary hypertension patients with coexisting chronic lung disease, as there is controversy on the use of rhythm control agents; generally, in regard to either their pulmonary toxicity profile or the lack of evidence supporting their use. Rate control methods are largely focuse

Downregulation of the calcium current in human right atrial myocytes from patients in sinus rhythm but with a high risk of atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: A decrease in L-type calcium current (ICaL) is an important mechanism favouring atrial fibrillation (AF). Here, we aimed to identify pathogenic factors associated with ICaL downregulation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Atrial myocytes were isolated from right atrial appendages obtained from 86 adult patients in sinus rhythm with coronary artery disease, aortic valve disease, or mitral valve disease (MVD). Current was recorded in isolated myocytes using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. The ICaL recorded in the 172 myocytes studied showed a marked variability of peak density ranging from 0.1

Human inward rectifier potassium channels in chronic and postoperative atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: We showed recently that the 825T allele of the G-protein beta 3-subunit C825T polymorphism is associated with large inward rectifier K(+) currents I(K1) but low acetylcholine-activated K(+) current I(K,ACh) amplitudes. During chronic atrial fibrillation (AF), I(K1) and I(K,ACh) current densities were increased when compared to sinus rhythm (SR). It is unknown whether chronic AF and G beta 3 gene status are independent contributors to atrial K(+) current activity. We measured I(K1) and I(K,ACh) in tissue from AF patients with different G beta 3 genotypes and assessed the relation bet

Diminished variability of alpha and beta band-limited power as a neural signature in schizophrenia.

Spectral features of the electroencephalogram (EEG) are essential for providing clinically relevant biomarkers in schizophrenia (SZ). Despite literature indicating altered short-scale neural dynamics in SZ, however, band-limited power (BLP) indices are rarely assessed in a time-resolved manner. To address this, here we evaluated static and dynamic BLP indices in a sample of 30 SZ patients and 31 healthy control (HC) individuals. Guided by recent findings on power spectral dynamics in SZ, we estimated total, and decomposed fractal and oscillatory BLP in a sliding window manner from resting-stat

Beta and gamma synchronous oscillations in neural network activity in mice-induced by food deprivation.

Food deprivation is known to trigger hunger sensation and motivation to eat for energy replenishing. However, brain mechanisms associated with hunger and neural circuitries that mediate hunger driven responses remained to be investigated. To understand neural signaling of hunger, local field potentials (LFPs) in the lateral hypothalamus (LHa), nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsal hippocampus (HP) and olfactory bulb (OB) and their interconnectivities were studied in freely moving adult male Albino mice during 18-20 h food deprivation and fed periods. Raw LFP signals were recorded and analyzed for me

Multiscale neural connectivity during human sensory processing in the brain.

Stimulus-related brain activity is considered using wavelet-based analysis of neural interactions between occipital and parietal brain areas in alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (15-30 Hz) frequency bands. We show that human sensory processing related to the visual stimuli perception induces brain response resulted in different ways of parieto-occipital interactions in these bands. In the alpha frequency band the parieto-occipital neuronal network is characterized by homogeneous increase of the interaction between all interconnected areas both within occipital and parietal lobes and between them. Electroencephalogram-based objective assessment of cognitive function level associated with age-related hearing loss.

Age-Related Hearing Loss (ARHL) is a common problem in aging. Numerous longitudinal cohort studies have revealed that ARHL is closely related to cognitive function, leading to a significant risk of cognitive decline and dementia. This risk gradually increases with the severity of hearing loss. We designed dual auditory Oddball and cognitive task paradigms for the ARHL subjects, then obtained the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale evaluation results for all the subjects. Multi-dimensional EEG characteristics helped explore potential biomarkers to evaluate the cognitive level of the ARHL

Intrinsic and antagonistic effects of beta-carboline FG 7142 on behavioral and EEG actions of benzodiazepines and pentobarbital in cats.

The methyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxamide FG 7142 (10 mg/kg i.p.) produced a pronounced state of alertness, attentive behavior and fearfulness in the cat. Electroencephalographic (EEG) desynchronization in the cortex and theta rhythms in the hippocampus occurred concomitantly. Behavioral and hippocampal EEG actions of FG 7142 were reduced by Ro 15-1788 (10 mg/kg i.p.). The benzodiazepines diazepam and quazepam produced behavioral and EEG effects which were completely antagonized by FG 7142. The pentobarbital effects also were partially antagonized. These findings suggest that the cat provides an

Agents with anxiolytic properties, namely, the tranquilizer diazepam (0.1 mg/kg), melatonin a hormone secreted by the pineal gland (0.1 mg/kg), and the beta-adrenergic blocker anapriline (5 mg/kg), remove in a similar manner stress-induced dysrhythmia in rats. Under their effect the circadian rhythm of motor activity is normalized and adaptation shifts in the time dynamics of forced swimming are encountered.

[The application of 4-aminopyridine in calcium channel inhibitors acute poisoning].

Calcium channel inhibitors have been extensively used to treat arterial hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and supraventricular rhythm irregularities. The poisonings by that category of drugs are extremely dangerous, particularly when accompanied by intoxication with other drugs affecting the circulatory function. This paper reports 3 cases of poisonings with calcium channel inhibitors (verapamil and diltiazem) in combination with angiotensin convertase inhibitors and nonselective beta-adrenolytics. Circulatory insufficiency and cardiac rhythm abnormalities were noted in all reported cases,
