Blindness and glaucoma: a comparison of patients progressing to blindness from glaucoma with patients maintaining vision.

PURPOSE: To compare patients becoming legally blind from glaucoma with those who did not go blind. DESIGN: Retrospective, cohort, and case-control study. METHODS: A retrospective community-based longitudinal study of residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, who were newly diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma between 1965 and 1980 and followed through 1998. A case-control study was performed comparing patients progressing to legal blindness from glaucoma with aged-matched and visual field-matched patients not progressing to blindness. RESULTS: Fifty-six of 290 patients progressed to legal blind

Blindness in Mentally Retarded Children. A survey of the causes of blindness in 201 notified patients.

A preliminary survey of the causes of blindness in mentally retarded children in Denmark showed that 50% of the children had optic atrophy, 12.5% had cataract while tapeto-retinal degenerations, other malformation and retrolental fibroplasia each represents 8-9% of the causes of blindness. The survey, was done through written notification and some patients with tapeto-retinal degenerations might have been wrongly diagnosed.

Choice Blindness in a Military Setting.

ObjectiveWe examined the impact of choice blindness in applied military contexts.BackgroundChoice Blindness occurs in intention-directed decision making when an individual fails to detect when a previously chosen option is covertly changed and confabulates, providing a false justification for why they selected the non-chosen option. Approximately 67-75% of people show Choice Blindness when tested.MethodWe investigated Choice Blindness in simulated military tasks using two experiments. Novices (Experiment 1) and experts (Experiment 2) went through an all-source intelligence, surveillance, and r

Hepatic Encephalopathy Induced Transient Cortical Blindness.

Hepatic encephalopathy describes a spectrum of potentially reversible neuropsychiatric abnormalities seen in a patient with severe liver dysfunction with porto-systemic shunting. Cortical blindness can be a rare presentation of hepatic encephalopathy and can even precede the onset of altered sensorium. We report a case of 57 years female with chronic liver disease who presented with bilateral loss of vision, with no focal neurological deficits. From clinical and laboratory examination, a diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy with cortical blindness was proposed. Her visual disturbances gradually

Prevention of Blindness in Stickler Syndrome.

Stickler syndromes are inherited conditions caused by abnormalities of structural proteins in the eye, inner ear and cartilage. The risk of retinal detachment, particularly due to the development of giant retinal tears, is high. Stickler syndrome is the most common cause of childhood retinal detachment. Although retinal detachment surgery in the general population has a high success rate, outcomes from surgical repair in Stickler syndrome patients are notoriously poor, providing a strong argument for prophylactic intervention. Variable case selection, absence of molecular genetic sub-typing an

Masking Colour Blindness: A Case Report.

Colour vision is an important aspect of visual function that might help individuals in doing daily activities. Some occupations require and test for good colour discrimination. We describe a case of a 20-year-old man who was referred to our centre to establish if he had colour vision deficiency (CVD). He had been tested for this twice as part of his assessment to enter the police force. At the first examination, he had normal colour vision, while the second examination revealed CVD, thus the patient was referred for confirmation. Colour vision tests using the Ishihara plates showed normal resu

Congenital Blindness and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Emily is a 10-year-old girl who is in fifth grade. She has known congenital blindness secondary to septo-optic dysplasia with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia and precocious puberty. Emily was referred to a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics clinic for concerns of academic, social, and language challenges.Emily was born at term gestation after an uncomplicated pregnancy. At 4 months of age, she underwent ophthalmologic evaluation because of nystagmus, reduced visual tracking and response to light, and increased startle response to touch. An magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbits d

Reversible Blindness Following Orbital Fracture Repair.

The authors report a case of a 72-year-old woman with unilateral, complete, reversible blindness (no light perception) immediately after uncomplicated repair of an orbital floor fracture. In this case, vision loss was reversed with prompt surgical intervention with removal of the orbital floor implant. The authors review the etiology of vision loss after orbital fracture repair and hypothesize as to the cause of blindness in this case. Given the frequency with which orbital fracture repair is performed by a variety of surgical subspecialists, it is imperative for surgeons to be familiar with t

A Rare Hydrocephalus Complication: Cortical Blindness.

Cortical blindness related to bilateral occipital lobe infarction is an extremely rare complication of hydrocephalus. Compression of the posterior cerebral artery, secondary to tentorial herniation, is the cause of occipital infarction. Particularly in children and mentally ill patients, cortical blindness may be missed. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus is important. We present herein a child of ventricular shunt malfunction complicated by cortical blindness.

Vision after 53 years of blindness.

Several studies have shown that visual recovery after blindness that occurs early in life is never complete. The current study investigated whether an extremely long period of blindness might also cause a permanent impairment of visual performance, even in a case of adult-onset blindness. We examined KP, a 71-year-old man who underwent a successful sight-restoring operation after 53 years of blindness. A set of psychophysical tests designed to assess KP's face perception, object recognition, and visual space perception abilities were conducted six months and eight months after the surgery. The

Blindness from orbital varices: case report.

A 41-year-old woman presented with a 21-year history of a left orbital mass. She reported 3 distinct episodes of sudden proptosis, periorbital bruising, pain, nausea and vomiting with resulting stepwise deterioration in her vision. Her symptoms resolved spontaneously over several days, with the exception of loss in vision, which persisted. Examination was notable for ipsilateral enophthalmos in primary gaze. With Valsalva she developed proptosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a left orbital apex malformation consistent with a varix. She had no light perception on the left with

[Acute pancreatitis presenting as sudden blindness].

CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old man with a history of alcohol abuse presented with sudden blindness. The ophthalmologic examination showed Purtscher-like retinopathy. The presumed diagnosis was acute pancreatitis, which was confirmed by complementary laboratory studies. DISCUSSION: Sudden acute visual loss with Purstcher-like retinopathy may be present in acute pancreatitis, although it is a very rare as a presenting symptom. Early diagnosis based on ophthalmic symptoms may help in the recognition and treatment of the disease and prevent later complications.

Congenital blindness and osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome.

Isteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome (OPPG) is a rare heritable entity that features severe osteoporosis and many variable ophthalmic findings leading to congenital or juvenile blindness. These include microphthalmos, cataracts, bilateral pseudogliomatous retinal detachments, and phthisis bulbi. OPPG is usually not suspected until fractures occur, frequently after seemingly minor trauma. We report the ophthalmic findings of an infant girl with OPPG.
