Recovering bodies from water is a common task for any medical examiner or coroner office. Unfortunately, there will be a significant postmortem interval before many of these remains are found. A thorough scene investigation must be undertaken to determine if the location of the death and that of the body recovery are the same. Decomposition in a wet environment differs from that in other settings, both in the changes that occur and the rate at which they occur. It is essential that the forensic pathologist or medicolegal death investigator recognize and appreciate the uniqueness of immersed an

While normal human body temperature is often cited as 36.1-37.2 °C, there is high-quality evidence demonstrating that older adults typically have lower baseline body temperatures. In contrast to hypothermia (< 35 °C) which is well recognized as a medical emergency, there is emerging evidence that low body temperature (35.0-36.0 °C) may predict poor outcomes in the geriatric population. This narrative review synthesizes the current literature on the association between low body temperature in adults aged ≥ 65 years and common geriatric co-morbidities. Across observational and cohort studies, lo

Previous research suggests that body appreciation and social anxiety are likely intertwined, such that a more accepting and respectful orientation toward one's body may attenuate fears of negative evaluation in socially salient contexts. However, existing relationships reported have been cross-sectional in nature, meaning that the temporal order of this relationship remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine prospective, bidirectional associations between body appreciation and social anxiety in 1760 adult women (M = 34.02 years, SD = 9.34). Participants completed self-report measur

BACKGROUND: Time-restricted eating (TRE) has gained increasing attention as a dietary strategy for body mass management and metabolic health. However, its efficacy in athletic populations remains unclear. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effects of TRE on energy intake, body composition, and performance in athletes.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, the review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261291351). Six databases were searched from inception to January 10, 2026. Randomized controlled trials comparing TRE with non-TRE dietary patterns in adult

INTRODUCTION: Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) remains one of the main determinants of frailty and fracture risk in older adults. Lean mass is an important contributor to bone health through mechanical loading and muscle-bone interactions. Nevertheless, evidence from Latin America, particularly from DXA-based studies incorporating sex-stratified analyses, remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between body composition-emphasizing lean mass-and BMD in community-dwelling older adults from Chile.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 274 community-dwelling a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vertebral body repair comprises surgical procedures aimed at restoring height and stability of injured vertebrae, thereby re-establishing spinal structural integrity and load-bearing function. Bone fusion and biomaterial incorporation or integration are key determinants of long-term clinical outcomes, providing biological stability. The ideal biomaterial for vertebral body repair remains undefined. Despite the increasing number of available materials, achieving an optimal balance between mechanical load-bearing capacity and biological potential for progressive bone su

Psychedelics and meditation can facilitate transformative experiences with acute changes in sensory processing and self-perception, but research about their relation to narrative and affective-attitudinal body image remains limited. We examined body image themes in psychedelic and meditative experience narratives, compared these between experience types, and examined their associations with body attitudes. We qualitatively analyzed retrospective reports of participants' most personally meaningful psychedelic and meditation experiences (psychedelics: N = 90; meditation: N = 48). Using regressio

Body packing, pushing, and stuffing are hazardous practices with complex medicolegal and social implications. A radiologist plays both a social and a medicolegal role in their assessment, and it should not be limited only to the identification of the packages but must also provide accurate information about their number and their exact location so as to prevent any package remains in the body packer. Radiologists must also be able to recognize the complications associated with these risky practices. Imaging assessment of body packing is performed essentially through plain abdominal X-ray and c

1. The uptake of 14C-ascorbic acid by the iris-ciliary body in vitro was examined in the rabbit, guinea pig and rat. 2. It was observed that iris-ciliary body from the rabbit and guinea pig, but not the rat, accumulated 14C-ascorbate to levels exceeding that in the bathing medium. 3. In all three species, the uptake of 14C-ascorbate was diminished by cold temperature; the degree of uptake at 0 degrees C was similar in the rabbit, guinea pig and rat iris-ciliary body. 4. Chromatographic examination of the 14C accumulated by the rabbit and guinea pig tissue demonstrated that the label remains al

