We investigated the relationships between healthy women's estimates of their own body size, their body dissatisfaction, and how they subjectively judge the transition from normal to overweight in other women's bodies (the "normal/overweight" boundary). We propose two complementary hypotheses. In the first, participants compare other women to an internalized Western "thin ideal," whose size reflects the observer's own body dissatisfaction. As dissatisfaction increases, so the size of their "thin ideal" reduces, predicting an inverse relationship between the "normal/overweight" boundary and part

BACKGROUND: Men tend to give more importance than women to physical aspects when selecting a partner; thus, the internalization of beauty standards and the ideal of thinness may be greater in populations attracted to men, placing them at a higher risk of eating disorders.
METHODS: In a sample (n = 398) of heterosexual and gay men and women, we evaluated the drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and bulimic symptomatology. Using ANCOVAs, we analyzed the differences in symptoms score according to sex, sexual orientation and relational status including body mass index (BMI) as covariate; we

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the self-esteem of patients with bulimia nervosa was more contingent on body satisfaction than that of nonpsychiatric control and of depressed participants.
METHODS: Patients with bulimia nervosa (selected according to DSM-III-based structured clinical interviews), those with depression (selected based on chart diagnoses), and nonpsychiatric control samples completed measures of body dissatisfaction and of global self-esteem.
RESULTS: Consistent with past work, we found that body dissatisfaction accounted for a greater amount of global self-esteem among bulimia

Increasing knowledge about body image dissatisfaction and risk factors during pregnancy will provide opportunities to develop targeted interventions. This study examined body image and associated factors during pregnancy cross-sectionally. Data were collected from 931 pregnant women using a descriptive form and the Pregnancy Body Image Scale. Analyses used t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, regression, and path analysis. The study found that advanced age (β = .10), gestational weight gain (β = .17), health problems during pregnancy (β = .12), and low income (β = .16) increased body image dis

Exposure to different types of images on social media is known to affect physical and mental wellbeing including changes in perception of body image (BI) and dietary behavior. The present study aimed to assess the effects of junk food-related Instagram content exposure on body image, overall mood, and cravings in young adults. A randomized crossover experimental design was used. After filling out a baseline survey, participants (n = 63, aged 18-24) browsed either a control Instagram account feed or an account rich in junk food images during 15 min. They then filled a short survey evaluating th

Empirical data, predominantly from young women, suggest photo-based social media use is associated with greater body dissatisfaction. The present study aimed to extend these findings to midlife women and identify risk profiles for maladaptive appearance-focused social media use. A convenience sample of female Instagram users aged 40 or over (M= 50.92 years) (n = 192) was collected. Most participants were partnered, white, highly educated, and heterosexual. A cluster analysis in cross-sectional data grouped participants into four categories according to body image indices (following body positi

BACKGROUND: In line with modern-day beauty ideals, many adolescent girls strive to have a slender figure. Thus, low body weight is expected to be related to greater body satisfaction and self-esteem in adolescent girls. However, for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) this is often not the case: despite being underweight, they exhibit high levels of body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. Negative cognitive biases for information related to one's body might explain this disconnection between body weight and body (dis)satisfaction/self-esteem in adolescents with AN. The present study explo

Body image is multidimensional and less is known about how the combination of positive and negative body image relates to eating behaviors. We used a person-centered approach to identify profiles of body image and explore the relationship between profile membership, sex, age, race, and current marital status, and eating behaviors in a community sample of adults. We recruited 288 adults 18 and older living in the United States using Prolific Academic. Participants completed an online survey assessing body appreciation, functionality appreciation, body dissatisfaction, weight bias internalizatio

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young adults with CF (AYAwCF) are at increased risk of body image concerns due to a historical focus on weight gain, BMI, and adequate nutrition. Societal ideals create even greater risk. Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) dramatically improved outcomes in CF, including contributing to weight gain. To date, no research has examined body image and adherence to ETI in AYAwCF. This study examines perspectives of AYAwCF on how body image may relate to ETI adherence.
METHODS: Participants (n = 52) who were prescribed ETI for at least 6 months completed a series of

