Hollow Glass Microspheres (HGMs): Synthesis, Characterization, and Processes in Biomedical Applications-A Review.

Hollow glass microspheres, as demonstrated in recent studies, have shown significant importance in the field of composite materials and have emerged as transformative materials in biomedical applications. This is necessitated by their ability to provide a physicochemical gradient, a desirable tool for complex tissues and biological interfaces, through the spatiotemporal release of bioactive factors and nanophase ceramics. HGMs are structures with diameters ranging from 1 to 1000 µm that can be used as support for cell growth, either in the form of a scaffold or a drug delivery system. In this

A provisional and evolving framework for standardizing cartilage organoid construction: toward consistency, reproducibility, and clinical translation.

Cartilage organoids (COs) have emerged as a promising three-dimensional platform for modeling cartilage development, degeneration, and repair, yet their broader application remains constrained by substantial variability in cell sources, construction strategies, culture conditions, and evaluation criteria. This manuscript addresses the critical need for standardization in CO research and aims to establish a structured framework for their classification, construction, application, and quality assessment. We systematically summarize the defining features of COs and distinguish them from related c

A Forensic Disassembly of the BIS Monitor.

BACKGROUND: The bispectral index (BIS) monitor has been available for clinical use for >20 years and has had an immense impact on academic activity in Anesthesiology, with >3000 articles referencing the bispectral index. Despite attempts to infer its algorithms by external observation, its operation has nevertheless remained undescribed, in contrast to the algorithms of other less commercially successful monitors of electroencephalogram (EEG) activity under anesthesia. With the expiration of certain key patents, the time is therefore ripe to examine the operation of the monitor on its own term

Engineering Approaches to Assessing Hydration Status.

Dehydration is a common condition characterized by a decrease in total body water. Acute dehydration can cause physical and cognitive impairment, heat stroke and exhaustion, and, if severe and uncorrected, even death. The health effects of chronic mild dehydration are less well studied with urolithiasis (kidney stones) the only condition consistently associated with it. Aside from infants and those with particular medical conditions, athletes, military personnel, manual workers, and older adults are at particular risk of dehydration due to their physical activity, environmental exposure, and/o

[Bone fracture and the healing mechanisms. A new method for evaluation of fracture healing by echo tracking].

Assessment of bone healing on radiographs is not necessarily objective. A clinical system was developed to quantify the stiffness of healing fractures of the tibia in patients by the echo tracking (ET) method in a manner similar to a three-point bending test. The lower leg was supported. An ultrasound probe was placed on the proximal and distal fragments and a load of 25 N was applied. With a multiple ET system, two probes measured the displacement of five tracking points on each of the proximal and distal fragments of the tibia, thereby detecting the bending of the two fragments generated by

Engineering the phenylacetaldehyde reductase mutant for improved substrate conversion in the presence of concentrated 2-propanol.

Phenylacetaldehyde reductase (PAR) from Rhodococcus sp. ST-10 is useful for chiral alcohol production because of its broad substrate specificity and high stereoselectivity. The conversion of ketones into alcohols by PAR requires the coenzyme NADH. PAR can regenerate NADH by oxidizing additional alcohols, especially 2-propanol. However, substrate conversion by wild-type PAR is suppressed in concentrated 2-propanol. Previously, we developed the Sar268 mutant of PAR, which can convert several substrates in the presence of concentrated 2-propanol. In this paper, further mutational engineering of S

Effect of supraglottic mechanoreceptors on spatial mapping of respiratory related evoked responses using wavelet and Laplacian methods.

Respiratory related evoked potentials (RREPs) were recorded from eight normal subjects in response to brief pressure pulses of -10 cm H2O with a duration of 200 ms to identify the contribution of supralaryngeal mechanoreceptors to the evoked responses by constraining application of the stimulus to the larynx and sublaryngeal regions through insertion of a laryngeal mask airway (LMA). Wavelet decomposition of RREP responses from 30 electrodes on the right side of the scalp was performed for eight frequency scales in time. The RREPs at each wavelet scale were enhanced by eliminating the wavelet

Cartographic system for spatial distribution analysis of corneal endothelial cells.

A combined cartographic and morphometric endothelium analyser has been developed by integrating the HISTO 2000 histological imaging and analysis system with a prototype human corneal endothelium analyser. The complete system allows the elaboration and analysis of cartographies of corneal endothelial tissue, and hence the in vitro study of the spatial distribution of corneal endothelial cells, according to their regional morphometric characteristics (cell size and polygonality). The global cartographic reconstruction is obtained by sequential integration of the data analysed for each microscopi

In Vivo Membrane Engineering: An Approach to Remodeling Cell Interfaces.

The cell membrane is a crucial interface that maintains cellular homeostasis and facilitates intercellular communication, playing a key role in regenerative medicine and immune regulation. To improve cell-targeting ability, immune evasion, therapeutic efficacy, and durability, membrane engineering has modified cells using physical, chemical, or biological techniques. Recent research on in vivo membrane engineering has highlighted approaches that avoid the complex steps of cell extraction and re-injection in cell therapy. Thus, by performing modifications directly within the physiological envir

Blood Group Antigen Shielding Facilitated by Selective Cell Surface Engineering.

Production of red blood cells (RBCs) without immunogenicity of blood group antigens is of special interest in blood transfusion therapy in clinical chemistry. In this study, a selective cell surface engineering method was developed for the preparation of antigen-shielded RBCs based on molecular imprinting. Using an epitope imprinting method, biocompatible molecularly imprinted nanogels (MIgels) were prepared with a high affinity to the blood group antigens of RBCs. The antigen-shielded RBCs could avoid the agglutination caused by blood group mismatch, resulting in the antigen-shielded RBCs in

Time-dependent biaxial mechanical behavior of the aortic heart valve leaflet.

Despite continued progress in the treatment of aortic valve (AV) disease, current treatments continue to be challenged to consistently restore AV function for extended durations. Improved approaches for AV repair and replacement rests upon our ability to more fully comprehend and simulate AV function. While the elastic behavior the AV leaflet (AVL) has been previously investigated, time-dependent behaviors under physiological biaxial loading states have yet to be quantified. In the current study, we performed strain rate, creep, and stress-relaxation experiments using porcine AVL under planar

The revolutionary role of placental derivatives in biomedical research.

The human placenta is a transient yet crucial organ that plays a key role in sustaining the relationship between the maternal and fetal organisms. Despite its historical classification as "biowaste," placental tissues have garnered increasing attention since the early 1900s for their significant medical potential, particularly in wound repair and surgical application. As ethical considerations regarding human placental derivatives have largely been assuaged in many countries, they have gained significant attention due to their versatile applications in various biomedical fields, such as biomed

3D structured capillary cell suspensions aided by aqueous two-phase systems.

We report a facile technique for 3D structuring of living cells by forming capillary cell suspensions based on an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (DEX) solutions. We demonstrate the formation of water-in-water (DEX-in-PEG) capillary bridges using concentrated suspensions of yeast cells which show enhanced rheological properties and distinctive 3D patterns. Capillary structured cell suspensions can potentially find applications in novel ways of 3D cell culturing, instant tissue engineering and many biomedical investigations.
