OBJECTIVE: This study identified potential risk factors for suicidal behavior in patients with borderline personality disorder defined by the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline Patients and by DSM-III-R criteria for patients who did and did not attempt suicide.
METHOD: Histories of suicide attempts and attempt characteristics were obtained by Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia interviews from 84 patients with borderline personality disorder and were related to severity of borderline pathology, diagnostic comorbidity, and state and trait symptoms.
RESULTS: There were 61 patie

The authors administered the Diagnostic Interview Schedule to 21 patients with borderline personality disorder. The patients met criteria for various other DSM-III diagnoses, meeting exclusion criteria in some cases, and not in other cases. Frequency distribution of each diagnosis and the diagnoses of each individual patient, are presented. Affective disorder was the most common diagnosis (85%). Of these, 62% had primary major depression, and 23% had secondary depression. Other diagnoses include bipolar disorder, dysthymia, panic, agoraphobia, alcohol and Drug abuse, somatization disorder, and

BACKGROUND: Suicide risk is high in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Whether risk levels of and risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) are similar or different in these disorders remains unclear, as few directly comparative studies exist. The relationship of short-term changes in depression severity and SI is underinvestigated, and might differ across groups, for example, between BPD and non-BPD patients.
METHODS: We followed, for 6 months, a cohort of treatment-seeking, major depressive

BACKGROUND: Accurately perceiving and learning about others’ personalities is crucial for successful social relationships. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable interpersonal dynamics, an unstable and negative self-concept, and a tendency to evaluate others unfavorably. Individuals with BPD are also more likely to be viewed negatively by others and experience social stigmatization. This study investigated whether women with BPD exhibit negativity biases when evaluating their own and others’ personality traits, and how these biases influence learning about others. METHODS:

To investigate how time perception may contribute to the symptoms of self-harming Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients, 19 self-harming BPD inpatients and 39 normal controls were given measures of time perception, impulsivity, personality, emotion, and BPD characteristics. A test sensitive to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function ("Frontal" Behavior Questionnaire) was also administered, as the OFC has been associated with impulsivity and time perception. BPD patients produced less time than controls, and this correlated with impulsiveness and other characteristics commonly associated w

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition frequently associated with Substance Use Disorder (SUD), with high rates of comorbidity and poor clinical outcomes. Impulsivity and emotional dysregulation are core features shared by both disorders, suggesting common underlying mechanisms. However, less is known about the role of additional factors-such as alexithymia, coping strategies, and quality of life in contributing to dual diagnosis and SUD severity in individuals with BPD. This study aims to: (1) examine the clinical and demographic variables in a sam

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the Personality Disorder most frequently associated with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). According to different models, the Behavioral dysregulation-BPD subgroup has a higher prevalence of SUD and certain impulsivity behaviors than the other two subgroups.
METHODS: Out of 156 BPD patients, 47 were in the Behavioral dysregulation-BPD subgroup, 55 in Affective dysregulation, and 54 in Disturbed relatedness. All patients completed the SCID-II for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders, SCID-I for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (

The proposal for the diagnosis of personality disorders (PDs) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5;American Psychiatric Association, in preparation) involves, in part, the use of elevated scores on dimensional personality traits. For instance, the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in the DSM-5 will require evidence of self- and interpersonal impairment as well as elevated scores on traits of emotional lability, anxiousness, separation insecurity, depressivity, impulsivity, risk taking, and hostility. Using a sample of individuals fro

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex and heterogeneous condition characterized by emotional instability, impulsivity, and impaired regulation of interpersonal relationships. This narrative review integrates findings from recent neuroimaging, neurochemical, and treatment studies to identify core neurobiological mechanisms and highlight translational potential. Evidence from 112 studies published up to 2025 is synthesized, encompassing structural MRI, resting-state and task-based functional MRI, EEG, PET, and emerging machine learning applications. Consistent disruptions are observ

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition characterized by instability in identity, relationships, and affect. Individuals, with BPD typically lack a coherent sense of self, are highly sensitive to interpersonal stressors, experience intense fluctuations in mood, and frequently engage in impulsive and self-destructive behaviors. Although both empirical research and development of effective psychotherapy have evidently progressed over the past years, many aspects regarding the structure of experience and the life-world typical for persons with BPD are not yet fully

