A bezoar is a mass of undigested material which may form within the lumen of the gut. Some drugs have the potential to form bezoars. In the majority of patients, there is a clear predisposing factor. We present here the data of the French System of Pharmacovigilance on sucralfate and a literature review. Two distinct populations were involved: 16 adults and 5 newborn babies. All were hospitalized in intensive care units. The children were very low birth weight newborn babies, all of whom presented with abdominal distension or acute occlusion. The abdominal radiograph revealed an opaque mass fi

A healthy toddler presented with a 1-month history of constipation and was started on laxatives. Four years later, the patient returned with an abdominal mass and pain, but no vomiting, diarrhoea or hard stools. An ultrasound showed a thickened hyperechoic wall with acoustic shadowing in the epigastric region and enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Routine laboratory tests were normal. Laxatives were reintroduced, and a follow-up ultrasound 3 months later still indicated an abdominal mass. Five months afterwards, the CT scan suggested a bezoar, leading to a referral to the paediatric surgical uni

Coconut bezoars are rare causes of gastrointestinal obstruction, particularly in patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Altered gastric motility and anatomical changes after bariatric surgery predispose patients to the accumulation of indigestible fibers. We report the case of a 45-year-old female who presented one year after RYGB with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Upper endoscopy revealed a coconut bezoar in the gastric pouch, which was successfully treated with endoscopic mechanical fragmentation and extraction. The patient recovered fully without surgical inter

Bezoars are rare gastrointestinal masses composed of indigestible substances, typically found in the stomach but at times occurring at more distal locations. Rectal seed bezoars are particularly unusual and manifest with nonspecific gastrointestinal complaints, predisposing to making the diagnosis difficult and delaying appropriate therapy. We describe a case of a 68-year-old female presenting with acute constipation, tenderness of the rectum, and per-rectal bleeding. The patient had a history of recent consumption of approximately 100 g of sunflower seeds. Examination and imaging of the abdom

RATIONALE: Gastric bezoar-induced duodenal obstruction represents a rare clinical entity with <0.5% incidence among mechanical bowel obstructions.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 73-year-old female patient presented to our institution, manifesting acute abdominal syndrome characterized by progressive pain and distension.
DIAGNOSES: Computed tomography demonstrated a 3.5 cm intraluminal phytobezoar at the duodenal horizontal segment and proximal small bowel dilatation; Intraoperative: Bezoar impaction 60 cm from the ileocecal valve.
INTERVENTIONS: Initial conservative therapy included: fasting, anti-inf

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A bezoar is an indigestible food or other material within the gastrointestinal tract. It can be ingested intentionally or accidentally. The small bowel bezoar prevalence ranges between 0.4 % and 4 %, and the prevalence is less than 0.5 % for gastric bezoars. There are different types of bezoars, but the mention of a plastic bezoar rarely appears in the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a plastic bezoar in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman was admitted for acute kidney injury, and while working her up

The ketogenic diet is frequently used as part of the treatment regimen for pediatric patients with refractory epilepsy. This diet is generally well tolerated, with constipation being the most described side effect. This case highlights a previously undocumented severe complication of a "keto-bezoar" formation related to the initiation of the ketogenic diet in a young infant.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania and trichophagia cause trichobezoars, which are masses made of hair. The main presentation of this condition is abdominal pain. However, other complications include gastric outlet obstruction, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, malnutrition, hematemesis, diarrhea, and constipation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman with trichotillomania was admitted to the Emergency Department with the chief complaints of dyspnea on exertion, shortness of breath, dysphagia, generalized weakness, and hoarseness. Spiral chest computed tomography (CT) scan did not reveal any parench

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and indications for surgery for bezoar-induced small bowel obstruction (BI-SBO).
METHODS: Forty patients with BI-SBO were treated at our hospital from January 2017 to December 2019, and these patients' clinical and computed tomography (CT) data were analyzed.
RESULTS: Twenty-seven and 13 BI-SBO patients constituted the non-ST group and ST group, respectively. The clinical manifestations of BI-SBO in both groups were abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and lack of defecation. Comparing the non-ST vs ST groups, respectively: mean age (years):

A 65-year-old lady was admitted with urosepsis and imaging suggesting right sided hydronephrosis secondary to a filling defect consistent with a fungal bezoar. An indwelling urinary catheter and a right percutaneous nephrostomy tube were inserted. Candida glabrata cultured from urine was resistant to fluconazole. Amphotericin B was instilled into the renal pelvis via the nephrostomy tube while intravenous liposomal amphotericin was administered daily along with oral flucytosine. This multi-modal antifungal administration was continued for 14 days. Clinical and biochemical improvement was achie

Hyperkalemia is one of the most common electrolyte disorders, responsible for a high number of adverse outcomes, including life-threatening arrhythmias. Potassium binders are largely prescribed drugs used for hyperkalemia treatment but unfortunately, there are many adverse events associated with its use, mostly gastrointestinal. Identification of patients at highest risk for the serious complications associated with the current potassium binders, such as colon necrosis and perforation, could prevent fatal outcomes. The authors present a case of a 56-year-old man with secondary diabetes and chr

A 52-year-old male patient with psychiatric medical history who presented to the emergency department five times during a period of 5 years due to gastric outlet obstruction manifested mainly by abdominal pain, vomiting and haematemesis after intentionally ingesting metals and which necessitate several surgical interventions. Lately, he presented with generalised peritonitis due to gastric perforation from metal bezoars. Chronic abdominal symptoms in patient having a psychiatric disorder can be due to foreign body ingestion. Treatment is often surgical and the whole digestive tract should be e

BACKGROUND: Trichobezoar is an uncommon entity observed mostly in young women. Symptoms in presenting patients are usually due to the large mass of the bezoar or malabsorption of nutrients. Trichobezoar is almost always associated with trichotillomania and trichophagia.
CASE REPORT: Three teenage girls, aged 13, 15, and 16, were diagnosed due to palpable epigastric masses. Additionally the oldest patient presented with symptoms of ileus while the other two patients had weight loss and anaemia. Besides the 15-year-old patient complained of paroxysmal abdominal pains. Patients were subjected to

INTRODUCTION: Bezoar is an unusual cause of small bowel obstruction accounting for 0.4-4% of all mechanical bowel obstruction. The common site of obstruction is terminal ileum.
CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old male with no past surgical history, known to have severe mental retardation presented with anorexia. CT scan demonstrated dilated small bowel loops and intraluminal ileal mass with mottled appearance. At exploratory laparotomy, a bezoar was found impacted in the terminal ileum 5-6 inches away from the ileocecal valve and was removed through an enterotomy.
DISCUSSION: Bezoars are concretions

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to evaluate the accuracy of CT for differentiating small-bowel bezoar from small-bowel feces in cases of small-bowel obstruction (SBO).
CONCLUSION: In cases of SBO, although some CT features of bezoars and small-bowel feces overlap, a well-defined mass mottled with gas bubbles associated with an encapsulating wall, the newly described "floating fat-density debris" sign, and a lesion in the stomach that appears similar to the obstructing mass is typical of a small-bowel bezoar; an isolated amorphous mass mottled with gas bubbles is typical of small-bow
