[A Case of Right Frontal Dermoid Cyst with Temporal Imaging Changes in the Desease Course].

Dermoid cysts are rare benign intracranial neoplasms derived from embryonal remnant tissues. Here, we describe a case of dermoid cyst located in the right frontal lobe, which showed repeated changes on CT. An 11-year-old girl was referred to our hospital to treat a brain neoplasm. Brain CT and MRI revealed a cystic tumor in the right frontal lobe. Incidentally, brain CT had been performed 6, 2, and 1 year before the presentation, which demonstrated repeated changes in the tumor over the clinical course. Gross total resection of the tumor was achieved through right frontal craniotomy. Histologi

Photodynamic therapy of intracranial tissues: a preclinical comparative study of four different photosensitizers.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of four different photosensitizers for intracranial photodynamic therapy (PDT) of normal brain tissues and an intracranial tumor was investigated in rabbits, using the photodynamic threshold model. SUMMARY: PDT is currently being investigated as an adjuvant treatment to surgical resection and/or radio chemotherapy of intracranial neoplasms. While possible neurotoxic side effects of the treatment have been noted, only limited preclinical data quantifying the response of intracranial normal and tumor tissues following PDT are available. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The p

Investigating the Pathology-Related Astroglial Plasticity in the Human Cerebral Cortex.

Evaluation of astrocyte proliferation in human brain pathology plays a key role in the diagnostic and prognostic assessment of diseases, especially in cases of benign or malignant brain neoplasms. However, the proliferative potential of nonneoplastic astrocytes within the affected human brain parenchyma has not been well defined. Given the beneficial functions of proliferating reactive astrocytes for brain repair in experimental models of stroke and trauma, investigating the context-specific potential of human astrocytes to proliferate will be a major step forward in exploiting their roles in

Cancer prevalence and care disparities among individuals with intellectual disabilities: a cross-sectional pan-cancer analysis.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disability (ID) face considerable health disparities, with cancer being among the most frequent causes of premature death. A systematic analysis of the health care situation is necessary to further strengthen treatment and support for this highly vulnerable population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study we analysed nationwide German outpatient health insurance data of 437 802 people with ID, which were compared to an age-, sex-, and district code-matched sample of people without ID. RESULTS: Overall, people with ID (4.2% with cancer) show

Symmetrical Curvilinear Cytotoxic Edema Along the Surface of the Brain Stem: A Probable New Magnetic Resonance Imaging Finding of Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis.

Lung cancer is one of the most common neoplasms to appear leptomeningeal metastasis (LM). Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is better diagnostic choice for LM and usually shows focal nodular or diffuse linear enhancement on the leptomeninges along the sulci and tentorium in the brain. We experienced atypical 2 cases of lung cancer in patients who showed unusual brain MRI finding of symmetrical curvilinear or band-like, nonenhancing cytotoxic edema along the surface of the brain stem. This finding is unique and different from the general findings of leptomeningeal metastasis. T

Epilepsy in patients with brain metastases triggered by intravenous contrast medium.

187 patients with histologically proven primary neoplasms underwent computed tomography (CT) of the brain following intravenous administration of contrast medium. Eight developed focal epileptic seizures 2 to 4 minutes after the start of the injection. In three of these patients, in whom there was CT evidence of bilateral mass lesions of the brain, this epileptic activity became generalised into grand mal seizures, and two died in status epilepticus. In the other five patients with unilateral deposits in the brain, the focal fits corresponded to the site of the lesion shown by CT. Three of the

Pericallosal Lipoma and Cortical Dysplasia Masquerading as a Glioma.

Intracranial lipomas represent approximately 1% of intracranial lesions generally felt to represent the abnormal persistence of the meninx primitiva and are commonly accompanied by various developmental brain abnormalities. We report a case of midline intracranial lipoma and evolving frontal lobe fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) abnormality concerning for glial neoplasm in a patient with intractable epilepsy. Our case shows evolving magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features over two decades raising suspicion for low-grade neoplasm which was ultimately found to represent cortical dys

Primary sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma presenting with bilateral retrobulbar optic neuropathy.

A 43-year-old man presented with acute bilateral visual loss. Ophthalmologic examination revealed no light perception in the right eye and a visual acuity of 20/50 in the left eye with a right afferent pupillary defect. Ophthalmoscopic examination was normal. Brain MRI showed an intracranial but extra-axial mass in the floor of the anterior cranial fossa extending along the olfactory groove and into the sinonasal vault. Endoscopic biopsy showed a high-grade neoplasm consistent with sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. This case report highlights an unusual clinical presentation for this rare

A Pediatric Case of Extraneural Subcutaneous Metastasis of Ependymoma.

Ependymoma is the third most common brain tumor in children. Extracranial metastases of ependymomas are uncommon. A 21-month-old Japanese boy was diagnosed to be brain dead due to a posterior fossa (PF) brain tumor. Surgical resection of the tumor was not performed. Twenty-seven months later, he developed a truncal subcutaneous tumor, which was pathologically diagnosed as PF ependymoma group A. We observed the intracranial recurrence of the brain tumor, an invasion to the left orbit, and a neoplasm in his liver before he died. This case suggests that PF ependymoma group A can metastasize extra

Unusual findings in brain biopsies of two patients with acute magnetic resonance imaging lesions associated with focal seizures.

