Establishment and effects of allograft and synthetic bone graft substitute treatment of a critical size metaphyseal bone defect model in the sheep femur.

Assessment of bone graft material efficacy is difficult in humans, since invasive methods like staged CT scans or biopsies are ethically unjustifiable. Therefore, we developed a novel large animal model for the verification of a potential transformation of synthetic bone graft substitutes into vital bone. The model combines multiple imaging methods with corresponding histology in standardized critical sized cancellous bone defect. Cylindrical bone voids (10 ml) were created in the medial femoral condyles of both hind legs (first surgery at right hind leg, second surgery 3 months later at left

Wax on, wax off: a case report discussing a potential pitfall of dissolvable bone wax substitutes such as Ostene® in neurosurgery.

Bone wax alternatives, such as Ostene®, are marketed as substitutes for traditional bone wax, offering the benefits of resorbability, improved bone osteogenesis, and reduced inflammatory reactions, granulomas, and infection risks. However, the limitations of these agents in cranial neurosurgery, particularly for sealing exposed air cells during skull base repair, are underreported. We present an early post-operative case of subcutaneous emphysema, pneumocephalus, and bone flap infection following the failure of Ostene® to provide a durable seal of air cells after temporal craniotomy and tumour

Percutaneous Injection of Calcium Phosphate Bone Substitute into a Chronic Calcaneal Bone Marrow Lesion Associated with a Fragility/Insufficiency Fracture: A Case Report.

Pathologic fractures and marrow lesions of bones in the human foot and ankle can occur secondary to a variety of risk factors. The calcaneus is a rearfoot bone that provides support during weightbearing activities and walking. Although low-risk stress injuries to the bones in the foot and ankle are predominantly treated conservatively in low-demand patients, there are situations where surgical intervention is warranted. Surgical treatment options for calcaneal bone marrow lesions (BML) secondary to stress fractures are dearth with limited evidence supporting the use of the subchondroplasty (SC

In Vivo Performance of a Novel Hyper-Crosslinked Carbohydrate Polymer Bone Graft Substitute for Spinal Fusion.

Bone graft materials are essential for achieving arthrodesis after spine surgery. Safe bone graft products, with osteoinductive, osteoconductive properties and the ability to monitor fusion in real-time, are highly desirable. A novel hyper-crosslinked carbohydrate polymer (HCCP) bone graft substitute was shown to aid in bone regeneration in critical-size defect studies in a rabbit model. These studies further evaluated the in vivo application of HCCP as a bone graft substitute in an ovine model of spinal fusion and a retrospective study in adult human spine surgery patients. Sheep studies demo

Photocurable Hydrogel Substrate-Better Potential Substitute on Bone-Marrow-Derived Dendritic Cells Culturing.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are recognized as the most effective antigen-presenting cells at present. DCs have corresponding therapeutic effects in tumor immunity, transplantation immunity, infection inflammation and cardiovascular diseases, and the activation of T cells is dependent on DCs. However, normal bone-marrow-derived Dendritic cells (BMDCs) cultured on conventional culture plates are easy to be activated during culturing, and it is difficult to imitate the internal immune function. Here, we reported a novel BMDCs culturing with hydrogel substrate (CCHS), where we synthesized low substitute

Open-wedge osteotomy for thumb radial angulation in Apert syndrome using a bone-graft substitute.

A short thumb with radial angulation causes loss of hand function in patients with Apert syndrome. Although past reports have described various procedures for the correction of the thumb, there has been no consensus on the best procedure. This study aimed to assess the clinical and radiographic results of a surgical technique for the correction of a thumb radial angulation deformity: open-wedge osteotomy using a bone-graft substitute. Ten patients (18 thumbs) who underwent open-wedge osteotomy on the proximal phalange using a bone-graft substitute were evaluated retrospectively. The open-wedge

Individualized Techniques of Implant Coating with an Antibiotic-Loaded, Hydroxyapatite/Calcium Sulphate Bone Graft Substitute.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of fracture- or non-union-related infections has persistently been a major challenge for both patients and treating surgeons. With rising aging of patients and increasing comorbidities, combined with the heterogeneity of germs and any number of multi-resistance against standard antibiotics, a successful treatment is increasingly difficult. One potential solution could be a custom-made individualized antibacterial coating of standard implants with a biphasic degradable biocarrier (Cerament G/V, supplied by Bonesupport AB, Lund, Sweden) that releases high doses of antib
