Molluscicide activity of the "avelós" plant (Euphorbia tirucalli, L.) on Biomphalaria glabrata, the mollusc vector of schistosomiasis.

An aqueous solution of the latex of Euphorbia tirucalli collected at sites receiving large amounts of sunlight showed molluscicide action on Biomphalaria glabrata, with LD50 obtained at the concentration of 28,0 ppm and LD90 at the concentration of 85,0 ppm. The toxicity of the product for fish was similar to that of Bayluscide and of copper sulfate used for comparison. However, the wide distribution of the plant, its easy propagation and the simple procedure for extraction of the active substance, which is biodegradable, favor "avelós" as a promising agent in the control of schistosomiasis.

Experimental epidemiology of schistosomiasis. II. Prepatency of Schistosoma mansoni in Biomphalaria glabrata at diurnally fluctuating temperatures.

The basic hyperbolic relationship established between constant water temperatures and the length of the prepatent period in the snail was tested as diurnally fluctuating temperatures, stimulating natural conditions. Diurnal temperature variations are generally summed up by S. mansoni according to the time-temperature product and are independent of the shape of the temperature curve. Using a simple hyperbolic formula, the time of prepatency can be calculated for temperatures ranging from 16 degrees C to 32 degrees C. The developmental rate (reciprocal of the prepatency period) within this range

Life-stage-resolved toxicological assessment and environmental relevance of triclosan in the freshwater gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata.

TCS (triclosan) is frequently detected in freshwater compartments, including surface water, sediments, biosolids, and pore water; however, its life-stage-specific toxicity in gastropod mollusks remains insufficiently characterized. To address this gap, this study aimed to determine the life-stage-dependent lethal and sublethal toxicity of TCS in Biomphalaria glabrata and identify environmentally relevant endpoints for gastropod ecotoxicology and life-stage-aware ecotoxicological assessment. We applied a life-stage-resolved framework covering embryonic development, newly hatched juveniles, acut

Phylogeny, morphology, and haplotypic distribution of Biomphalaria straminea populations from the five geographic regions of Brazil.

Biomphalaria straminea is one of the three snails that act as the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni and is responsible for maintaining high rates of schistosomiasis in some areas of northeastern Brazil. The principal morphological characteristic of B. straminea is the marked vaginal wrinkling, although it is also present in congeneric species, a group known as the B. straminea complex. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, we investigated the intraspecific variation of B. straminea. The specimens were obtained from 10 sites in Brazil, and the shells were analyzed, as well

A genome sequence for Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the major vector snail for the human-infecting parasite Schistosoma mansoni.

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria pfeifferi is the world's most widely distributed and commonly implicated vector snail species for the causative agent of human intestinal schistosomiasis, Schistosoma mansoni. In efforts to control S. mansoni transmission, chemotherapy alone has proven insufficient. New approaches to snail control offer a way forward, and possible genetic manipulations of snail vectors will require new tools. Towards this end, we here offer a diverse set of genomic resources for the important African schistosome vector, B. pfeifferi. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Based largely on Pa

Field Application of NIR Spectroscopy for the Discrimination of the Biomphalaria Species That Are Intermediate Hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in Brazil.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is a spectroscopic technique that evaluates the vibrational energy levels of the chemical bonds of molecules within a wavelength range of 750-2,500 nm. This simple method acquires spectra that provide qualitative and quantitative data on the chemical components of the biomass of living organisms through the interaction between the electromagnetic waves and the sample. NIRS is an innovative, rapid, and non-destructive technique that can contribute to the differentiation of species based on their chemical phenotypes. Chemical profiles were obtained by NIRS from

Data set of the toxic effects of divaricatic acid depside on Biomphalaria glabrata and Schistosoma mansoni cercariae.

In this study, the molluscicidal and antiparasitic activities of divaricatic acid was evaluated, targeting the mollusc Biomphalaria glabrata and cercariae of the helminth Schistosoma mansoni. Divaricatic acid showed high toxicity against both adult snails (5.5 μg/mL) and embryos (20 μg/mL after 6 h of exposure). Similar activity was observed in S. mansoni cercariae after only a short exposure time. The divaricatic acid proved to be a promising substance for the control of the snail B. glabrata, an intermediate host of schistosomiasis, as well as the cercariae of the pathogen.

Spatial distribution and habitat suitability of Biomphalaria straminea, intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, in Guangdong, China.

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria straminea is an invasive vector in China, posing a significant threat to public health. Understanding the factors affecting the establishment of this snail is crucial to improve our ability to manage its dispersal and potential risk of schistosomiasis transmission. This study sought to determine the spatial distribution of B. straminea in mainland China and whether environmental factors were divergent between places with and without B. straminea. METHODS: A malacological survey of B. straminea was conducted in Guangdong Province, China. Snails were identified using an

Assessment of toxicity of Moringa oleifera flower extract to Biomphalaria glabrata, Schistosoma mansoni and Artemia salina.

