Beyond respiratory syncytial virus and rhinovirus: The other viral respiratory bandits.

Asthma affects approximately 25 million people in the United States, with respiratory viruses playing a significant role in both the onset and exacerbations of the condition. Although rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the most well-known triggers, other iratory viruses playing a significant role in both the on, human parainfluenza virus, human bocavirus, enterovirus D68, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 are increasingly recognized for their significant impact on asthma. These viruses contribute to both the development of asthma and exacerbations by inducing airway inflammation, dis

Detection and molecular characterization of enteric viruses in children with acute gastroenteritis in Northern Italy.

Enteric viral infections are a major concern for public health, and viral acute gastroenteritis is the principal cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide, mostly in developing countries. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of different enteric viruses detected in a pediatric population with acute gastroenteritis symptoms, and to characterize the strains detected. Stools were collected from children, aged from 2 months to 15 years old, admitted to one of the main hospitals of Northern Italy, between November 2015 and October 2016. Stools were tested for nine en

Co-existence of multiple strains of two novel porcine bocaviruses in the same pig, a previously undescribed phenomenon in members of the family Parvoviridae, and evidence for inter- and intra-host genetic diversity and recombination.

Despite the recent discovery of novel bocaviruses from porcine samples, their genetic evolution and diversity are poorly understood. This study reports the identification and complete genome characterization of two novel parvoviruses, porcine bocavirus 3 (PBoV3) and porcine bocavirus 4 (PBoV4), from various porcine tissues/samples, displaying marked intra- and inter-host genetic diversity, with recombination events. Bocaviruses were detected by PCR among 16.5 % (55/333) of porcine samples (lymph nodes, serum, nasopharyngeal and faecal samples) from healthy, sick or deceased pigs from farms and

Original antigenic sin with human bocaviruses 1-4.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) 1 is a widespread parvovirus causing acute respiratory disease in young children. In contrast, HBoV2 occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and is potentially associated with gastroenteritis, whilst HBoV3 and -4 infections are less frequent and have not yet been linked with human disease. Due to HBoV1 DNA persistence in the nasopharynx, serology has been advocated as a better alternative for diagnosing acute infections. In constitutionally healthy children, we previously noted that pre-existing HBoV2 immunity in a subsequent HBoV1 infection typically resulted in low or non

[A review of detection methods for human bocaviruses].

Human bocavirus (HBoV) 1-4 have been detected both in respiratory and stool samples since the first HBoV was discovered in 2005. HBoV-1 is mostly associated with respiratory infection, while HBoV 2-4 are usually associated with intestinal tract infection. A variety of signs and symptoms have been described in patients with HBoV infection, including cough, wheezing, pneumonia, and diarrhea, but the research on pathogenic mechanism of HBoV is limited because HBoV cannot be cultured in vitro due to the lack of appropriate host cells. Co-detection in the pathogenesis of severe hand-foot-mouth disease.

It still needs to be elucidated whether co-detection of EV71 with other intestinal tract viruses plays a role in the pathogenesis of severe hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD). A total of 680 stool specimens collected from clinically diagnosed mild and severe-HFMD patients were tested for EV71, CA16, norovirus, bocavirus and rotavirus. The results showed that EV71 was significantly associated with severe-HFMD patients. Co-detection of EV71 with norovirus and rotavirus was also significantly associated with severe-HFMD patients: The OR (95 % CI) value was 6.466 (2.735, 15.283) and 7.561 (3.560, 16.0

Virologic study of acute lower respiratory tract infections in children admitted to the paediatric department of Blida University Hospital, Algeria.

Acute lower respiratory tract infections (ALRTI) such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis are major causes of mortality and morbidity in children under 5 years of age. The main microbial agents responsible for ALRTI are either bacterial agents (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Mycoplasma pneumoniae) or viruses (respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, also known as human orthopneumovirus), Myxovirus influenzae, Myxovirus parainfluenzae, adenovirus) [1]. More recently, other viruses (rhinovirus, metapneumovirus, coronavirus, bocavirus) have been implicated in ALRTI; their identifica

Sole pathogen in acute bronchiolitis: is there a role for other organisms apart from respiratory syncytial virus?

BACKGROUND: Acute bronchiolitis (AB) is a common disease of young children with peak incidence during the winter season. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major causative organism, yet recent relatively small sized studies have suggested an increased role of other organisms as sole or codetected organisms. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of sole- and mixed-organisms infections in hospitalized children with AB, using combined antigen-based and polymerase chain reaction assays (PCR). METHODS: Sputum or nasal wash specimens obtained from 490 previously healthy children <
