Isotopic and geochemical characterization of invader tilapia fishes from water bodies of West Bengal and Karnataka, India.

The otoliths (N = 12) of freshwater invasive species tilapia (Tilapia mossambicus) collected from two water bodies located at Kolkata and Bangalore, India, were analyzed for stable isotopes (δ18O, δ14C) and major and trace elements in order to assess the suitability of using otoliths as a tracer of aquatic environmental changes. The stable isotope analysis was done using the dual inlet system of a Finnigan-MAT 253 isotope ratio mass spectrometer (Thermo-Fisher, Bremen, Germany). Concentrations of major and trace elements were determined using a Thermo X-Series II quadrupole mass spectrometer.

Molecular characterization of mercury resistant bacteria inhabiting polluted water bodies of different geographical locations in India.

Mercury pollution is a major environmental problem that arises as a result of natural processes as well as from anthropogenic sources. In response to toxic mercury compounds, microbes have developed astonishing array of resistance systems to detoxify them. To address this challenge, this study was aimed in screening bacterial isolates for their tolerance against varied concentrations of phenylmercuric acetate. Mercury transformation by bacteria being sensitive to factors such as available carbon source, etc. that affect mer-mediated transformation, screened mercury tolerant bacteria were also

Modifications of blood volume alter the disposition of markers of blood volume, extracellular fluid, and total body water.

Recirculatory pharmacokinetic models for indocyanine green (ICG), inulin, and antipyrine describe intravascular mixing and tissue distribution after i.v. administration. These models characterized physiologic marker disposition in four awake, splenectomized dogs while they were normovolemic, volume loaded (15% of estimated blood volume added as a starch solution), and mildly and moderately hypovolemic (15 and 30% of estimated blood volume removed). ICG-determined blood volumes increased 20% during volume loading and decreased 9 and 22% during mild and moderate hypovolemia. Dye (ICG) dilution c

Diurnal pattern of water and electrolyte excretion and body weight in idiopathic orthostatic hypotension. The effect of three treatments.

The diurnal pattern of water and solute excretion and body weight were examined in five control subjects and in a patient with idiopathic orthostatic hypotension before and during treatment. The patient had a reversed diurnal pattern of excretion of sodium, urea and water but not of potassium and creatinine, and there was an excessive diurnal variation in body weight. The effects of three treatments, high salt diet alone and then with the addition of head-up tilt, and later fludrocortisone, were studied. Fludrocortisone caused marked clinical improvement and retention of sodium and water. Once

Pesticide-driven antimicrobial resistance in water bodies: insights on environmental concerns, health implications and mitigation strategies.

Pesticide contamination in water bodies is an emerging driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing severe environmental and public health risks. Due to excessive agricultural use, pesticides routinely end up in water bodies due to leaching, improper disposal, and agricultural runoff. Pesticides act as selective pressures, promoting resistant microbial strains by providing evolutionary pressure for the strains to thrive. Pesticides facilitate the dissemination of resistance genes through several mechanisms; horizontal gene transfer, bio-film formation, and co-selection with heavy metals. P

Mechanism and application of sulfhydryl-modified chitosan derivative for decontamination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in water bodies.

The accumulation of lead and cadmium in water bodies is a serious threat to environmental safety and human health, and they must be removed from wastewater. Based on this this study, a novel sulfhydryl-modified chitosan derivative (SHCS) was prepared by grafting method using chitosan as a substrate for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from polluted water bodies. The results showed that the SHCS derivative was a mesoporous biosorbent with a specific surface area of 0.0505 cm3/g. The adsorption kinetics of the adsorbent on the pollutants conformed to the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-orde

The occurrence of opioid compounds in wastewater treatment plants and their receiving water bodies in Gauteng province, South Africa.

The continuous influx of opioid compounds into aquatic environments has become an increasing and persistent concern, due to their extensive use. This is especially alarming as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are unable to completely remove them. Despite the reported health concerns, the occurrence of opioid compounds in the environment has not received much attention. The present study investigates the occurrence of 19 opioids in four WWTPs and their respective receiving water bodies. All wastewater samples revealed opioids at concentration ranging from ng/L to μg/L with most influents hav

Contribution of soluble and particulate-matter fractions to the total glyphosate and AMPA load in water bodies associated with horticulture.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are used in horticulture to prepare the soil for planting and to remove weeds surrounding greenhouses. Superficial runoff from production units can lead to glyphosate reaching nearby water bodies. Previous publications reported glyphosate's high affinity for suspended solids. The aim of the present work was to investigate the occurrence and concentrations of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in soluble and suspended-particulate-matter fractions within the basin of the Carnaval-Stream, a water body traversing a horticultural greenbelt. Glyphosate and A

The role of freshwater copepods in the environmental risk assessment of caffeine and propranolol mixtures in the surface water bodies of Spain.

In this study we aimed at assessing: (i) the environmental risk posed by mixtures of caffeine and propranolol to the freshwater ecosystems of Spain; (ii) the sensitivity of freshwater copepod species to the two compounds; (iii) if the toxicity of caffeine and propranolol to freshwater copepods contributes to the environmental risk posed by the two compounds in the freshwater bodies of Spain. The environmental risk was computed as the ratio of MECs (i.e. the measured environmental concentrations) to PNECs (i.e. the respective predicted no-effect concentrations). The effects of caffeine and prop

Incidence of visceral leishmaniasis in the Vaishali district of Bihar, India: spatial patterns and role of inland water bodies.

The role of the distribution of inland water bodies with respect to the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and its dominant vector, Phlebotomous argentipes, has been studied at the regional scale in Bihar, eastern India. The Landsat TM sensor multispectral scanning radiometer, with a spatial resolution of 30 m in the visible, reflective-infrared and shortwave-infrared (SWIR) bands, was used to identify water bodies using the normalized differential pond index (NDPI) calculated as follows: (Green - SWIR I)/(Green + SWIR I). Nearest neighbour and grid square statistics were used to deli

Changes in body posture in children with first-degree scoliosis taking part in corrective exercises in a water environment.

Background. Swimming and aquatic exercises are a very attractive form of movement for children and young people, which is helpful in correcting posture defects. The water environment relieves pressure on the spine, relaxes muscles, and makes it easier to assume the proper posture. Swimming allows to join pleasure - water play and learning to swim - with therapeutic action. The primary purpose of our research was to evaluate the effectiveness of corrective swimming, based on our own program, and to determine the effect on swimming on spine arrangement in two position in children with posture de

Differential effects of acute total water deprivation on voluntary exercise behavior and body mass in laboratory house mice.

Various studies have demonstrated adverse effects of dehydration on human athletic and cognitive performance, but most are limited in scope. Moreover, few have studied such effects on voluntary exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of 24 h of water deprivation on voluntary wheel-running behavior (a model for human voluntary exercise) and body mass in laboratory house mice. To increase the probability of detecting the effects of water deprivation, we studied mice from four replicate High Runner (HR) lines that have been bred for high levels of wheel running. Both sexes

The Many-Body Expansion for Aqueous Systems Revisited: IV. Stabilization of Halide-Anion Pairs in Small Water Clusters.

We report the structures, energetics, many-body effects, and vibrational spectra of water clusters stabilizing pairs of halide-anions, X-(H2O)kY- (k = 2-6, X/Y = F, Cl, Br, I) as well as their stability in the gas phase relative to fragmentation. We find that these metastable cluster structures mimicking the solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) configurations in aqueous solutions are less stable relative to fragmentation into smaller ionic aqueous clusters containing a single halide anion. The many-body expansion (MBE) at these geometries was found to converge at the 4-body term, which is, howeve
