OBJECTIVE: Mammographically defined percent breast density is an important risk factor for breast cancer, but the epidemiology of this trait is poorly understood. Although several studies have investigated the associations between reproductive factors and density, few data are available on the associations of breast density and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), physical activity, education, alcohol and smoking.
METHODS: We investigated the associations of known and suspected breast cancer risk factors with breast density in a large breast cancer family study. Information was collected on members of 4

BACKGROUND: Understanding locoregional recurrence (LRR) risk is important in breast cancer, as it relates directly to breast cancer-associated mortality. Individualised LRR risk estimation should inform treatment and surveillance strategies. Increased mammographic breast density has been identified as a risk factor for the development of breast cancer. However, the precise relationship between mammographic density and breast cancer LRR remains unclear.
AIMS: To perform a systematic review and relative risk meta-analysis to explore the assocation between breast mammographic density and breast

BACKGROUND: Black women have lower Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) breast density than White women, likely due to body mass index (BMI) differences. No studies have directly compared BMI, race, and volumetric breast density in relation to breast cancer risk. This study examines the associations between BI-RADS density and Volpara-derived volumetric breast density measures and breast cancer risk in non-Hispanic Black and White women, focusing on BMI’s influence. METHODS: A nested case-control study was conducted with 3699 women (526 Black, 3173 White) from Mayo Clinic and the

Although high mammographic density is one of the strongest predictors of breast cancer risk, X-ray based mammography cannot be performed before the recommended screening age, especially not in adolescents and young women. Therefore, new techniques for breast density measurement are of interest. In this pilot study in Guam and Hawaii, we evaluated a radiation-free, bioimpedance device called Electrical Breast DensitometerTM (EBD; senoSENSE Medical Systems, Inc., Ontario, Canada) for measuring breast density in 95 women aged 31-82 years and 41 girls aged 8-18 years. Percent density (PD) was esti

INTRODUCTION: Percent mammographic density (PMD) is a strong and highly heritable risk factor for breast cancer. Studies of the role of PMD in familial breast cancer may require controls, such as the sisters of cases, selected from the same 'risk set' as the cases. The use of sister controls would allow control for factors that have been shown to influence risk of breast cancer such as race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status and a family history of breast cancer, but may introduce 'overmatching' and attenuate case-control differences in PMD.
METHODS: To examine the potential effects of using sis

BACKGROUND: We have examined the relationships between the measured properties of breast tissue and mammographic density and other risk factors for breast cancer, using breast tissue obtained at forensic autopsy and not selected for the presence of abnormalities.
METHODS: We used randomly selected tissue blocks taken from breast tissue slices obtained by s.c. mastectomy at the time of forensic autopsy to measure histologic features using quantitative microscopy. The proportions of the biopsy occupied by cells (estimated by nuclear area), glandular structures, and collagen were determined. The

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether the association between family history of breast cancer in first-degree relatives and breast cancer risk varies by breast density.
METHODS: Women aged 40 years and older who underwent screening between 2009 and 2010 were followed up until 2020. Family history was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Using Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS), breast density was categorized into dense breast (heterogeneously or extremely dense) and non-dense breast (almost entirely fatty or scattered areas of fibro-glandular). Cox regression mo

PURPOSE: To determine which modalities [2D mammography (2D), digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), whole breast sonography (WBS)] are optimal for screening depending on breast density.
METHODS: Institutional retrospective cohort study of 2013 screening mammograms (16,789), sorted by modalities and density.
RESULTS: Cancer detection is increased by adding WBS to 2D (P=.02) for the overall study population. Recall rate was lowest with 2D+DBT (10.2%, P<.001) and highest with 2D+DBT+WBS (23.6%, P<.001) for the overall study population as well.

PURPOSE: Age and body mass index (BMI) are critical considerations when assessing individual breast cancer risk, particularly for women with dense breasts. However, age- and BMI-standardized estimates of breast density are not available for screen-aged women, and little is known about the distribution of breast density in women aged < 40. This cross-sectional study uses three different modalities: optical breast spectroscopy (OBS), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and mammography, to describe the distributions of breast density across categories of age and BMI.
METHODS: Breast density

AIM: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the associations between low and high-fat dairy food (DF) intake and breast density (BD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 775 premenopausal and 771 postmenopausal women recruited during screening mammography completed a food frequency questionnaire. Adjusted linear regression models were used to assess the associations.
RESULTS: As frequency quartiles of high-fat DF consumption increased, the adjusted mean of absolute BD increased from 31.5 to 36.1 cm2 for all women (ptrend=0.0034) and from 42.4 to 50.1 cm2 for premenopausal women (ptrend=0

PURPOSE: Previous studies suggest that coffee and caffeine intake may be associated with reduced breast cancer risk. We investigated the association of coffee and caffeine intake with mammographic breast density by woman's menopausal status and, in postmenopausal women, by hormone therapy (HT).
METHODS: This study included 4130 cancer-free women within the Nurses' Health Study and Nurses' Health Study II cohorts. Percent breast density (PD) was measured from digitized film mammograms using a computer-assisted thresholding technique and square root-transformed for the analysis. Average cumulat

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the impact of breast density on the sensitivity of a population-based digital mammography screening programme (SP) as key evaluation parameter.
METHODS: 25,576 examinations were prospectively stratified from ACR category 1 to 4 for increments of 25 % density during independent double reading. SP was calculated as number of screen-detected cancers divided by the sum of screen-detected plus interval cancers (24-months period) per ACR category, related to the first reading (a), second reading (b) and highest stratification if discrepant (c). Chi-square tests were used for

INTRODUCTION: Understanding whether mammographic density (MD) is associated with all breast tumor subtypes and whether the strength of association varies by age is important for utilizing MD in risk models.
METHODS: Data were pooled from six studies including 3414 women with breast cancer and 7199 without who underwent screening mammography. Percent MD was assessed from digitized film-screen mammograms using a computer-assisted threshold technique. We used polytomous logistic regression to calculate breast cancer odds according to tumor type, histopathological characteristics, and receptor (e

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of Paget's disease of the vulva and the breast remains limited. Current evidence supports the fact that angiogenesis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Therefore, we sought to define its role, as correlated with microvessel density, in Paget's disease of the vulva and the breast. Microvessels were analysed using anti-von Willebrand factor antibody in 105 cases of Paget's disease of the vulva and the breast comprising 71 cases of Paget's disease of the vulva, including 8 cases with invasive disease, and 34 cases of Paget's dise

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to examine 54 patients with breast cancer. A clinical comparison group comprised 50 healthy women. All the examinees were aged 45 to 55 years. Bone mineral density was measured in the lumbar spine, proximal femur, and ultradistal antibrachium. The X-ray densitometric values of bone tissues in perimenopausal women with breast cancer were not found to be abnormal, which led to the conclusion that there were no significant bone metabolic disturbances. Along with this it was established that the women at this age had considerably reduced bone mineral densi

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study showed that postmenopausal continuous combined estrogen-progestogen therapy (EPT) significantly increases the risk of breast cancer, thus confirming the results from large epidemiological studies. These results were predicted approximately 15 years previously based on the epidemiology of breast cancer and the relationship of ovarian hormone levels to breast cell proliferation. However, the prediction had little effect on prescribing habits due to its theoretical nature. Many questions remain regarding menopausal therapy and breast cancer risk, especial
