'Trials and Tribulations': The Ambivalent Influence of Temporary Accommodation on Mental Health Recovery in Chronically Homeless Adults.

Relatively few studies have explicitly examined whether and how shelter-type, temporary or emergency accommodation shapes homeless clients' personal (mental health) recovery. A transatlantic phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to examine the influence of those services on personal recovery. Eighteen chronically homeless adults with a history of serious mental illness were recruited from several temporary accommodation services in New York City (NYC), U.S., and Glasgow, Scotland. Participants completed repeat in-depth interviews and a novel one-week multimedia mobile phone diary. T

Examining Associations Between Social Networking Site Alcohol-Specific Social Norms, Posting Behavior, and Drinking to Cope During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Emerging research suggests that there may be important links between social networking site (SNS) use and alcohol consumption specific to COVID-19. In addition, substantial research indicates that descriptive normative perceptions are a strong predictor of drinking behavior more generally. However, less is known about SNS-specific norms and how they might be associated with health-related behavior. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to determine whether descriptive normative perceptions for alcohol posting related to COVID-19 on SNSs are associated with both personal SNS posting behavior

Sensation seeking in a community sample of French gamblers: Comparison between strategic and non-strategic gamblers.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between sensation seeking and gambling disorder (GD) in a community sample of gamblers (when controlling for the effect of substance use, gender and age) and see whether sensation seeking scores depend on the gambling activity when comparing strategic and non-strategic gamblers. A total of 380 gamblers was recruited. First, pathological gamblers (PGs) (n =143) were compared to non-pathological gamblers (NPGs) (n =237). Second, strategic gamblers (n =93) were compared to non-strategic gamblers (n =110). Sociodemographic data, gambling

The relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder and smoking outcome expectancies among U.S. military veterans who served since September 11, 2001.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased rates of smoking although little is known regarding the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The current study examined expectations about smoking outcomes among smokers with and without PTSD. The sample included 96 veterans (mean age of 34 years) and included 17% women and 50% racial minorities. Smoking expectancies were measured with the Smoking Consequences Questionnaire-Adult (Copeland, Brandon, & Quinn, 1995). Consistent with previous work suggesting that smokers with PTSD smoke in an effort to reduce negative affect, u

Emotion regulation in pathological skin picking: findings from a non-treatment seeking sample.

Pathological skin picking (PSP) is characterized by excessive picking of the skin, resulting in significant distress or functional impairment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the emotion regulation hypothesis of PSP. University students with PSP (n = 55) and without history of PSP (n = 55) were asked to retrospectively rate the intensity of affective states before, during, and after skin picking episodes. The results showed that for a majority of the PSP sufferers, intensity of certain negative affective states (i.e. anxiety, tension or boredom) was pronounced just before picki

Changes in utterance frequency with long-term use of an information support robot for older adults with cognitive impairment living alone.

This study aimed to elucidate the effect of introducing an information support robot on utterance frequency and confirm the change in utterance frequency after long-term use. We presented an information support robot installed with individualized content to three older adults with cognitive impairment who live alone at home or in an assisted living residence (mean age 83.7±SD 5.4 years). Changes in the participants' utterance frequency over six months following the intervention of long-term robot use in actual living spaces were quantitatively recorded and analyzed. Two participants' total utt

Detailed Emotional Profile of Secondary Education Students Toward Learning Physics and Chemistry.

The present research arises from the need to identify the emotions that K-7 to K-10 students experience toward the learning of Physics and Chemistry, since it is a fact that there is a decrease in the number of students choosing itineraries related to Science. Different blocks of contents have been considered in each subject in order to identify emotions toward each one of them. The considered sample consisted of 149 K-8 students, 152 K-9 students and 130 K-10 students from several middle and high schools in Badajoz (Spain) during the 2014-2015 school year. Students experienced more positive e

Leisure behavior of youth with short stature, delayed puberty and diabetes mellitus.

