A case report of acute hypothermia during initial inpatient clozapine titration with review of current literature on clozapine-induced temperature dysregulations.

BACKGROUND: Here we describe a unique case of clozapine-associated hypothermia during initial titration of this medication in an acute inpatient psychiatry setting. Only a handful of cases on this topic have been published. We discuss possible pharmacologic mechanisms supporting or refuting the propensity of clozapine to induce hypothermia, as well as risk factors for clozapine-induced hypothermia, and a comparison to clozapine-induced hyperthermia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70 year-old African American female with treatment-refractory schizoaffective disorder developed hypothermia with a nadir te

Daytime melatonin and light independently affect human alertness and body temperature.

Light significantly improves alertness during the night (Cajochen, Sleep Med Rev, 11, 2007 and 453; Ruger et al., AJP Regul Integr Comp Physiol, 290, 2005 and R1413), but results are less conclusive at daytime (Lok et al., J Biol Rhythms, 33, 2018 and 589). Melatonin and core body temperature levels at those times of day may contribute to differences in alerting effects of light. In this experiment, the combined effect of daytime exogenous melatonin administration and light intensity on alertness, body temperature, and skin temperature was studied. The goal was to assess whether (a) alerting e

Yawning reduces facial temperature in the high-yawning subline of Sprague-Dawley rats.

BACKGROUND: Yawning is a stereotyped behavior that enhances blood flow to the skull, and the resulting counterflow has been hypothesized as a mechanism for brain cooling. Studies have shown that yawns are strongly associated with physiological and pathological conditions that increase brain temperature, and that they are followed by equivalent decreases in brain temperature. However, measured reductions in cranial or facial temperatures following yawning have yet to be reported, to our knowledge. To accomplish this, we used a subline of Sprague-Dawley rats that yawn at a much greater rate (20

Behavioural postures and the rate of body temperature change in wild freshwater crocodiles, Crocodylus johnstoni.

I recorded body temperature and behaviour of eight Crocodylus johnstoni in the wild over a 2-yr period in order to quantify the effect of posturing on body temperature and to provide a mechanistic explanation of how behaviour affects body temperature. Behaviour was categorised according to the proportion of a crocodile's surface area exposed from the water (0% exposed [=diving] to 100% exposed [=basking]). Crocodiles did not simply shuttle between the extremes of 100% exposed and diving but showed an array of intermediate postures. Rates of body temperature change were negative for exposures l

Wet-cold exposure and hypothermia: thermal and metabolic responses to prolonged exercise in rain.

Simulated conditions of hiking in rain, wind, and cold, without protective rainwear, were used to investigate wet-cold hypothermia in 18 male subjects. Thermal, metabolic, and motor responses were monitored during an attempted 5-h walk (5.1 km/h) at 5 degrees C, with continuous exposure to rain (7.4 cm/h) and wind (8.0 km/h) over the final 4 h. The majority of subjects (11) could not complete the protocol because of intolerance of wet-cold conditions during the last 2 h. Therefore, data from 5 subjects who completed the protocol in rain and control conditions were used to describe the general

Testis temperature, infertility, and the varicocele paradox.

The author presents arguments which favor elevated temperature of the testis and adnexae as an important factor in patients with poor semen seen in varicocele and "idiopathic" infertility. This appears to be primarily the result of disturbed thermoregulation due to internal spermatic vein retrograde blood flow. Elevated testis temperature without varicocele may be present in as high as 54% of all patients with "idiopathic" infertility. The prevailing theory in the United States is that the varicocele's bilateral effect is due to a substance noxious to spermatogeneis which is carried to both te

Continuous body temperature as a window into adolescent development.

Continuous body temperature is a rich source of information on hormonal status, biological rhythms, and metabolism, all of which undergo stereotyped change across adolescence. Due to the direct actions of these dynamic systems on body temperature regulation, continuous temperature may be uniquely suited to monitoring adolescent development and the impacts of exogenous reproductive hormones or peptides (e.g., hormonal contraception, puberty blockers, gender affirming hormone treatment). This mini-review outlines how traditional methods for monitoring the timing and tempo of puberty may be augme

Rectal temperature and heat transfer dynamics in the eye, face, and breast of broiler chickens exposed to moderate heat stress.

