OBJECTIVE: The high metabolic risk and inherent brain structural changes in patients with schizophrenia are associated with cognitive impairment; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated whether cortical surface area (CSA) and cortical thickness (CT) mediate obesity-related cognitive impairment in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FEPS).
METHODS: We included 160 patients with FEPS and 150 healthy controls (HCs). Cognitive function and psychiatric symptoms were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Chinese version of t

It is not always easy to observe and screen atrial septal defects (ASD) using echocardiography. In addition, there are no established echocardiographic reference indices for screening patients with ASDs. We retrospectively reviewed our database and recruited 151 isolated ASD patients and 2769 healthy subjects. In total, 307 echocardiographic studies were performed for ASD patients. Surgical repairs were done in 75 of the ASD patients. The ratio of right to left ventricular end-diastolic dimensions (RVD/LVD), which was determined by M-mode echocardiography, was used as an index of RV dilatation

BACKGROUND: Infusion-related reactions (IRRs) are major side effects of rituximab administration. Male sex, high body weight, body surface area (BSA), and body mass index are predictive markers of rituximab-induced IRRs. However, as rituximab was not administered at a fixed dosage in a previous study, whether a higher dosage or factors associated with a larger physique are more strongly associated with rituximab-induced IRRs is unknown.
MAIN BODY: Thirteen adults with frequently relapsing minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) who received an initial rituximab dose of 500 mg between Septemb

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of carbachol (CAR) on pulmonary vascular permeability and pulmonary water content during oral fluid resuscitation of burn shock.
METHODS: Twelve male Beagle dogs with intubation of carotid artery and jugular vein for 24 hours were subjected to a 50% total body surface area (TBSA) full-thickness burn, then they were equally divided into oral resuscitation (OR) and OR plus CAR groups (OR+CAR). Dogs were given either a glucose-electrolyte solution (GES) in OR group or GES containing CAR (20 microg/kg) in OR+CAR group by gavage within 24 hours after burn. Dog

INTRODUCTION: Progress in intensive care and surgery has made it possible to significantly improve the survival of victims with burns over 60% of total body surface area (TBSA). Coverage of the excised areas of these patients can be difficult when there is a shortage of skin donor sites; then the role of skin substitutes can be important.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with burns covering more than 60% TBSA and treated at the Tours University Hospital over a period of 10 years. Patients who died during the first week or who presented superficial burns were e

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder affecting about 1 to 2% of the world population. The prevalence in Nepal is 2-3%. This disease is associated with profound psychological distress. Though many treatment options are available none of these are universally effective. The main objective of the study is to compare the efficacy and rate of repigmentation with use of topical steroid and topical placental extract versus topical steroid and topical tacrolimus 0.1% in treating patients with localized vitiligo. One hundred patients visiting the dermatology outpatient department of Nepal Medical College

BACKGROUND & AIM: The deleterious consequences of chronically elevated venous pressure in patients with profound right ventricular or biventricular dysfunction are well known, including renal and hepatic dysfunction, and volume overload. The only option for these patients, if they fail optimal medical treatment, is a heart transplant, as they are not candidates for left ventricular assist device therapy. Mean perfusion pressure (MPP) is important in the outcomes of critically ill patients with high venous pressure. The question arises whether MPP is important for the outcomes of heart transpla

INTRODUCTION: Currently information regarding burn size from referring departments to burn centres varies in accuracy. Inaccurate assessment of burn size can lead to over or under treatment. Photographs of injuries may improve accuracy of assessment. We aimed to assess the accuracy of measuring burn size on a static image by including a standard object in the image.
METHODS: Simulated burn areas were drawn on different body parts of the model. Using an iPhone® model 5 s with an 8 megapixel camera we took photos of the marked area, and repeated them with the palm, a standard bank card and a pe

PURPOSE: Obesity causes changes in the total body surface area as well as the distribution of skin surfaces. In burn management, three methods are commonly used to determine the surface area burned: the patient's palm, the rule of nines, and the Lund-Browder chart. These methods rely on the distribution of skin surface, although none of these methods consider differences in body mass. This study investigates the relationship between body surfaces and body mass in the assessment of burn size to determine the validity of the conventional methods when applied to obese individuals.
METHODS: The c

