This review examines the growing concern over persistent, non-biodegradable micro- and nanopollutants in marine environments, driven largely by industrial activities, particularly manufacturing processes involving micro- and nanoparticles. Global oceans are increasingly burdened by complex mixtures of heavy metals, engineered nanomaterials (ENPs), and micro- to nanoplastics, all of which threaten ecosystem integrity and seafood safety. Heavy metals accumulate in sediments and marine organisms, enabling biomagnification through the food web. ENPs, with their nanoscale dimensions and unique phys

Wood vinegar (WV) can serve as both a solvent and a functional additive for chitosan (CS) due to its inherent weak acidity and richness in organic compounds. Based on this principle, we successfully prepared WV/CS films and further enhanced their performance by incorporating nanocellulose (NC). The resulting NCFs exhibited a tensile strength of 71.06 MPa, which is 30% higher than that of the WV/CS film (54.50 MPa). Furthermore, the NCFs had excellent UV shielding properties in the UVA (>70%) and UVB (>90%) regions and impressive antioxidant (more than 90% scavenging rates for DPPH and ABTS) an

Polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic, is increasingly promoted as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. However, its degradation under non-composting conditions and associated toxicological impacts remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to compare the toxicity of PLA microplastics (MPs) at different degradation stages, including PLA polymers, oligomers, and aged polymers, in zebrafish larvae. Zebrafish were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L), and morphological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses were performed. PLA

Amid growing concerns about climate change, environmental pollution, and fossil resource depletion, bio-based chemicals and materials have garnered significant attention. Succinic acid (SA), a four-carbon dicarboxylic acid, is a key platform chemical for producing industrially important compounds such as poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), a biodegradable polymer. In this paper, we demonstrate the enhanced production of SA using metabolically engineered Mannheimia succiniciproducens PALK (pMS3-gltA) strain, which achieves high SA yields through enhanced biomass production and optimized metabolic p

Succinic acid is an important C4 platform compound that serves as a raw material for the production of 1,4-butanediol, tetrahydrofuran, and biodegradable plastics such as polybutylene succinate (PBS). Compared to the traditional petrochemical-based route that uses maleic anhydride as a raw material, the microbial fermentation method for producing succinic acid offers more sustainable economic value and environmental friendliness. Yeasts with good acid tolerance can achieve low-pH fermentation of succinic acid, significantly reducing the cost of product extraction. Therefore, constructing high-

Industrial activities, such as mining, electroplating, cement production, and metallurgical operations, as well as manufacturing of plastics, fertilizers, pesticides, batteries, dyes or anticorrosive agents, can cause metal contamination in the surrounding environment. This is an acute problem due to the non-biodegradable nature of metal pollutants, their transformation into toxic and carcinogenic compounds, and bioaccumulation through the food chain. At the same time, platinum group metals and rare earth elements are of strong economic interest and their recovery is incentivized. Microbial in

Bioethanol is an alternative energy source to fossil fuels and can serve as a raw material for the production of sustainable aviation fuel. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a biodegradable plastic with the potential to replace petrochemical plastics. Lignocellulose has a renewable and eco-friendly nature, and it is a key factor in determining the environmental impact of bioethanol and PHB. In this study, we addressed this issue by developing Escherichia coli for the co-production of bioethanol and PHB from rice straw hydrolysate (RSH). Metabolic evolution was employed to enhance ethanol tolera

Polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs), despite being marketed as biodegradable and eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics, have raised growing concerns regarding their potential adverse effects on human health. The reproductive toxicity of PLA-MPs exposure in male mammals has been confirmed in previous studies, but its specific effects on testosterone biosynthesis remain unclear. Male mice were treated with PLA-MPs at doses of low, medium, and high (0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/d, respectively) for a duration of 28 days in this study. Our results demonstrated that PLA-MPs were enriched in

Lakes serve as critical freshwater resources that sustain biodiversity, support recreational activities, and contribute to regional tourism. Maintaining their water quality is essential to avoid ecological degradation. Considering the ubiquity of various emerging contaminants, lakes in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh (Central India) were examined for the presence of microplastics. A total of 3 lakes were taken into consideration and water sampling was done followed by analysis and risk assessment. Microplastics were found in all the lakes with concentration varying from 6.7 items/L to12.

The increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics highlights the need for innovative bioactive packaging systems. This study aimed to develop agar-based biodegradable films co-incorporating deep eutectic solvents (DES) and a DES-extracted, polyphenol-rich matcha extract. Matcha extracts were obtained via ultrasonic-assisted extraction using binary and ternary DES, and their phenolic profiles and quantities were determined by LC-HRMS. During film casting, DES and the DES-extracted matcha were directly incorporated into the agar matrix, with DES simultaneously servin

As common biodegradable plastics (BPs), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was used in food packaging, pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, and tissue engineering, which can be easily broken down by environmental microorganisms into microplastics (MPs), leading to their exposure and accumulation in the human body. However, the adverse health effect resulting from exposure to PCL MPs remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study comprehensively investigated the impact of PCL MPs on lipid metabolism, intestinal barrier, and gut microbiota. The results indicated that PCL MPs can promote lipid synthesis while in

BACKGROUND: The pervasive presence of plastic packaging has led to significant environmental contamination due to excessive reliance on petrochemicals and the inherent non-biodegradability of these materials. Bacterial cellulose (BC) films present a viable alternative for food packaging applications, owing to their environmentally friendly synthesis process, non-toxic nature, robust mechanical strength, and biodegradability. However, the high hygroscopicity of such bio-based materials has limited their widespread adoption, as it results in diminished strength and barrier properties. In this st

Biodegradable polymers (BPs) are often seen as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. However, their actual degradability in soils, a major sink for plastic pollution, varies considerably. Moreover, their breakdown can influence soil microbial communities, with potential consequences for ecosystem function. Here, we compared the impacts of four major BP types: (1) poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), (2) poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), (3) poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), and (4) poly(lactic acid) (PLA), on soil and plastisphere microbial communities.

The environmental degradation and fate of cellulose-based 'biodegradable' wet wipes under real-world conditions remain underexplored, particularly in urban freshwater systems where they are frequently discharged via toilet flushing. Building on previous mesocosm-based experiment, this study quantified in-situ degradation of two commercially available cellulose-based wipes labelled 'biodegradable' across ten urban rivers and streams and identified key environmental drivers of degradation. Tensile strength loss was used as a proxy measurement for wipe degradation alongside cotton strip bioassays

In modern life petroleum-based plastic has become indispensable due to its frequent use as an easily available and a low cost packaging and moulding material. However, its rapidly growing use is causing aquatic and terrestrial pollution. Under these circumstances, research and development for biodegradable plastic (bioplastics) is inevitable. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a type of microbial polyester that accumulates as a carbon/energy storage material in various microorganisms can be a good alternative. In this study, 23 cyanobacterial strains (15 heterocystous and 8 non-heterocystous) were scr

Microplastics (MPs) have attracted global concern and are at the forefront of current research on environmental pollution, whereas, little is known about the degradation of ingested MPs in the gastrointestinal environment and repetitive exposure-associated risk of egested MPs to organisms. The present study revealed that polyamide (PA) and polystyrene (PS) MPs exhibited remarkably differential biodegradations in the gastric and intestinal fluids of a model fish (Siniperca chuatsi). Significant disintegration of the skeleton structure, size reduction (from 27.62 to 9.17 µm), benzene ring scissi

A starch-resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF)-lithium triflate (LiTf) based biodegradable polymer electrolyte membrane was synthesized via the solution casting technique. The formation of RF crosslinks in the starch matrix was found to repress the starch's crystallinity as indicated by the XRD data. Incorporation of the RF plasticizer improved the conductivity greatly, with the highest room-temperature conductivity recorded being 4.29 × 10-4 S cm-1 achieved by the starch:LiTf:RF (20 wt.%:20 wt.%:60 wt.%) composition. The enhancement in ionic conductivity was an implication of the increase in the polym

Biodegradable plastic mulch films are increasingly adopted in agriculture, yet the ecotoxicological risks arising from their degradation products in mixtures with concurrent chemical inputs remain largely unexplored. This study assessed the lethal and sublethal toxicity of PBAT/PLA biodegradation products combined with four soil-applied insecticides (abamectin, cyantraniliprole, sulfoxaflor, and thiamethoxam) on the soil invertebrates Folsomia candida and Stratiolaelaps scimitus across a 12-week degradation period. In F. candida, PBAT/PLA biodegradation products synergized the lethal toxicity
