A 34-year-old housewife with alcohol dependence vomited severely, lost consciousness, and died after she took more than 20 ml of 1% calcium cyanamide, and alcoholic beverage containing about 129 g of ethyl alcohol. An autopsy was performed around 16 h after death. The body weighed 55.5 kg, and moderate lung edema was found. Ethanol concentrations were 4.24 mg/g in the left heart blood, 4.39 mg/g in the right heart blood, and 21.55 mg/g in the stomach contents. Cyanamide concentrations were 0.63 microgram/g in the left heart blood, 0.20 microgram/g in the right heart blood, and 0.22 microgram/g

Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an alcohol biomarker formed from phosphatidylcholine (PC) by the enzyme phospholipase D (PLD) in the presence of ethanol. A drinking study revealed individual differences in maximum PEth levels after drinking to a targeted blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.1%. This seemed to be due to different PLD activities in the tested persons. Furthermore, post-sampling formation of PEth occurred in blood samples, still containing alcohol. Therefore, a standardized in vitro test for measuring individual PEth formation rates was developed. Two PLD inhibitors were tested f

A study of acute alcohol influence (heavy drinker) on sudden unexpected death were analyzed as to age, sex, cause of death and along with the lethal blood alcohol content. Excess alcohol abuse by adults or middle aged women causatived acute intoxication with actual toxic depression of brainstem function (high blood levels, means 3,6 mg/g). Others (alcohol abuse) die by drowning, trauma, sudden coronary death (drinking spirits), cardiomyopathy, hypothermia or hypoglycemia (Diabetes). The autopsy findings are discussed.

The research results of level glycemia, contents of free radical oxidation products (thiobarbiturate-reactive substances, oxidized-modified proteins) in blood plasma and heart of diabetes mellitus rats with chronic alcohol intoxication are presented. It is shown, that at presence of a diabetes mellitus the chronic alcohol consumption does not change blood plasma levels of the oxidized-modified proteins, thiobarbiturate-reactive substances and glucose. However the contents of thiobarbiturate-reactive substances and oxidizing modification of proteins products in animals heart is more considerabl

Alcohol is one of the most consumed psychoactive substances in the world, and the negative impact related to alcohol use has become a worldwide public health issue. Alcohol is able to affect diffusely several areas of the Central Nervous System, which could impair visual functions, including eye movements, and cognitive processes. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of moderate alcohol intake in eyes movements, as an indicator of cognitive processing underlying the visual search in a the Maze task. We investigated the concentration of 0.08% blood alcohol concentra

UNLABELLED: Topicality: Providing assistance to patients with polytrauma, in a state of alcohol intoxication, complicated by alcoholic delirium, is a serious problem when providing anesthesia care and, in particular, choosing drugs for sedation. Considering the severity of mechanical damage, complications associated with alcohol intoxication and serious biochemical disorders of the body, namely carbohydrate, lipid metabolism, electrolyte changes, on which the activity of all systems depends, it is necessary to study the influence on the course of these processes, depending on the choice of the

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend endotracheal intubation in trauma patients with a Glasgow coma scale (GCS) < 9 because of the loss of airway reflexes and consequential risk of airway obstruction. However, in patients with acute alcohol intoxication guidelines are not clear. Thus, we aimed to determine the proportional incidence of intubation in alcohol intoxication and compare the clinical characteristics of intubated and non-intubated patients, as well as reasons for intubation in all patients and in the subgroup of patients with reduced GCS (< 9) but without traumatic brain injury.

The mean population age of the United States continues to increase, and data suggest that by the year 2060 the population of people over the age of 65 will more than double, providing a potentially massive strain on health care systems. Research demonstrates individuals 65 and older continue to consume ethanol, often at high levels. However, preclinical animal models are still being developed to understand how ethanol might interact with the aged population. The current experiments investigated differential body temperature responses in aged rats compared to adult rats and adolescent rats. Age

As a result of extensive alcohol research conducted on both humans and animals, it is possible to predict a BAC, given pertinent data. In addition, it is possible to estimate from a given BAC the quantity of alcohol consumed. Caution must be used in these predictions, for certain factors will affect the final estimation. Absorption of alcohol is influenced by gastrointestinal contents and motility, and also the composition and quantity of the alcoholic beverage. The vascularity of tissues influences the distribution of alcohol, and their water content will determine the amount of alcohol prese

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is associated with a higher increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), but the acute effects on cardiac electrophysiology in humans remain poorly understood. The HOw ALcohol InDuces Atrial TachYarrhythmias (HOLIDAY) Trial revealed that alcohol shortened pulmonary vein atrial effective refractory periods, but more global electrophysiologic changes gleaned from the surface ECG have not yet been reported.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the HOLIDAY Trial. During AF ablation procedures, 100 adults were randomized to intravenous alcohol titrated to 0.08%

BACKGROUND: Although alcohol breath testing devices that pair with smartphones are promoted for the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving, their accuracy has not been established.
METHODS: In a within-subjects laboratory study, we administered weight-based doses of ethanol to two groups of 10 healthy, moderate drinkers aiming to achieve a target peak blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.10%. We obtained a peak phlebotomy BAC and measured breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) with a police-grade device (Intoxilyzer 240) and two randomly ordered series of 3 consumer smartphone-paired devices (

AIMS: Ethanol is a widespread substance that inherits desired effects, but also negative consequences with regard to DUI or battery. Where required, the ethanol concentration is usually determined in peripheral venous blood samples, while the brain is the target organ of the ethanol effects. The aim of this study with three participants was the determination of the ethanol concentration in functionally relevant regions of the brain and the comparison with serum ethanol concentrations.
DESIGN: After the uptake of ethanol in a calculated amount, leading to a serum ethanol concentration of 0.99

The concept of autoerotic asphyxiation refers to the use of devices or substances intended to enhance one's arousal by inducing cerebral hypoxia, which can involuntarily lead to death. Although in most cases death occurs accidentally, it is nonetheless true that the same devices might be used by the practitioners in order to attempt suicide. The case of a 34-year-old practitioner of autoerotic asphyxiation found dead in his apartment with bondage-like ligatures and masking is reported here. The case raised some issues concerning the accidental or suicidal nature of the act. The aspects taken i