There is some evidence to suggest that adolescents with endocrinological disorders such as short stature (SS), delayed puberty (DP), or diabetes mellitus (DM) may display significant social or psychological problems. The purpose of our study was to examine the leisure behaviors and experiences of these adolescents. Of the 178 adolescents (all of whom had an endocrinological problem) 83 were male and 91 were female. We found the leisure behaviors and experiences of adolescents with SS, DP and DM (the group) were similar to adolescents with other endocrine disorders (comparison group) and to sev

Appetitive search behaviors and stereotypies in polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Stereotypies in captive animals have been defined as repetitive, largely invariant patterns of behavior that serve no obvious goal or function. Stereotypies are commonly attributed to boredom or stress and are typically treated by enriching captivity with distracting, appealing stimuli. These stimuli often include food presented at times other than regular feedings, and as a result, engage species-typical foraging behaviors that reduce stereotypies. The present work on captive polar bears is based on the view that stereotypies are due in part to inadequate support for the expression of species

The environment as an important component of neurorehabilitation: introducing the BEEhive - brain and enriched environment (BEE) lab (hive).

PURPOSE: Contemporary healthcare design often overlooks the environment as a resource for supporting patient well-being and rehabilitation, particularly in neurotrauma care. The prioritisation of safety and efficiency has created stressful spaces that negatively impact patient needs. This paper explores whether environmental enrichment can enhance rehabilitation outcomes for individuals recovering from neurotrauma. It also introduces the BEEhive laboratory, a multidisciplinary initiative integrating environmental enrichment principles into healthcare. METHODOLOGY: This paper reviews literatur

Beliefs About Cannabis Use Among Male and Female Andalusian Adolescents.

Objectives: This study assessed potential differences between girls and boys in the prevalence rates of cannabis use, sociodemographic factors, and beliefs about cannabis use. Methods: 1,896 Andalusian adolescents aged 14-18 participated in an online survey based on the I-Change model. The survey assessed their beliefs about cannabis use, including attitudes, social influences, self-efficacy, action planning, and intention to use. Multivariate analyses of variance were then conducted to examine potential gender differences in these beliefs, while controlling for last month's cannabis use. Resu

Eating expectancies and hedonic hunger among individuals with bulimia-spectrum eating disorders who plan binge-eating episodes.

OBJECTIVE: Binge planning (BP; i.e., preparatory thoughts and actions to facilitate future binge-eating episodes) is hypothesized to distract individuals from negative affect and increase the salience of food. Thus, individuals who engage in BP may report greater positive eating expectancies (i.e., beliefs about the outcomes of eating) and hedonic hunger (i.e., desire to eat for pleasure), as BP may increase the likelihood of obtaining these expected outcomes; but empirical tests of this possibility are needed. METHOD: Prior to starting treatment, adults (N = 86) with bulimia-spectrum eating

Gender Differences in the Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Potentially Addictive Behaviors: An Emotion-Mediated Analysis.

We study the impact of the spring 2020 lockdown in France on gender-related potentially addictive behaviors and associated negative emotions. We rely on an online survey we administered 1 week after the beginning of the lockdown, with responses collected within 2 weeks after the beginning of the lockdown (N = 1,087). We focus on potential addictions to non-creative activities as food consumption and smartphone usage (female-related), and videogame play (male-related). We find that women were about 1.6 times more likely than men to losing control of their usual diet and about 2.3 times more lik

Exploring pathways into and out of amphetamine type stimulant use at critical turning points: a qualitative interview study.

Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS) are increasingly used drugs globally. There is limited evidence about what shapes ATS use at critical turning points located within drug using pathways. Using turning point theory, as part of a life course approach, the ATTUNE study aimed to understand which social, economic and individual factors shape pathways into and out of ATS use. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews (n = 70) were undertaken with individuals who had used ATS, or had been exposed to them at least once. Our findings show that turning points for initiation were linked to pleasure, curios

The placebo effect and its clinical associations in gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although gambling disorder is prevalent and functionally impairing, no FDA-approved medications exist for its treatment. The ability of clinical trials to detect the benefits of active treatment has been hindered by an unusually high placebo response. Virtually nothing is known about baseline clinical characteristics that might predict placebo response in those with gambling disorder. METHODS: Participants (N = 152) assigned to placebo were pooled from multiple double-blind trials of gambling disorder. Participants were classified as placebo responders or non-responders based on a

Female Fire-Setters: Gender-Associated Psychological and Psychopathological Features.

OBJECTIVE: Female fire-setters are reported to commit nearly one-third of deliberately set fires, yet there are limited studies examining the characteristics that distinguish them from suitable comparison groups. The aim of this study is to compare incarcerated female fire-setters with incarcerated male fire-setters and female offender controls on psychopathological and psychological features that could be targeted via therapeutic interventions. METHOD: We recruited 65 female fire-setters, 128 male fire-setters, and 63 female offenders from the prison estate. Participants completed a battery
