PFASs and chlorinated solvents are the common co-contaminants in soil and groundwater at firefighter training areas (FTAs). Although PFASs mixtures could have adverse impacts on bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by inhibiting Dehalococcoides (Dhc), little is known about the effect and contribution of PFOA or PFOS on dechlorination of TCE by non-Dhc organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). To study this, PFOA and PFOS were amended to the growth medium of a non-Dhc OHRB-containing enrichment culture to determine the impact on dechlorination. This study demonstrated that high levels of PFO

Biologically mediated degradation of organic compounds in porous media is a complex mathematical problem, described by a non-linear differential equation. The organic compound gets in contact with the biomass, and an enzyme-catalysed reaction takes place. The net result is that part of the parent compound degrades into some daughter product, while some of the organic carbon is used for microbial growth. The rate of biomass growth in the presence of a limiting nutrient supply is usually modelled with the experimentally derived Monod equation, i.e., it is proportional to the actual existing biom

Microbial reductive dechlorination is one of the chosen methods for remediation of chlorinated compounds in anaerobic environments. In this study we examined the degradation of chlorinated aliphatics in groundwater samples from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) containing a concentration of 0.228 mM trichloroethylene (TCE) and 0.279 mM 1,2 dichloroethylene (DCE). We tested the influence of adding different carbon sources on the dechlorinating activity in batch cultures with and without dechlorinating bacteria. In-situ microcosms were established using SSFL groundwater supplemented with

Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are considered important groups of chemicals mainly produced by human and industrial activities. The large-scale application of these xenobiotics creates contamination of the water and soil environment. Despite applicability, NACs have been caused severe hazardous side effects in animals and human systems like different cancers, anemia, skin irritation, liver damage and mutagenic effects. The effective remediation of the NACs from the environment is a significant concern. Researchers have implemented physicochemical and biological methods for the remediation of N

Glyphosate is a synthetic phosphonate compound characterized by a carbon‑phosphorus bond. Glyphosate based herbicides (GBH) are widely distributed in most of the economically productive lands in which crop production is mainly based on glyphosate-resistant genetically modified plants. Naturally, glyphosate is remediated by soil microorganisms, which accelerate its degradation. Technology based on microorganisms is considered highly efficient, low-cost and eco-friendly to remediate contaminated environments, denoting the importance of characterizing new bacterial strains able to degrade glyphos

Macrolide antibiotics are a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics with the macrolide as core nucleus. Recently, antibiotic pollution has become an important environmental problem due to the irregular production and abuse of macrolide antibiotics. Microbial degradation is one of the most effective methods to deal with antibiotic pollution. This review summarizes the current status of environmental pollution caused by macrolide antibiotics, the degradation strains, the degradation enzymes, the degradation pathways and the microbial processes for degrading macrolide antibiotics. Moreover, the criti

Hydrogen-releasing substrates can stimulate the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethene (TCE) mediated by organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) at contaminated sites. However, how the substrate affects microbiome assembly and the accompanying influences on the growth of OHRB and reductive TCE dechlorination remains unclear. We evaluated the effects of microbial community structures and potential functions on the reductive dechlorination of TCE in three anaerobic reactors with acetate, soybean oil, or molasses as the substrate and no cobalamin or amino acid supplementation. The molasses-fe

Due to its enriched organic matter, nutrients and growth cofactors, as well as a diverse range of microorganisms, waste activated sludge (WAS) might be an ideal additive to stimulate organohalide respiration for in situ bioremediation of organohalide-contaminated sites. In this study, we investigated the biostimulation and bioaugmentation impacts of WAS-amendment on the performance and microbiome in tetrachloroethene (PCE) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) dechlorinating microcosms. Results demonstrated that WAS-amendment increased PCE- and PCBs-dechlorination rate as much as 6.06 and 10.67

A biostimulation study was conducted on mining waste residue with nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) and/or liming agent (ash or CaCO3 ) amendment to assess petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) biodegradation efficiency by indigenous microorganisms. Compounds accumulated and/or released by treated samples were also monitored to determine the potential for acid mine drainage production during biostimulation. The potential for natural attenuation (i.e., the biodegradation of PHC contamination) was initially low but increased significantly upon nutrient addition. The best results were obtained when nutrie

Ivermectin (IVM) is a widely used antiparasitic agent and acaricide. Despite its high efficiency against nematodes and arthropods, IVM may pose a threat to the environment due to its ecotoxcity. In this study, degradation of IVM by a newly isolated bacterium Aeromonas taiwanensis ZJB-18,044 was investigated. Strain ZJB-18,044 can completely degrade 50 mg/L IVM in 5 d with a biodegradation ability of 0.42 mg/L/h. Meanwhile, it exhibited high tolerance (50 mg/L) to doramectin, emamectin, rifampicin, and spiramycin. It can also efficiently degrade doramectin, emamectin, and spiramycin. The IVM de

