Combating antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture: the stakeholders survey in Nigeria.

The aquaculture practices have contributed immensely to the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in developing countries where antibiotic use is often poorly regulated. This study employed a cross-sectional survey design to assess the perceptions, knowledge, and practices among stakeholders in Nigerian aquaculture regarding AMR, with a particular focus on biosecurity measures. A one-day stakeholder engagement was conducted at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, involving 97 participants, including 40 researchers, 30 aquaculture farmers, 19 government officials, and 8 ot

Backyard poultry: exploring non-intensive production systems.

The concept of backyard poultry historically encompassed "food-producing animals." Nevertheless, a recent shift in livestock production paradigms within developed countries is evident, as backyard poultry owners now raise their birds for purposes beyond self-consumption, raising animals in a familiar way, and fostering emotional bonds with them. Because backyard animals are frequently privately owned, and the resulting products are typically not marketed, very little information is available about the demographic profile of backyard owners and information on flocks' characteristics, husbandry,

The feasibility and acceptability of various bovine brucellosis control strategies in India.

Bovine brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic disease prevalent in several developing countries including India. It has been successfully controlled in many developed countries by using vaccination in conjunction with extensive surveillance and test-and-cull approaches, but some of these approaches do not suit Indian culture and norms. This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility and social acceptability of various bovine brucellosis control strategies in India. Focus group discussions and key-informant interviews were conducted with veterinarians, para-veterinarians, veterinary academ

Assessment of Risk Factors for a High Within-Batch Prevalence of Yersinia enterocolitica in Pigs Based on Microbiological Analysis at Slaughter.

The purpose of the current study was to find farm-level factors influencing the bacteriological prevalence of Yersinia enterocolitica in pigs at time of slaughter. On 100 farms, data concerning a broad range of farm aspects (e.g., management and housing system, biosecurity, and hygiene measurements) were collected using a face-to-face questionnaire. At the slaughterhouse, tonsils of on average 70 slaughter pigs per batch were sampled to determine the infection status of pigs. After univariable mixed-effect logistic regressions, variables that were related to the Yersinia prevalence (p<0.05) we

Evaluation of methods for early detection of Tropilaelaps mites in European honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies.

Tropilaelaps mites are emerging ectoparasitic parasites of European honey bees (Apis mellifera) that pose a serious threat to apiculture and pollination security globally. There is a paucity of evidence to support current detection methods used in biosecurity programs. We conducted field trials in Papua New Guinea using 27 infested A. mellifera colonies across six apiaries to evaluate six Tropilaelaps detection methods: bump test, alcohol wash, modified rapid brood uncapping, worker brood uncapping, environmental DNA (eDNA) swabs, and sticky mats with an acaricide. eDNA swabs and acaricides wi

Social, economic, and transboundary importance of foot and mouth disease quarantines in East Africa.

Although quarantines are vital for managing the spread of highly contagious livestock diseases, like foot and mouth disease (FMD) in East Africa, they can also create burdens for rural households whose livelihoods rely on the mobility and sale of their animals. In this paper, we used novel data from an outbreak of FMD to evaluate the importance of Ugandan livestock quarantines for 231 rural, livestock-owning households at the border of Uganda and Tanzania. Summary statistics and multivariate probit models evaluate the transboundary effects of quarantine restrictions on movement (human and inte

Infectious diseases in free-range compared to conventional poultry production.

Commercial chicken production for the supply of meat and eggs has expanded in the scale and variety of production systems in use to facilitate the supply of a range of cost-effective products in response to consumer demand. In the egg sector, traditional cage systems were required to be replaced in the EU by 2012, and most of this production capacity has been replaced by colony cage systems, which provide more space, perching, and environmental enrichment. In some countries there is significant production of "cage-free" or "barn" eggs in which the birds remain housed, but have access to litter

The live poultry trade and the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza: Regional differences between Europe, West Africa, and Southeast Asia.

