The relationship between normal body temperature, end-expired breath temperature, and blood alcohol concentration (BAC)/breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) ratio was studied in 98 subjects (84 men, 14 women). Subjects consumed alcohol sufficient to produce a BrAC of at least 0.06 g/210 L 45-75 min after drinking. Breath samples were analyzed using an Intoxilyzer 8000 specially equipped to measure breath temperature. Venous blood samples and body temperatures were then taken. The mean body temperature of the men (36.6 degrees C) was lower than the women (37.0 degrees C); however, their mean bre

Evidence suggests that affective disorders are associated with altered thermoregulation, and it has been hypothesized that therapeutic strategies targeting body-to-brain thermosensory systems may be effective for treating depression. Consistent with this hypothesis, a recent randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial has suggested that infrared whole-body hyperthermia has therapeutic potential for the treatment of depression. Preclinical models may help uncover the mechanism(s) underlying the antidepressant-like effects of whole-body heating. We have previously shown that expo

Thermal microchips are increasingly used in animals as an alternative to rectal temperature measurements because handling is not required. These pilot studies aimed to determine the usefulness of orally administered thermal microchips in infectious disease studies of artiodactyla species when a temperature increase was expected. Thermal microchips were administered subcutaneously to two groups of seven alpacas infected with influenza C and D virus respectively and three alpacas serving as non-challenged controls and orally to one alpaca in each group. Three sheep exposed to border disease viru

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that causes both acute and chronic infections in vulnerable populations. Treatment of P. aeruginosa infections is increasingly challenging due to multi-drug resistance, and biofilm formation during infection further increases antibiotic tolerance. Iron, which is sequestered by the host innate immune system, is also a key nutrient that is required for P. aeruginosa biofilm formation. The iron-responsive PrrF small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) are key to P. aeruginosa's iron starvation response, promote the production of the Pseudomonas

BACKGROUND: Peri-anaesthetic hypothermia is a well-documented complication of general anaesthesia and is associated with prolonged recovery, impaired wound healing, and delayed coagulation. Fluid warmers can be used to mitigate heat loss, but there is little evidence supporting their effectiveness in equine anaesthesia.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether administration of warmed intravenous fluids attenuates heat loss during general anaesthesia in horses.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomised, crossover in vivo experiment.
METHODS: Six healthy adult horses were anaesthetised twice and adminis

Whole genome analysis has identified rare copy number variations (CNV) that are strongly involved in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders, and 3q29 deletion has been found to have the largest effect size. The 3q29 deletion mice model (3q29-del mice) has been established as a good pathological model for schizophrenia based on phenotypic analysis; however, circadian rhythm and sleep, which are also closely related to neuropsychiatric disorders, have not been investigated. In this study, our aims were to reevaluate the pathogenesis of 3q29-del by recreating model mice and analyzing their beh

Nonshivering thermogenesis in rodents requires macronutrients to fuel the generation of heat during hypothermic conditions. In this study, we examined the role of the nutrient sensing kinase, general control nonderepressible 2 (GCN2) in directing adaptive thermogenesis during acute cold exposure in mice. We hypothesized that GCN2 is required for adaptation to acute cold stress via activation of the integrated stress response (ISR) resulting in liver production of FGF21 and increased amino acid transport to support nonshivering thermogenesis. In alignment with our hypothesis, female and male mi

Understanding the physiological processes that underpin primate performance is key if we are to assess how a primate might respond when navigating new and changing environments. Given the connection between a mammal's ability to thermoregulate and the changing demands of its thermal environment, increasing attention is being devoted to the study of thermoregulatory processes as a means to assess primate performance. Infrared thermography can be used to record the body surface temperatures of free-ranging animals. However, some uncertainty remains as to how these measurements can be used to app

General anesthesia induces many systemic effects, including thermoregulatory impairment and subsequent perioperative hypothermia. Due to the animals' small size, monitoring and maintaining body temperatures in laboratory rodents during anesthesia is important for successful surgical outcomes and prompt anesthetic recovery. Draping materials have the potential to aid in thermal support during surgical anesthesia. In this study, rectal and surface (infrared) temperatures were measured in C57BL/6 mice under isoflurane anesthesia every 5 min for the duration of a 35-min sham surgery. In addition t

Cold-stress syndrome (CSS) is one of the leading natural threats to free-ranging Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris). Cold water exposure below the species' acceptable physiologic range is a frequent occurrence for manatees during cold weather months causing CSS-induced systemic illness and significant annual mortality. Although CSS is a commonly presented condition at manatee rehabilitation facilities, the core body temperatures in CSS manatees are currently unknown due to the lack of clinically applicable and accurate temperature measurement methodologies. Our objective was to

To specify whether an association exists between pre-hospital body temperature collected by the emergency medical services (EMS) call centre, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission of patients with septic shock. An observational study based on data collected by the EMS of Paris. All septic shocks were included. Among, the 140 calls concerning septic shock, 22 patients (16%) were admitted to ICU. The mean core temperature was 37.4±1.6°C for ICU and 38.6±1.1°C (p<4.10^-5) for non-ICU patients. Using propensity score analysis, the relative risk for ICU admission of patients with pre-hospital fev

The mechanical performance of materials at oil/water interfaces after consumption is a key factor affecting hydrophobic drug release. In this study, we methylated the surface of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) by mercerization and dimethyl sulfate exposure to produce thermosensitive biopolymers. These methylated NCC (metNCC) were used to investigate interfacial thermogelation at air/water and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)/water interfaces at body temperature. In contrast to bulk fluid dynamics, elastic layers were formed at room temperature, and elasticity increased significantly at body tem

The body temperature and locomotor activity rhythms of seven 1-Methyl, 4-phenyl, 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated cynomolgous monkeys were registered over a week on two separate occasions over an interval of 2 months. Motor disability was absent in two animals and present in five: it was mild in one, moderate in two and severe in two. Both temperature and motor activity were recorded every minute using a radio telemetry system. Analysis of circadian rhythms revealed less robustness of the 24-hour circadian components of body temperature and locomotor activity with increasing motor imp

We examined, in a controlled design, potential alterations in body temperature of male schizophrenic patients following acute antipsychotic drug (APD) administration. Fourteen drug-free (study group) and seven schizophrenic patients maintained on APDs (comparison group) initiated or received higher dose of their APD, respectively, for 27 days. Initial body temperature was 0.36 degrees C higher in the study group (P=0.01) and decreased within 24 h to values comparable to that of the comparison group (all within normal range).

Genetic variation for more than 40 traits was assessed in 26 stocks of mature chickens reared together and fed ad libitum from hatching to slaughter at 507 days of age. There was greater genetic variation among males than among females. The intraclass correlation, t, was high (greater than .75) for measures of size and weight and moderate (.20 to .60) for most other traits (P less than .05) including a measure of lean distribution (.37). Three main categories of stocks were studied, viz. outbred Leghorns, medium-sized stocks, and contemporary heavy meat chickens. Differences in lean distributi

In 1975 H. Rahn put forward a new concept of hydrogen ions regulation which explains acid-base regulation in relation to body temperature and applies to all animal species. At the root of this concept is the finding that maintenance of intracellular neutrality is governed by water dissociation and regulated by imidazole-rich protein buffers. The pH of the extracellular fluid, which receives acid by-products of cell activity, is kept higher than that of the intracellular fluid (relative alkalinity). The difference between extracellular pH and neutrality is constant for each species and ranges f
