Two cases of induced healing of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) following intralesional implantation of a bone paste made of autogeneic bone marrow and allogeneic bone powder are reported. The calcaneum in one case and the superior pubic ramus in the other were blown out by an ABC and would have required extensive surgery. Via a minimal exposure, the cyst was partially evacuated and filled with an admixture of a partially demineralized bone particles with bone marrow. Ossification of the peripheral shell was the first sign of healing and was observed within the first 3 postoperative months. Success

PURPOSE: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are locally aggressive expansile bone tumors that typically present near the metaphysis and are commonly encountered in the pediatric population. This study presents the results of a single staged procedure, which is a modification of the Sclerograft procedure (chemical sclerotherapy combined with regenerative bone grafting) used to treat unicameral bone cysts (UBCs), as an alternative treatment paradigm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-institution study included patients with MRI-confirmed primary aneurysmal bone cysts of the appendicul

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and long-term results of Ethibloc treatment in aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC).
METHODS: Thirteen patients with ABC were treated with direct percutaneous Ethibloc injection. Four patients had only one injection and the other nine patients from two to four injections. No severe complications were observed; in two patients a local leakage of Ethibloc from the cyst into the soft tissues occurred but it was temporary and the consequent inflammation self-healed without residua and sequelae. Imaging follow-up lasted from 6 to 67 months and included conventional radiology

Experience collected by us from treating 15 patients suffering from giant cell tumours, aneurysmatic bone cysts or an osteoid osteoma prompted us to investigate which progress has been made to date in the diagnosis and treatment of these lesions that contain giant cells, basing on recent diagnostic methods such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance, as well as neurosurgical methods. It was found that the course of these rare changes cannot be influenced either by extensive diagnostic or special neurosurgical measures and that the prognosis finally depends on the growth trends inherent

Since the first description of an aneurysmal bone cyst in 1942, the pathogenesis of this tumor-like lesion has been controversial. Aspects of interest for elucidating the nature of this lesion include the cellular linings of the aneurysmal cavity systems as well as the character and cellular composition of the stromal septa. To clarify these features, seven aneurysmal bone cysts were studied electron microscopically and immunocytochemically with endothelial (Factor VIII-related antigen, monoclonal endothelial marker) and histiocytic (alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 1-antichymotrypsin, lysozyme, aci

In three patients an aneurysmal bone cyst occurring in a metacarpal was treated by excising the involved bone and substituting bone grafts. There was no evidence of recurrence in 1, 3, and 8 years of follow-up. In two patients with open epiphyses, growth of the metacarpal was not impaired.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare benign osteolytic tumors which occur most frequently within the first two decades of life and can lead to pathological fractures. They have characteristic imaging and histologic features and have historically been classified into two types: primary ABCs, which are true neoplasms linked to specific oncogenes, and secondary ABCs, which are preceded by other bone lesions. The occurrence of multiple concurrent primary ABCs is exceedingly rare; with only a few cases reported in the published literature. Here, we present an unusual case of this condition, along

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are among the most aggressive benign bone tumors, often occurring in both long bones and the spine. Treatment remains controversial as recurrence rates continue to be high. Treatment options include curettage with or without bone grafting, arterial embolization, en block resection with or without instrumentation or arthrodesis, radiation, and intralesional drug injections (steroids, calcitonin, doxycycline). We present the case of a patient with a thoracic vertebral ABC who underwent 2 rounds of doxycycline foam percutaneous injections. At the 1-year follow up appo

BACKGROUND: To decrease the recurrence rate after intralesional curettage for aneurysmal bone cysts, different adjuvant treatments have been recommended. Liquid nitrogen spray and argon beam coagulation have provided the lowest recurrence rates, but unlike the high-speed burr, these adjuvants are not always available in operating rooms.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked: (1) Is high-speed burring alone sufficient as an adjuvant to curettage with respect to recurrence rates? (2) What is the complication rate from this technique? (3) What are the risk factors for local recurrence?
METHODS: A retros

Chest wall hamartoma is a rare non-neoplastic benign lesion occurring in the neonatal period with particular clinical, radiological and pathological features. Histologically, it is composed of a mixture of bone trabeculae with spindle-cell stroma, chondroblast-like cells, and mature and immature hyaline cartilage. Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign lesion that may arise secondary to several bone processes, such as giant cell tumor, chondrosarcoma, non-ossifying fibroma or osteosarcoma. We present two new cases of chest wall hamartoma with secondary aneurysmatic bone cyst formation studied with h

We report a case of an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) originating in a rib. A 34-year-old woman was admitted to our medical department for evaluation of left rib pain and an abnormal shadow in the left 7th rib observed on chest radiography. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an osteolytic lesion involving the left 7th rib. Positron emission tomography/CT showed slight fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in the lesion. We performed 7th rib resection with a 4 cm margin from the tumor, including the intercostal muscles in the 6th and 7th interspaces. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen showed

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign, locally aggressive tumour that arises predominantly in long bones and spine. Following the encouraging results of denosumab use in Giant Cell Tumors (GCT) and the histological similarities between ABC and GCT, the interest on the role of denosumab in the therapeutic arsenal of the most advanced ABC is growing. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the current state of knowledge about the use of denosumab in ABCs.
METHODS: A literature research was conducted through PUBMED, COCHRANE and GOOGLE SCHOLAR using the keywords "ane

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rare, benign primary bone tumors. Although benign, they can be locally aggressive resulting in erosion of bone and surrounding tissues over time. In later stages, depending on the clinical urgency, immunotherapy or surgical resection remain treatment options. This report illustrates a case of a 32-year-old female who presented with chronic worsening low back pain without neurological deficits. Radiological imaging revealed a large destructive mass arising from the thoracic spine invading into the central canal, causing critical central stenosis and cord compress

An aneurysmal bone cyst is a very rare benign tumor of the ribs. It mainly involves the long bones and vertebrae, and requires histopathological examination for definitive diagnosis. We present a case of large aneurysmal bone cyst of the left 6th rib in young adult male. The diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst should be kept in mind in young patients presenting with an expansile lytic lesion of the rib, because it has an excellent outcome after complete surgical resection.

An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is believed to be attributable to intraosseous circulatory disturbance. An ABC is a vascular tumor of the bone caused by bony expansion after partial vascular occlusion and congestion. Most ABCs are found in adolescents (approximately 75% of ABCs are observed in patients under 20 years of age). The most common ABC sites are the long bones of the limbs, the vertebrae, and the cranial bone. Aneurysmal bone cysts in the skull base or ethmoid sinus have been but rarely reported worldwide. The authors report on a patient with a very large ABC in the skull base and the