Biotechnology has proven effective in removing a wide variety of VOCs. In this study, the effects of pH (from 3 to 7), operating temperature (20-30 °C), empty bed residence time (EBRT, 10-40 s) and transient inlet concentration (400-4000 mg m-3) on the removal performance of an airlift packing bioreactor (ALPR) was investigated. The removal efficiency (RE) and stability of the ALPR was evaluated and compared with the conventional airlift bioreactor (ALR). The results showed that under the influence of single factor variation, the ALPR showed significant higher RE and better stability than the

Reverse osmosis is a widely known technology used to produce fresh water from brackish waters. However, the reject brine from desalination plants poses a serious threat to the environment due to soil and groundwater salinization. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of Atriplex nummularia to extract salts from a soil irrigated with reverse osmosis brine, at varying moisture levels. A field experiment was conducted in a split-plot design, with randomized complete blocks replicated four times. Treatments consisted of irrigation with reject brine in the main plots, with four rel

Soil biodegradable mulch films composed of the polyester polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) are being increasingly used in agriculture. Analytical methods to quantify PBAT in field soils are needed to assess its soil occurrence and fate. Here, we report an analytical method for PBAT in soils that couples Soxhlet extraction or accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) with quantitative protonnuclear magnetic resonance (q-1H NMR) spectroscopy detection. The 1H NMR peak areas of aromatic PBAT protons increased linearly with PBAT concentrations dissolved in deuterated chloroform (CDCl3), demo

Chloroethenes belong to the most widely distributed groundwater contaminants. Since 2014, it has been known that trichloroethene (TCE) can be degraded aerobically and metabolically as growth substrate by a mixed bacterial enrichment culture (named SF culture). In this study, the degradation capabilities under a range of field-relevant conditions were investigated in fixed-bed reactors as well as in batch experiments. Aerobic metabolic TCE degradation was stable over the long term, with degradation optima at 22 °C and pH 7. Degradation of up to 400 μM TCE was observed. The longest starvation pe

Desulfitobacterium hafniense Y51 has been widely used in investigations of perchloroethylene (PCE) biodegradation, but limited information exists on its other physiological capabilities. We investigated how D. hafniense Y51 confronts the debilitating limitations of not having enough electron donor (lactate), or electron acceptor (fumarate) during cultivation in chemostats. The residual concentrations of the substrates supplied in excess were much lower than expected. Transcriptomics, proteomics and fluxomics were integrated to investigate how this phenomenon was regulated. Through diverse regu

Acetylene (C2H2) can be generated in contaminated groundwater sites as a consequence of chemical degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) by in situ minerals, and C2H2 is known to inhibit bacterial dechlorination. In this study, we show that while high C2H2 (1.3 mM) concentrations reversibly inhibit reductive dechlorination of TCE by Dehalococcoides mccartyi isolates as well as enrichment cultures containing D. mccartyi sp., low C2H2 (0.4 mM) concentrations do not inhibit growth or metabolism of D. mccartyi. Two aerobic sulfadiazine (SDZ) degrading bacterial strains, D2 and D4, affiliated with the genus Arthrobacter, were isolated from SDZ-enriched activated sludge. The degradation of SDZ by the two isolates followed first-order decay kinetics. The half-life time of complete SDZ degradation was 11.3 h for strain D2 and 46.4 h for strain D4. Degradation kinetic changed from nongrowth to growth-linked when glucose was introduced as the cosubstrate, and accelerated biodegradation rate was observed after the adaption period. Both isolates could degrade SDZ into 12 biodegradation products via 3 paralle

This study investigates how the feeding pattern of e(-) donors might affect the efficiency of enhanced in situ bioremediation in TCE-contaminated aquifers. A series of lab-scale batch experiments were conducted using butyrate or hydrogen gas (H2) as e(-) donor and a TCE-dechlorinating microbial consortium dominated by Dehalococcoides spp. The results of these experiments demonstrate that butyrate is similarly efficient for TCE dechlorination whether it is injected once or in doses. Moreover, the present work indicates that the addition of butyrate in great excess cannot be avoided, since it mo

The inhibitory effect and biodegradation of benzalkonium chloride (BAC), a mixture of alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chlorides with different alkyl chain lengths, was investigated at a concentration range from 5 to 20 mg/L and different biomass concentrations in an activated sludge system. A solution containing glucose and mineral salts was used as the wastewater in all the assays performed. The inhibition of respiratory enzymes was identified as the mode of action of BAC as a result of oxygen uptake rate analysis performed at BAC concentrations ranging between 5 and 70 mg/L. The glucose degra

With the current practice of amending gasoline with up to 15% by volume MTBE, the contamination of groundwater by MTBE has become widespread. As a result, the bioremediation of MTBE-impacted aquifers has become an active area of research. A review of the current literature on the aerobic biodegradation of MTBE reveals that a number of cultures from diverse environments can either partially degrade or completely mineralize MTBE. MTBE is either utilized as a sole carbon and energy source or is degraded cometabolically by cultures grown on alkanes. Reported degradation rates range from 0.3 to 50