The authors report on four cases of aseptic osteonecrosis of the vertebral body in adults (VON). Among these, one patient, in whom histological data were available, presented with a slow spinal cord compression syndrome (SSCCS). This complication is uncommon since only one other similar case has been reported so far (4). VON thus remains an underestimated etiology of SSCCS by non-tumoral compression fracture of the vertebral body. Diagnosis is based on the roentgenograms which evidence osteocondensation with "gaseous dissection" of the vertebral body, the latter being considered as pathognomon

BACKGROUND: The use of human bodies for anatomy education and research forms an integral part of the training of health professionals around the world. However, the ethical acquisition of human remains for this purpose has been a challenge in many countries, particularly for those on the African continent. South African institutions have however, been able to progressively transition to a more ethical approach to human body acquisition. The aim of the current study was to investigate the provenance of human bodies and the number used in South African health sciences institutions during the per

Distinguishing our body from the external world is crucial for self-perception and environmental interaction. Yet, the accuracy with which we perceive this boundary remains underexplored. Here, we developed a psychophysical protocol to assess how accurately individuals perceive their body boundaries. Participants were asked whether the midpoint between two tactile stimuli was inside or outside their perceived body boundary. Three-dimensional scans provided objective anatomical boundaries, allowing psychometric functions to be fitted. Results revealed remarkable overall precision, often within

We have an abundance of perceptual information from multiple modalities specifying our body proportions. Consequently, it seems reasonable for researchers to assume that we have an accurate perception of our body proportions. In contrast to this intuition, recent research has shown large, striking distortions in people's perceptions of the relative proportions of their own bodies. Specifically, individuals show large distortions when estimating the length of their body parts with a corporal metric, such as the hand, but not with a non-corporal object of the same length (Linkenauger et al., 201

BACKGROUND: Carotid body tumor is a hypervascular tumor with multiple feeding arteries and unique orientation at the carotid bifurcation. Although resection is a radical therapy for this tumor, complete resection is challenging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles reporting carotid body tumor treatment and surgical resection were reviewed including case-control series and review articles.
RESULTS: Selected reports were reviewed and discussed focusing on choice of treatment, surgical difficulties and preoperative embolization of feeding arteries.
CONCLUSION: Multiple feeding arteries and adhesio

The pituitary gland (PG) influences body weight through hormonal releases; however, the relation between body weight and PG's co-activities with other brain regions remains unclear. Here, we aimed to identify (1) the functional connectivity of the PG and (2) PG functional connectivity associated with body mass index by examining resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging data. Using enhanced Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample, PG functional connectivity of 494 individuals was analyzed to assess in voxel-wise fashion. A negative association was found between BMI and PG functional c

BACKGROUND: Following spinal cord injury (SCI) or anaesthesia, people may continue to experience feelings of the size, shape and posture of their body, suggesting that the conscious body image is not fully determined by immediate sensory signals. How this body image is affected by changes in sensory inputs from, and motor outputs to, the body remains unclear.
METHODS: We tested paraplegic and tetraplegic SCI patients on a task that yields quantitative measures of body image. Participants were presented with an anchoring stimulus on a computer screen and told to imagine that the displayed body

The Broca formula was developed in 1871 by Pierre Paul Broca (a French Army Doctor) to help establish ideal body weight or normal body weight. Initially, the Broca Index (BI) was used to work out the normal weight but was later expanded to ideal Body Weight. Ideal Body weight (kg) = [Height (cm)-100]. The common methods used to explore the levels of adiposity include body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, skinfolds, bioelectrical impedance analysis, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Even though there have been sever

Electrophysiological and functional neuroimaging evidence points to the existence of neural populations that respond strongly and selectively to the appearance of the human body and its parts. However, the relationship between ERP and fMRI markers of these populations remains unclear. Here we used a previously identified functional dissociation between two body-selective regions identified with fMRI (extrastriate body area or EBA; fusiform body area or FBA) in order to better understand the source of a body-selective N1 ERP component. Specifically, we compared the magnitude of the N1 elicited

OBJECTIVE: Exercise timing may influence metabolic responses and body composition, but the extent to which circadian genetic variation contributes remains unclear. The PER3 rs228697 polymorphism has been linked to chronotype-related traits, although its relevance to exercise timing remains uncertain. This exploratory study examined whether body-composition responses to morning versus afternoon moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) differed according to PER3 rs228697 genotype in overweight/obese university students.
METHODS: In this 8-week supervised intervention, 31 overweight/obese u