In the past two decades, avian influenzas have posed an increasing international threat to human and livestock health. In particular, highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has spread across Asia, Africa, and Europe, leading to the deaths of millions of poultry and hundreds of people. The two main means of international spread are through migratory birds and the live poultry trade. We focus on the role played by the live poultry trade in the spread of H5N1 across three regions widely infected by the disease, which also correspond to three major trade blocs: the European Union (EU), the Economi

Farmer field schools as interventions to reduce the need for antimicrobials in agrifood systems: a longitudinal analysis of layer farmer field school graduates and non-graduates in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Addressing antimicrobial resistance in agri-food systems requires both AMR-specific interventions, which target factors directly impacting AMR (e.g., prescription regulations) and AMR-sensitive interventions, which target factors indirectly impacting AMR transmission (e.g. biosecurity). An approach that can incorporate both AMR-sensitive and AMR-specific interventions is the Farmer Field School approach (FFS), where farmers meet on a demonstration farm to engage/experiment with best production practices across a production cycle. Here, we assess the impacts FFS on AMR-specific and

Orthopox viruses: is the threat growing?

BACKGROUND: Smallpox was a major cause of human mortality until its eradication, but the threat of orthopox viruses has not disappeared. Since the eradication of smallpox and the cessation of the related vaccination campaigns, the threat has been growing, as evidenced by the currently ongoing worldwide Mpox outbreak. In addition to threats of an evolving Mpox, we must also be aware of a myriad of other threats that remain. Many countries still lack biosecurity regulations reflecting the recent technological advances, and the threat of bioterrorism remains ever present. Reconstruction of smallp

Farm management and breeding-related animal movement associated with African swine fever risk in smallholder pig farms in West Timor, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious transboundary animal disease that has led to substantial economic losses in smallholder pig production systems around the world. Some of the possible explanations for why ASF transmission still occurs in Indonesia, particularly West Timor, are traditional husbandry practices and poor biosecurity implementations. This study aimed to identify potential pig farm-level risk factors for ASF in smallholder farming systems of West Timor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 300 smallholder pig farms. Structured

Evaluating preventive measures for the zoonotic transmission of swine influenza A variant at agricultural fairs in the United States: a mathematical modeling study.

INTRODUCTION: Swine exhibitions at agricultural fairs serve as unique environments where humans and pigs interact, and swine influenza A can spill over. As agricultural fairs present a substantial risk for zoonotic influenza outbreaks and potential pandemics, it is paramount to identify efficient preventive measures for mitigating the risk of variant influenza A transmission from pigs to humans at swine exhibitions. METHODS: We developed a mathematical model of swine influenza A variant transmission at agricultural fairs. We fitted the model to empirical data of a 2011 zoonotic outbreak at a

Observations on the distribution and control of Salmonella in commercial broiler hatcheries in Great Britain.

Salmonella can enter hatcheries via contaminated eggs and other breaches of biosecurity. The study examined the prevalence and distribution of Salmonella in commercial hatcheries and assessed the effects of providing advice on Salmonella control. Intensive swab sampling was performed throughout 23 broiler hatcheries in Great Britain (GB). Swabs were cultured using a modified ISO6579:2017 method. After each visit, tailored advice on biosecurity and cleaning and disinfection procedures was provided to the hatchery managers. Repeat sampling was carried out in 10 of the 23 hatcheries. Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Swine: Implications for Public Health.

Toxoplasmosis, due to Toxoplasma gondii, is a parasitic disease with global importance. Among livestock, chronic T. gondii infection has been reported in higher rates in pigs and small ruminants, but with subclinical infections in case commonly encountered in pigs. Seroprevalence in the global pig population ranges according to the age or species of pigs, geographical distribution, production programs, and systems. Generally, T. gondii infections are noticed in low prevalence rates in conventional pig farms with high hygiene standards. In contrast, higher prevalence is common on free-ranging f

Gamma-irradiation of common biological samples for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope and elemental analyses.

RATIONALE: Around the world biosecurity measures are being strengthened to prevent the spread of pests and diseases across national and international borders. Quarantine protocols that involve sample sterilisation have potential effects on sample integrity. The consequences of sterilisation methods such as gamma (γ)-irradiation on the elemental and chemical properties of biological samples have not been widely examined. METHODS: We tested the effect of γ-irradiation (50 kGy) on the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions (δ13 C and δ15 N values) and elemental concentrations (C % and N

Infectious risk in French breeding kennels: A practice-based typology centered on Brucella canis.

Brucella canis (B. canis) has re-emerged in Western Europe, causing outbreaks in French breeding kennels. Although individual practices have been described, a practice-based typology relevant to B. canis and other infectious risks has been lacking. An online descriptive survey was conducted among dog breeders across multiple French regions between June 2024 and April 2025. The questionnaire addressed breeding and dog movement patterns, pre-introduction and routine testing, and facility-level biosecurity (zoning, hygiene/disinfection, personal protective equipment [PPE], and visitor or movement