This study aimed to characterize body temperature in finishing broiler chickens and to explore heat transfer dynamics under thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS) conditions. To achieve this, 900 Ross 308 chicks were divided into TN and HS groups, with the HS group subjected to cyclical heat stress (30°C, 45 % RH) from day 28 to day 33 post-hatch. Rectal temperature (Tr) and skin temperature (Ts) at the face (Tsf), eye (Tse), and breast (Tsb) were measured. Tr ranged from 39.1 to 40.6°C under TN and from 40.4 to 43.2°C under HS (Pcondition < 0.001). Core-to-skin temperature gradients were low

Cumulative pre-cooling methods do not enhance cycling performance in tropical climate.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of mixed cooling techniques (combination of internal and external strategies, with and without menthol) during warm-up for a time trial in tropical climate. Seven heat-acclimatized trained male road cyclists participated in three experimental sessions consisting of 20-min cycling performances on a velodrome track in ecological hot and humid conditions (Guadeloupe, French West Indies; WBGT: 27.64±0.27°C; relative humidity: 76.43±2.19%), preceded by a standardized 30-min warm-up and the ingestion of cold menthol water (1) with a cool

Delineating the impacts of air temperature and humidity for endurance exercise.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What are the independent effects of air temperature and humidity on performance, physiological and perceptual responses during endurance exercise? What is the main finding and its importance? When examined independently, elevated air temperature increased heat strain and impaired aerobic exercise performance, but to a lesser extent than has been reported previously. These findings highlight the importance of absolute humidity relative to temperature when exercising or working under severe heat stress. ABSTRACT: Many studies have report

Scrotal heating stimulates panting and reduces body temperature similarly in febrile and non-febrile rams (Ovis aries).

It is known that heating the ram scrotum stimulates heat loss resulting in a decrease in body temperature and that during fever core temperature increases, but local scrotal thermoeffectors operate to maintain normal scrotal temperature. We have investigated whether scrotal warming influences core body temperature and the panting effector during fever generation. We measured rectal temperature, intrascrotal temperature, scrotal skin temperature and respiratory frequency in four adult Merino rams following intravascular injection of saline or lipopolysaccharide at an ambient temperature of 18-2

Exogenous heating induces a more pronounced rise in prolactin concentration than exertional heating in young men, despite a closely matched body core temperature increase.

This study aimed to compare blood prolactin concentrations and thermal perceptions between exertional heating (Exer-H) and exogenous heating (Exo-H) eliciting a closely matched elevation of rectal temperature (Trec) but different changes in skin temperature (Tsk) in young active males. Fourteen participants were randomly exposed to Exer-H (ergocycle at 60 % VO2max at 30 °C) and Exo-H (hot-water immersion up to the waist, 43-44 °C). The heating phase ended when Trec (Peak) reached 39 °C, or was <39 °C but reached the volunteers' limit point of tolerance. The post-heating phase (passive sitting)

Thermoregulatory response of black or red lactating Holstein cows in the hot and cold season in southern Brazil.

Dairy cows in pasture-based systems are more susceptible to heat stress. Holstein cows have the black or red phenotypes, the latter having lower absorbance of solar radiation. Therefore, the study's objective was to evaluate whether cows with red (R) coats are more resistant than black (B) cows to hot weather in a subtropical climate. R and B lactating Holstein cows were evaluated during the cold and hot seasons for internal and surface temperature and sweating rate. In the cold season, body temperature (n = 9/group) did not differ between groups, but the average superficial temperature (n = 1

Thermoregulatory responses to heat and vibration in men.

To determine if exposure to vibration influences thermoregulation, six healthy Caucasian men, 22-33 years old, were heat-acclimated and then simultaneously exposed to heat and whole-body vibration (WBV). The WBV exposures were divided into two intensity levels, and included tests at frequencies of 5, 10, 16, 30, and 80 Hz. Rectal temperature, local sweat rate, heart rate, and local blood flow were measured. There were no statistically significant differences (p less than 0.05) in rectal temperatures or heart rate as a function of frequency. The mean rectal temperatures for the WBV intensity-le

The effect of pre-cooling or per-cooling in athletes with a spinal cord injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: For individuals with a spinal cord injury, thermoregulatory challenges presented by the environment are amplified, increasing the risk of exertional heat illness. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aims to quantify the effects of pre- and per-cooling on core temperature (Tc), skin temperature (Tsk) and thermal sensation in participants with spinal cord injury and assess the influence of lesion level on the effects of cooling. DESIGN: Systematic review with meta-analysis. METHODS: Out of 2107 potential studies, 17 were identified via the inclusion criteria for a total

A mathematical model to study thermoregulation and heat-transfer processes in hypothermic neonates under variable physiological parameters.

All neonates, whether term or preterm, are prone to hypothermia, which is a major health issue causing many health problems to infants and sometimes even death. Thus, such subjects are imperative to study to help researchers and biologists in neonatology, for developing certain methods, procedures and devices to prevent these abnormal temperature fluctuations to save the neonates from this health threat. To this purpose, a multi-node mathematical model is developed, to provide detailed insights and its applications to study the temperature profiles, thermoregulatory and heat-transfer mechanism