This study reports the effect of an aqueous extract from Moringa oleifera Lam. flowers on Biomphalaria glabrata embryos and adults and on Schistosoma mansoni adult worms. The extract contains tannins, saponins, flavones, flavonols, xanthones, and trypsin inhibitor activity. The toxicity of the extract on Artemia salina larvae was also investigated to determine the safety of its use for schistosomiasis control. After incubation for 24h, the flower extract significantly (p<0.05) delayed the development of B. glabrata embryos and promoted mortality of adult snails (LC50: 2.37±0.5mgmL(-1)). Furthe

Fingerprint of Biomphalaria arabica, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in Saudi Arabia, using RAPD-PCR.

In the time schistosomisis control programs are implemented in many countries, schistosomiasis continues to spread throughout the world. Among these control strategies is the vector control. Within this context, analysis of the genetic variability of the intermediate host snails is important because it allows identification of specific sequences of the genome of this mollusk related to determine their fingerprint. We investigated Biomphalaria arabica, which is found in Saudi Arabia, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni infection. Genetic fingerprint was studied by RAPD-PCR using our ow

Participation of cell-free haemolymph of Biomphalaria tenagophila in the defence mechanism against Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts.

Biomphalaria tenagophila of Taim strain is able to completely destroy Schistosoma mansoni sporocyst few hours after parasite penetration, although the mechanism is still not well known. In this experimental work we show that passive transference of cell-free haemolymph, especially from B. tenagophila Taim, resulted in higher resistance of B. tenagophila Cabo Frio to S. mansoni infection. This effect was demonstrated in vivo, by the reduction in the infection rate, and the significantly lower production of sporocysts and cercariae of the parasite in snails treated with Taim cell-free haemolymph

Experimental control of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, by the ampullariid snail Lanistes varicus.

The biological control of the snail hosts of the trematodes that cause human schistosomiasis appears to be a promising method for achieving sustainable reductions in the transmission of the parasites. The possibility of using the Ghanaian strain of an ampullariid snail, Lanistes varicus, for the biological control of the main snail host of Schistosoma mansoni , Biomphalaria pfeifferi, has now been investigated in laboratory-based experiments. Adult and 2-week-old L. varicus were found to feed voraciously on the egg masses and juveniles of B. pfeifferi (from the Tono irrigation canals in northe

Compatibility of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails to infection with Schistosoma mansoni after exposure to sublethal concentrations of Myrrh.

The effect of exposing B. alexandrina to sub-lethal dose (LC10 & LC20) of Myrrh, on its susceptibility to infection with S. mansoni miracidia were determined. Starting three weeks post miracidial exposure, cercarial shedding was monitored. No shedding of cercariae were observed from snails treated with LC20. In snails treated with LC10, longer prepatent cercarial and shorter cercarial production periods than those of control group were recorded. The number of infected snails and of shedding cercariae were decreased. The study revealed that sublethal values of myrrh decreased the compatibility

A possible role for an enkephalinergic system in the internal defense mechanism of Biomphalaria alexandrina exposed to Schistosoma mansoni.

The present study documents that in Bioniphalaria alexandrina coordinated responses to Schistosoma mansoni infection are modulated by receptor-mediated opioid signals. Rather comprehensive tests in susceptible and resistant snails have demonstrated: I- the presence of an endogenaus opioids in the snail hemolymph (in particular, Leu-enkephalin-like material). II- in vitro treatment of snail hemocytes with synthetic Leu-enkephalin analogue (DADLE) resulted in the modulation of cellular adherence, and phagocytic activity. III- the addition of Naloxone, either alone or in combination whith DADLE,

Involvement of nitric oxide in killing of Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts by hemocytes from resistant Biomphalaria glabrata.

In strains of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropoda) that are resistant to the parasite Schistosoma mansoni (Trematoda), hemocytes in the hemolymph are responsible for elimination of S. mansoni sporocysts. The defensive role of reactive nitrogen species was investigated in in vitro interactions between hemocytes derived from the resistant 13-16-R1 strain of B. glabrata and the parasite. The nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methylester (L-NAME) and the nitric oxide (NO) scavenger 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide reduced cell-

Phenoloxidase activity in the reproductive system of Biomphalaria glabrata: role in egg production and effect of schistosome infection.

Infection by larval trematodes often causes a cessation of egg production in its molluscan intermediate host and is referred to as parasitic castration. Because phenoloxidase (PO) has been shown to be involved in egg formation in other invertebrate species, we investigated the role of PO in normal egg production in the snail, Biomphalaria glabrata, and the effects of Schistosoma mansoni infection on the PO pathway in this snail. Our data showed that PO activity in the albumen gland (AG) is initially expressed when snails reach a size of approximately 8 mm in shell diameter and continues to inc

Dynamics of the leukocytic response of Biomphalaria glabrata during the larval development of Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma liei.

The daily evolution of the number of hemocytes in Biomphalaria glabrata was ascertained under three conditions: uninfected snails, snails infected with Schistosoma mansoni, and snails infected with Echinostoma liei. The Results show differences between the three experiments as well as in the average hemocyte density over the whole experimental period, as in the temporal dynamics of circulating hemocyte number. Specifically, it appears that the development of E. liei in B. glabrata induces a density of circulating hemocytes greater than that in uninfected B. glabrata or in snails infected with