PURPOSE: Patients with focal seizures often have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities in the brain region of their presumed seizure focus. Neoplasms, ischemic infarctions, inflammatory processes, and other specific pathologic entities have been diagnosed by biopsies of such MRI abnormalities. Two patients with this presentation had brain lesion biopsies with a leading presumptive diagnosis of glial neoplasm but were found to have indistinct histopathology. METHODS: Each patient was initially seen with focal seizures (right parietal region, right hippocampus) corresponding with focal

Descriptive epidemiology of malignant brain tumors in the Swiss Canton of Vaud.

Incidence registration and survival data from brain neoplasms have been analyzed from the population-based system of the Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud, which has been operating in a particularly favorable environment for surveillance and using an integrated and homogeneous system of cancer registration. Between 1974 and 1987, a total of 401 cases was registered, corresponding to an age-adjusted rate for all malignant histotypes of 5.3/100,000 (world standard) for the period 1975-1980 and 5.0 for 1981-1987 in males, and of 3.9 and 3.7, respectively, in females. Thus, no increase i

Clinical and Radiological Characteristics of Non-Benign Pineal Cyst Lesions in Children.

Background: With the increasing availability and advances in brain imaging, pineal cyst lesions (PCL) are becoming a common finding in the pediatric population. In the absence of evidence-based guidelines, optimal diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have not been established, and there is a risk of under- or overtreatment of these patients. Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical presentation and radiological features of PCL in a cohort of pediatric patients and to identify clinical parameters more commonly associated with neoplasms in the pineal region. In addition, th

Listeria Bacteremia Presenting With Cerebral Abscess and Endocarditis in an Elderly Patient With Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenia.

Central nervous system involvement by Listeria monocytogenes usually presents as meningitis, meningoencephalitis or, less frequently, rhombencephalitis. Listerial brain abscesses are rare. Moreover, only 5-8% of listerial bacteremia is complicated by infective endocarditis (IE). A 70-year-old man with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) presented to our emergency department with acute onset of altered mental status and right-sided weakness. He was afebrile, with no heart murmurs or peripheral IE stigmata. Neurologic examination showed disorientation, expressive aphasia, and right-sided hemip

Spinal ectopic choroid plexus papilloma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old male neutered Russian Blue cat was presented with a 2-month history of progressive non-ambulatory paraparesis. Spinal MRI revealed a well-demarcated, compressive intradural extramedullary mass at the level of T1 vertebra. The mass had subtle hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, was isointense on T1-weighted images and had diffuse, marked enhancement following gadolinium administration. Neuroaxis MRI, including limited brain sequences, excluded other visible lesions. Thoracic and abdominal radiographs were unremarkable. The mass was resected via a dorsal C7-T2 lamin

[Resting-state fMRI in preoperative non-invasive mapping in patients with left hemisphere glioma].

Maximum resection and preservation of neurological function are main principles in surgery of brain tumors, especially glial neoplasms with diffuse growth. Therefore, exact localizing of eloquent brain areas is an important component in surgical planning ensuring optimal resection with minimal postoperative neurological deficit. Functional MRI is used to localize eloquent brain areas adjacent to the tumor. This paper is an initial stage in analysis of resting-state fMRI in assessment of functional changes of neuronal activity caused by brain gliomas of different localization. We report two pat

Nonleukaemic second malignancies following childhood acute lymphocytic leukaemia. A report of 19 cases from the Federal Republic of Germany.

Nineteen second malignant neoplasms (SMN)2 occurring after successful treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) are reported from the Federal Republic of Germany. Eighteen children were diagnosed as having ALL within a ten-year period, in which the total number of newly diagnosed ALL was about 5600 in this country. The incidence of a SMN following childhood ALL is calculated to be 2% after a 4-14 years' follow-up period. Of the 19 SMN, 7 are Hodgkin's disease, 1 malignant histiocytosis, 3 thyroid carcinomas, 3 brain tumours, and 5 other solid neoplasms. Second leukaemias were

Detection of malignant soft tissue tumors in bone imaging.

A total of 2530 consecutive bone scans were examined to evaluate the number and the type of soft tissue neoplasms detected with bone-seeking phosphonates. Sixty-eight primary or secondary soft tissue neoplasms of 63 patients accumulated 99mTc -methylene diphosphonate and 2 accumulated 99mTc -diphosphonate, and one metastasis was seen as a nonactive 'cold' focus in the urinary bladder. The localization of tumors was: 19 in the lung, 15 in the liver, 11 in the kidney, 10 in the peritoneal cavity or ascites, 5 in the large bowel, 4 in the vascular or lymphatic system, 3 in the connective tissue o

Dorsal Midbrain Syndrome: Clinical and Imaging Features in 75 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Dorsal midbrain syndrome (DMS) consists of a constellation of clinical features, including reduced upgaze, pupillary light-near dissociation, lid retraction, convergence retraction, and eye misalignment. This syndrome results mostly from intrinsic or extrinsic mesodiencephalic tumors or strokes, obstructive hydrocephalus, failure of cerebrospinal fluid shunting to correct obstructive hydrocephalus, and head trauma. Published reports that include imaging corroboration are based on relatively small cohorts and have not included comprehensive patient self-reports on the impact of thes