This study aimed to investigate the status of body image among pregnant women and identify associated factors using latent profile analysis (LPA). This cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 460 pregnant women in the gynecology outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Zunyi between December 2023 and April 2024. Data on body image, demographic characteristics, quality of life, and E-health literacy were collected. Then, multiple stepwise linear regression was conducted to identify risk factors associated with level of maternal body image in the study participants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Body exposure and cognitive restructuring are well known interventions in cognitive-behavioral therapies for patients with eating disorders. Though promising, little is known about the impact of body exposure on body dissatisfaction, overvaluation of weight and shape and other aspects of eating disorder psychopathology. Thus, the aim of the two studies presented here is to evaluate the efficacy of mirror exposure and video exposure on body dissatisfaction, weight and shape concerns and other aspects of eating disorder psychopathology. Despite research findings demonstrating a relationship between dissociation and binge eating, the psychological processes that may underlie this association remain unclear. The present study examined 2 potential explanations: (a) that dissociation disinhibits behavioral control over eating and (b) that dissociation interferes with self-awareness and undermines body image. A total of 151 female university students completed measures of dissociation, body dissatisfaction, impulsivity, internalization of the thin ideal, body comparison, and binge eating. Correlations confirmed the presence of a r

Perfectionism has been suggested as a risk factor relevant to multiple psychological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (ED). However, it remains unclear how perfectionism contributes to general and specific psychopathology. Disorder-specific processes (e.g. body dissatisfaction, responsibility) between perfectionism and subsequent symptoms may offer an explanation. The current study examined longitudinal associations between perfectionism, body dissatisfaction or responsibility, and symptoms of ED or OCD. A community sample of 499 women (18-30) compl

Body dissatisfaction is a core feature of eating disorders (EDs) and plays an essential role in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). In the current study, a computer based body exposure intervention is conducted and evaluated regarding short-term effects on body dissatisfaction, psychopathology, viewing patterns, and stress reactivity. Within a randomized controlled trial (RCT) female adolescents and young women with AN are either receiving the intervention or treatment as usual (TAU). Furthermore, in a transdiagnostic approach, a highly body-dissatisfied group of clinical

BACKGROUND: Biopsychosocial factors have been associated with body satisfaction/dissatisfaction and related body image concerns in adolescence; however, few studies have investigated these relationships in middle childhood, an important developmental phase for body satisfaction. This study investigated relationships between a range of biological (body mass index), psychological (child anxiety/depression, self-esteem, and self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism) and sociocultural (mother's body dissatisfaction and comments about child's appearance, father's body dissatisfaction and

In an attempt to explore the possibly adaptive function obesity may serve for some women with histories of sexual trauma, we examined relationships among sexual abuse history, body dissatisfaction, and maximum weight fluctuation among obese (n = 38; Body Mass Index > or = 27.3) and nonobese (n = 112; Body Mass Index < 27.3) women sampled from a primary care medical setting. History of sexual abuse was unrelated to current body weight within the entire sample, as well as the nonobese and the obese subsamples. However, the interaction between obesity and sexual abuse was statistically significan

Body dissatisfaction is prevalent and central to eating disorders. Cognitive-behavioral and sociocultural models suggest that maladaptive body-related schemas may bias visual attention toward one's own body. Eye-tracking provides a spatially precise method for quantifying gaze allocation, yet findings remain fragmented across populations and paradigms. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we systematically reviewed 33 eye-tracking studies examining region-level visual attention to one's own body in eating disorder, subclinical, and nonclinical samples. Across paradigms, participants often allocat

We combined virtual reality and multisensory bodily illusion with the aim to characterize and reduce the perceptual (body overestimation) and the cognitive-emotional (body dissatisfaction) components of body image distortion (BID) in anorexia nervosa (AN). For each participant (20 anorexics, 20 healthy controls) we built personalized avatars that reproduced their own body size, shape, and verisimilar increases and losses of their original weight. Body overestimation and dissatisfaction were measured by asking participants to choose the avatar that best resembled their real and ideal body. Resu

Nutritional status and weight are critical to cystic fibrosis (CF) care; however, this emphasis increases risk for body image concerns. Limited research has examined body image and esteem in people with CF (PWCF) after the approval of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), a highly effective gene modulator that can cause significant weight gain for those taking it. This study investigated associations among body image, body esteem, and weight status in 375 PWCF, ages 7-74 years (M = 26), taking ETI. Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing body image dissatisfaction and body

Although self-harm has been observed among patients with eating disorders, the effects of such tendencies on treatment outcomes are unclear. The current study employed structural equation modeling to (a) evaluate the relationship between self-harm and changes in body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness in a large sample of patients (n = 2061) who underwent inpatient treatment, and (b) to examine whether the relationship between self-harm and changes in body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness during inpatient treatment remains significant when controlling for change in negative affect du