The pathogenesis of tissue damage in filarial infections involves the generation of inflammatory mediators by interaction of parasite surfaces with the host immune response. In the presence of a heavy parasite burden, the tremendous potential for development of adverse local or systemic inflammatory responses may be appreciated by knowledge of the cumulative surface area represented by circulating microfilariae. The approximate surface area of a single microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus was calculated using mathematical formulae for standard geometrical shapes and values derived from serial

In the Netherlands, an average of 92,000 patients with burn injuries are seen annually by a general practitioners. A burn injury is defined as skin damage caused by heat, radiation, electricity, and/or chemical agents. It is crucial to make an accurate assessment of the severity of the burn. The severity is primarily determined by the size (also referred to as the total burned body surface area, or TBSA), the depth of the burn, as well as the location, any associated injuries (such as inhalation trauma) and patient factors such as age and comorbidities. What initial measures do you take, what

Cold burns are an uncommon mechanism of burn injury in Australia, where environmental exposure to freezing temperatures is rare. Aetiological research shows that most likely causes are related to intentional injury or industrial accidents1 Cryolipolysis, a cosmetic technique advertised as 'fat freezing', has recently emerged as a method of fat reduction and body contouring. Whilst perceived as safe4,5, this study presents the world's first case series on cold burns sustained from cryolipolysis. A retrospective review was undertaken of the New South Wales Statewide Burn Injury Service (SBIS) Re

On the base of his own studies, the author established that the effective quantity of electric energy for cardioversion is from 150 to 350 W/s. A greater quantity of energy (285.6 +/- 53.8 W/s) is necessary in patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy than in patients with heart defects, ischemic heart disease and idiopathic rhythm disorder (273.72 +/- 49.1 W/s). In patients with mitral stenosis and prostheses, the quantity used is greater as compared with that in valvulotomized patients and those with mitral-aortic defect. In ventricular tachycardia the mean quantity of electric energy used for

OBJECTIVES: Most cytostatics used in cancer treatment are dosed on body surface area (BSA). To administer an appropriate dose it is therefore necessary to know the patient's correct body weight. However, evidence is lacking on how often, after initiation of treatment, body weight should be measured to recalculate BSA. We aimed to assess the relevance of weight measurements during chemotherapy treatment.
METHODS: Over a 2 year period we analysed BSA changes in adult patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The frequency of and median time to ≥10% BSA change was determined. We assumed a 10%

BACKGROUND: Topotecan, an antitumor drug with systemic exposure (SE)-dependent activity against many pediatric tumors has wide interpatient pharmacokinetic variability, making it challenging to attain the desired topotecan SE. The study objectives were to update our topotecan population pharmacokinetic model, to evaluate the feasibility of determining individual topotecan clearance using a single blood sample, and to apply this approach to topotecan data from a neuroblastoma trial to explore exposure-response relationships.
PROCEDURE: Our previous population pharmacokinetic and covariate mode

BACKGROUND: Visual evaluation is the most common method of evaluating burn wounds. Its subjective nature can lead to inaccurate diagnoses and inappropriate burn center referrals. Machine learning may provide an objective solution. The objective of this study is to summarize the literature on ML in burn wound evaluation.
METHODS: A systematic review of articles published between January 2000 and January 2021 was performed using PubMed and MEDLINE (OVID). Articles reporting on ML or automation to evaluate burn wounds were included. Keywords included burns, machine/deep learning, artificial inte

BACKGROUND: Different methods have resulted in variable Z scores for echocardiographic measurements. Using the measurements from 3,215 healthy North American children in the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN) echocardiographic Z score database, the authors compared the PHN model with previously published Z score models.
METHODS: Z scores were derived for cardiovascular measurements using four models (PHN, Boston, Italy, and Detroit). Model comparisons were performed by evaluating (1) overlaid graphs of measurement versus body surface area with curves at Z = -2, 0, and +2; (2) scatterplots of PHN v
