Adolescent Facial Acne Vulgaris and Body Mass Index: Any Relationship?

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease of adolescents. One risk factor for the development of acne is a high body mass indices. Children with high body mass index are said to be more likely to have increased Insulin-like growth factor-1, which has been implicated in acne pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to correlate body mass index with the presence and severity of facial acne vulgaris in adolescent school children. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in four co-educational secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria. One thousand and seventy nine students aged 9-20 years we

The relation between adolescents' body mass index and bone age.

Introduction: adolescents' health and nutritional status is demonstrated in the quality of their growth and development. Bone age (BA) is the skeletal development index, which reflects an individual's maturation and is considered as the best expression of human development. Poor nutritional conditions, which extend for long periods, may influence bone development, causing a delay in BA, in relation to chronological age (CA). The aim of this study is evaluating the relation between adolescents' body mass index and bone age. Methods: cross-sectional study carried out with 172 adolescents. The va

The Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Organism-Specific Peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly prevalent worldwide, and a greater number of patients initiate renal replacement therapy with a high body mass index (BMI). This study aimed to evaluate the association between BMI and organism-specific peritonitis. METHODS: All adult patients who initiated peritoneal dialysis (PD) in Australia between January 2004 and December 2013 were included. Data were accessed through the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) Registry. The co-primary outcomes of this study were time to first organism-specific peritonitis episode, specifically gra

Relationship between Child Maltreatment and Adolescent Body Mass Index Trajectories.

This study examines the relationship between childhood maltreatment experiences and body mass index (BMI) over time. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we use latent profile analysis to create child maltreatment experience classes and latent growth modeling to understand how classes relate to BMI trajectories from adolescence to early adulthood. The best-fitting model suggests four child maltreatment experience classes: 1) poly-maltreatment (n=607); 2) physical abuse (n=1,578); 3) physical abuse and neglect (n=345); and 4) no childhood maltreatment (

High body mass index is associated with impaired cognitive control.

The prevalence of weight problems is increasing worldwide. There is growing evidence that high body mass index (BMI) is associated with frontal lobe dysfunction and cognitive deficits concerning mental flexibility and inhibitory control efficiency. The present study aims at replicating and extending these observations. We compared cognitive control performance of normal weight (BMI < 25) and overweight (BMI ≥ 25) university students on a task tapping either inhibitory control (Experiment 1) or interference control (Experiment 2). Experiment 1 replicated previous findings that found less effici

Extremes of body mass index and postoperative complications after esophagectomy.

Obesity has been variously associated with reduced or similar rates of postoperative complications compared to normal weight patients undergoing esophagectomy for cancer. In contrast, little is known about esophagectomy risks in the underweight population. The relationship between the extremes of body mass index (BMI) and postoperative complications after esophagectomy was evaluated. Consecutive esophagectomy patients (2000-2013) were reviewed. The patients were stratified based on BMI at the time of diagnosis: underweight (<18.5), normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25-29.9), obese I (30-34.9), a

Maternal prepregnancy body mass index and risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

BackgroundWe examined the relationship between women's prepregnancy BMI and development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in their preterm offspring, hypothesizing that obesity-associated inflammation may increase risk.MethodsWe studied infants born in California between 2007 and 2011, using linked data from California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative neonatal intensive care units, hospital discharge, and vital statistics. We included infants with birthweight <1,500 g or gestational age at birth of 22-29 weeks. BPD was defined as continuous supplemental oxygen use at 36 weeks' postmenstr

Changes in Body Mass Index in Pheochromocytoma Patients Following Adrenalectomy.

Catecholamine excess from pheochromocytoma results in cardiovascular symptoms such as arterial hypertension and tachycardia and induces metabolic alterations including glucose intolerance and increase in resting metabolic rate. The objective of our study was to investigate the effect of surgical cure of pheochromocytoma on body-mass-index and the correlation of body-mass-index changes to preoperative endocrine parameters. Pheochromocytoma patients from the Munich ENSAT Registry were matched (1:2) for age and gender to patients from the German Conn's Registry, who had undergone surgery for aldo

Indications for primary cesarean delivery relative to body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a known risk factor for cesarean delivery. Limited data are available regarding the reasons for the increased rate of primary cesarean in obese women. It is important to identify the factors leading to an increased risk of cesarean to identify opportunities to reduce the primary cesarean rate. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated indications for primary cesarean across body mass index (kg/m(2)) classes to identify the factors contributing to the increased rate of cesarean among obese women. STUDY DESIGN: In the Consortium of Safe Labor study from 2002 through 2008, we calculated in

Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and newborn telomere length.

BACKGROUND: Newborn telomere length sets telomere length for later life. At birth, telomere length is highly variable among newborns and the environmental factors during in utero life for this observation remain largely unidentified. Obesity during pregnancy might reflect an adverse nutritional status affecting pregnancy and offspring outcomes, but the association of maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) with newborn telomere length, as a mechanism of maternal obesity, on the next generation has not been addressed. METHODS: Average relative telomere lengths were measured in cord blood

Childhood body mass index trajectories predicting cardiovascular risk in adolescence.

PURPOSE: The present study compared growth parameters of girls' and boys' body mass index (BMI) trajectories from infancy to middle childhood and evaluated these parameters as predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in adolescence. METHODS: Using 657 children from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, quadratic growth curve analyses were conducted to establish growth parameters (intercept, slope, and quadratic term) for girls and boys from age 15 months to 10.5 years. Parameters were compared across gender and evaluated as predictors of a CVD risk index at the age

Increased Body Mass Index Associated with Increased Risky Sexual Behaviors.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The increasing prevalence of adolescent obesity has led to consideration of the potential effect of obesity on risky sexual behaviors. In the current study we examined whether body mass index (BMI) was related to age at sexual debut, type of sexual behavior, partner number, and condom use in a population of adolescent women at high risk for obesity and risky sexual behaviors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional examination of 860 sexually active, predominantly minority, adolescent women who received medical care at an urban health center from 2007 through 2013.

Increasing Body Mass Index Is Inversely Related to Groin Hernias.

Few studies describe the relationship between obesity and groin hernias. Our objective was to investigate the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and groin hernias in a large population. Patients with the diagnosis of inguinal or femoral hernia with and without incarceration or strangulation were identified using the Kaiser Permanente Southern California regional database including 14 hospitals over a 7-year period. Patients were stratified by BMI. There were 47,950 patients with a diagnosis of a groin hernia--a prevalence of 2.28 per cent. Relative to normal BMI (20-24.9 kg/m(2)), lower

Body mass index in adult patients with diet-treated phenylketonuria.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing number of adults with phenylketonuria (PKU) on a low phenylalanine diet. In the general population, an increasing body mass index (BMI) in the UK is a major problem with associated co-morbidities. The present study aimed to identify whether patients with diet-treated PKU have obesity rates comparable to those in the general population. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-six PKU subjects (49% male, 51% female), aged >16 years, who were diagnosed by newborn screening and were receiving a low phenylalanine diet, were identified from seven metabolic centres in the