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often complicated by comorbid major depressive episodes (MDEs), which can occur as part of major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD). Such comorbidity is related to worse outcomes in both disorders. Subsyndromal features of BPD are also common in depression. However, studies of simultaneous changes in BPD and depression severities are scarce, and their interactions are poorly understood.
AIMS: Studying the associations between changes in BPD and depression symptoms over the course of an MDE.
METHODS: In a 6-month naturalisti

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity studies in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder (known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, BFRBs) have traditionally not examined rates of borderline personality disorder. When it co-occurs, borderline personality disorder may necessitate different treatment approaches and if untreated may interfere with the response to the treatment for trichotillomania or skin picking disorder. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the rate of co-occurring borderline personality disorder in BFRBs; and (2) explore associations between co-occurring borderline personal

This review offers a critique of recent attempts to reconceptualize some cases of borderline personality disorder (BPD) within the newer diagnosis of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). The CPTSD construct focuses on the role of childhood trauma in shaping relational problems in adulthood, difficulties that have been previously seen as features of a personality disorder. The CPTSD model fails to consider the role of heritable personality traits, as well as a broader range of psychosocial risk factors. This review proposes that a biopsychosocial model of BPD is more comprehensive, ta

The clinical difference between bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder has always been a diagnostic challenge, especially with type II bipolar disorder and subthreshold symptoms, opening a diagnostic bias with the consequent repercussions of inappropriate treatment. Both pathologies are often misdiagnosed initially. The objective of this article is to emphasise the main clinical differences between the two pathologies. We present the case of a patient with a long history of psychiatric symptoms that started in childhood, with considerable functional impairment, who met the criter

This study aims at investigating attention and impulsivity differences between borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder, as both diseases may share neuropsychological deficits. Differential cognitive outcomes on the Continuous Performance Test-II were observed between disorders, and also when compared to healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggesting lamotrigine as an effective treatment in bipolar disorder, and perhaps borderline personality disorder, a common comorbid personality disorder in bipolar patients, led us to retrospectively examine patients from two bipolar studies to investigate this pattern of comorbidity, and to determine whether lamotrigine effected the dimensions of borderline personality.
METHODS: Fifteen months following entry into either study, we retrospectively assessed DSM-IV dimensions of borderline personality disorder pre- and post-treatment with lamotrigine in 35 bipolar pa

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric condition often accompanied by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with a substantial prevalence of trauma history among affected individuals. The clinical, cognitive, and cerebral parallels shared with PTSD suggest a trauma-related etiology for BPD. Studies consistently demonstrate a reduction in hippocampal volume in individuals with BPD, echoing findings in PTSD. However, the interpretation of this shared neurobiological profile remains contentious, with ongoing debates regarding the independenc

Borderline Personality (BPD) and Bipolar (BP) disorders stimulate an academic debate between their distinction and the inclusion of Borderline in the Bipolar spectrum. Opponents to this inclusion attribute the important differences and possible diagnostic incomprehension to overlapping symptoms. We tested 248 Borderline and 113 Bipolar patients, consecutively admitted to the Psychiatric Unit, through DSM-IV Axis I and II Disorders (SCID-I/II), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Borderline Personality Disorder Sev

Borderline personality disorders are complex clinical states with highly polymorphic symptoms and signs, leading to delays in their diagnosis and treatment. All international classifications emphasize certain clinical criteria such as unstable identity and interpersonal relationships, feelings of emptiness or boredom, and pathological impulsiveness. The prevalence is about 2%, with a female-male sex ratio of 2 or 3 to 1. Both adolescents and adults may be affected There is a high risk of suicide, addictive behaviors, eating disorders, and criminality. These individuals frequently have a histor

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric disorder marked by severe affective instability and poor interpersonal functioning. Existing literature has highlighted that individuals with BPD are at greater risk for a wide range of adverse physiological and psychosocial outcomes in the perinatal period compared to perinatal individuals without BPD. However, to date, no systematic review has addressed the prevalence of BPD and borderline personality features (BPF) in pregnant and postpartum individuals. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by searching three databases (P
