Herpes zoster is caused by reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus (VZV), typically occurring in older adults or immunocompromised individuals, and is rarely seen in infants. We report a rare case of herpes zoster in a 9-month-old infant, likely due to intrauterine exposure to VZV. The patient presented with dermatomally distributed vesicular lesions on the left anterior chest and back. Treatment included intravenous acyclovir, oral antiviral therapy, semiconductor laser therapy, boric acid compresses, and traditional Chinese herbal fumigation.

Otinum, a new drug made in Poland, was used to treat inflammatory diseases of the middle ear of 40 patients. The drug was applied topically as drops or tampons inserted into the external acoustic meatus. As controls, 16 patients with identical problems, who were treated with 3% boric acid alcohol, were used. Otinum had a distinct pain-killing and anti-inflammatory effect, as well as a mild keratolytic effect. Otinum is recommended to be used for acute otitis media and exacerbated chronic otitis media in the absence of pathogenic microorganisms.

Through clinical observations and known chemical properties, this series of studies delineates properties of a new bioadhesive agent available commercially (Zilactin). A controlled chemotherapy trial of trachoma was carried out in a Tunisian oasis among schoolchildren with active disease. We compared 1% tetracycline ointment (79 patients) or 1% rifampicin ointment (76 patients) with 5% boric acid ointment (79 patients). Conidiobolus coronatus is a zygomycete that commonly involves the rhinomaxillary area in humans and animals. Infections are reported mostly from West Africa and South East Asia. Vaginal involvement in humans has not been described before. We report a case of C. coronatus infection involving the vagina that was successfully treated.

INTRODUCTION: Eight new cases of chronic otomastoiditis due to nontuberculous mycobacteria were reported at Center Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine (CHUSJ) between 2008 and 2018.
